- Would a more accurate description for the English Civil War be 'a war of three kingdoms'? In this video Professor Justin Champion explores the Scottish and Irish