- In this video, I talk about the Big 4 Era of Gen 1 OU. This was a period where Exeggutor was considered mandatory on competitive teams. However, players often think this era lasted over a decade, when it was actually a very short time.

This video was built off a planned movie script from 2 years ago where I would have gone over all of Exeggutor's history. However, it was quite poor and needlessly bloated. This video compresses much of its contents.

Translation of Exeggutor’s first appearance from Pokemon Battle Historia by Gingingt;
In the program of 64 Mario Stadium, the Gokinjozu team [tln: gokinjo means neighborhood in japanese, but the text writes it in hiragana, ごきんじょー, rather than in kanji, ご近所. Also, the word for neighborhood isn't spelled with a -zu at the end and doesnt have an elongated o sound at the end] used Electrode, while the Assari Shioaji [tln: lit. "lightly salted"] team used Exeggutor for the first time. Electrode was going against Jolteon when suddenly it used Explosion with the fastest speed among all Pokemon. Exeggutor attracted attention as a bulky new Psychic type.

@4:46 Appreciate the effort, but two mistakes I would like to point out:
1) Darryn van Vuuren died on 18th February 2021. August was when Martin Dvorak and myself made the discovery, after his inquest finally began in July.
2) That event was actually Pokémon Championship 2000 and Pokémon 2000 World Championship (both part of the circuit that year). Pokémon 2000 Stadium Tour is a completely separate event that toured across North America.

I can't help but notice on that last usage chart that Tauros had fallen in usage behind Snorlax and Chansey. I know it's not a lot, but what the heck happened?
Unrevealed. RBY usage does not count unrevealed Pokemon. Because Tauros is usually seen late-game, you will see it the least out of the Big 3.

@@PlaguevonKarma Just to say : this is also the reason why Snorlax frequently has officially less than 100% representation in tournament in GSC, it's not because he wasn't used (sometimes it's the case but it's very rare, that's like a guy that decides to bring a Snorlax less team just to flex because he or his team already qualified so he has nothing to lose) but because the game was simply won before Snorlax was shown. It might sound silly considering how the meta is perceived as a slow paced slugfest by people, but with Explosion spam teams or Agility Jolteon into SD Marowak it can definitely happen and have the game be won before Lax is even revealed, and it's surprisingly less rare than one would expect at first (not really the norm, but it tends to happen in almost every decently sized tournament at least once pretty much)
Starmie has risen in usage alot and even matches really well with tauros.
Okay hearing that Victreebel was considered interchangable with Egg is so crazy to hear for me considering all the defensive benefits Egg has. I've never run Victreebel before so I might be interested in giving it a shot now that I have an idea as to how it can excel
I feeling the ultimate result of seeing more of Victreebel in OU will be seeing more of Alakazam and Gengar. Victreebel might be a fun, slightly faster Wrap-trapper, however, it's still a Poison-type with a small movepool. Those are traits that have held Victreebel back in the past that just might come back to haunt it in the present.
RIP Eggy. You may not be number 4 anymore but you're still a mandatory number 1 in my heart 💜

Listening to you go on about the tiering process for this meta is just insane. Like, people would really wake up in 2017 and say yep, time to lab some RBY Snorlax checks.
Man. I wish Exeggutor is good in today’s game like it was back in Gen 1. Modern Egg is pretty much outclassed and outgunned by everything around it, even with Chlorophyll and the cheesy Harvest set. It was stonks back in its hey day and Gen 2. But took a massive downhill since Gen 3 thanks to so many things mauling it with every new Gen increasing the power level.
65 SpDef, no Stat EXP, U Turn is an extremely common move that easily chips it down, Explosion nerf, and ofc, a lot of weaknesses in its name.
Exeggutor was so good in Gen 1 it even had a niche in RBY Ubers checking Mew and Non-Ice Beam Mewtwo
And it’s preevolution Exeggcute had a niche in NU
it was also used as a niche counter to groudon in gen 3, dont forget! it was really good at his job but since then ubers power level has increased so much its not even worth it
Bug type moves being more usable and on pokemon that were actually viable and not Jolteon really hit it hard.
it was still pretty good within the context of its own tiers in gens 4 and 5, but yeah, kinda astounding how it went from a good UU mon to a good *NU* mon over the span of one generation. and then it just fell off the face of the earth hahaha

I have always use Exeggutor or Exeggute in Gen 1 Pokémon stadium in my play-thrus seriously it’s bonkers and hard to take down .
Even does well against Non-Ice Beam Mewtwo and Mew
I used to consider egg the most important mon to have on a team for its offensive versatility and defensive coverage.
"The little three" I like that
Imagine if Parasect was faster. It would easily be among the most broken in RBY. Maybe even more broken than Mewtwo.

Cultured players will pair the big 3 with the small 3 for the ultimate team, the medium 6

Being one of the most Consistent Status Distribution Mons in it's generation as well as being able to Break through Tauros's S-S-B strat because of its bulk and strike back with a STAB Psychic or Explosion is Amazing, as well as not getting Walled by Anything Except Jynx.
Exeggutor is such a weird pokemon design. I still can't decide if it's cool or goofy. I still like it tho

Seriously nothing can replicate what Exeggutor does in RBY ou heck it’s pre evolution Exeggcute even has a niche in the lower tiers and Exeggutor itself does fine in Ubers
I agree but I think I somewhat limit myself by always insisting on the big 3 and eggy on EVERY team. I do that because i love it tho.

Sometimes i wish they buff his speed of the both forms, and isnt like they can't, they buff stats from a lot of mons in the start of gen 6 and 7, but exeggutor wasnt one of them for some reason
I still run Exeggutor. Honestly I like him more than Snorlax. I understand why Snorlax is so good and I use him, but I always run slightly odd sets with him like Amnesia or Counter because I just don't care for what the bog standard Snorlax brings to the table.
Exeggutor is a mon I didn't really end up using much when I decided to try out Gen 1 OU, as I found using Victreebell just more fun (Sure I lose hard to Sing Chansey and Starmie, but hey when Victreebell works it *Works*), I do honestly wonder how Gen 1 could've been if fighting types weren't so laughably terrible. (Like if Submission was just fighting type double edge or even take down vs whatever the actual fuck Submission is with its 80 BP and like what, 80 accuracy?) Machamp was another pokemon I had fun with in Gen 1, but that thing has a plethora of issues that make it unreliable at best lol
I'll be real in gen 1 I feel Bug, Poison and Fighting are the types of "Makes something just objectively worse due to giving it a poor STAB typing", though I do think Bug is overall much more sound than Poison or Fighting in the gen, as Bug's issue was its relatively weak moves so you bascially just didn't have stab, and literally 90% of bug mons got dumpster for BST totals because... bug. Fighting and Poison were "Guess I'll die to Psychic" and actively would hinder a pokemon's typing imo if its dual typed with them, bug is just "I guess I don't get good STAB and I take more from Fire, Rock, Flying and Poison, thankfully Drill Peck is the only good flying move and Poison basically doesn't exist :)"
@@O-01-04 Bugs being crap makes a bit more sense if you consider that competitive battles were a last-minute addition, so competitive balance wasn't really considered.
In terms of in-game balance, though, bugs serve an important role as low-level threats for enemy trainers. Also, their fast exp growth and early evolutions serve as a way to teach the player about evolution. Still, it is a bit of a shame that they fall off so hard and don't really have any uses after the early game.

Fighting types would need huge buffs to work in Gen 1. Like literally there are no fighting types even in UU just in NU
Machamp even has trouble taking something like Slowpoke or Exeggcute down
@@bryanc1772 Yeah fighting types need a LOT to be better in gen 1, actual Special stats would probably be boons to some like Hitmonchan with its elemental punches that do like 2 damage because its miserable special stat, Giving Fighting Type as a whole an *actually good attack* would be nice as well. I do honestly think the 3 types that are the most depressing in gen 1 is Bug, Fighting and Poison, though I consider Bug the third-worst with Poison being flat-out the worst as Poison is an actual detriment to anything that has its typing because "you die to Psychic even more now", same with Fighting.

I have 2 questions: 1. You mentioned winrate, is there a winrate stat in rby? i only know of usage stats based on rankings. 2. Are there team comps that are considered "best" right now as well? Or is the meta too diverse right now?
As far as I know, there isn't a way to just check winrate how you can check the usage of a Pokemon, but if you check the stats of a high-level RBY tournament, such as RBYPL, you can see the winrates of the Pokemon used by the best players.

I would consider Exeggutor mandatory almost i mean even now it’s still the next best Pokémon next to Starmie and Alakazam
Like seriously nothing replicates this thing
- it has great resistances Psychic, Fighting , Ground, Electric, Grass, Water
- checks Rhydon, Mewtwo, chansey it can check anything it wants to. Nothing switches into Psychic , Explosion and Mega Drain easily without taking a ton from one of those moves
- spams psychic, can put something to sleep or paralyzed or even blow up all in one slot

It's still better than Alakazam, even though the usage doesn't show it.
I would argue it's even still better than Starmie on serious tournament team.

Victreebel was used in wrap teams, sometimes over Cloyster. I never thought it would pour over to regular teams. Wrap was such a busted mechanic in RBY.
Still, Exeggutor is an all time favorite.
Exeggutor is still the fourth best Pokémon in Gen 1 OU, and it’s still as annoying as ever.
Exeggutor dropping from usage is overrated.

I still don’t get why Snorlax was considered more mandatory than Exeggutor. Snorlax’s special was honestly bad enough to scoff at, and he doesn’t bring anything too big that Tauros doesn’t do better. I’d my boy Eggy before a Snorlax any day to a Gen 1 OU tourney
Yeah, no, you are...really underrating Snorlax.
Snorlax doesn't revenge kill like Tauros. It just trades hits incredibly well while taking paralysis nicely. Its Special looks bad until you notice how much it actually takes in a fight, aka not much at all. It really isn't that much less broken than GSC.
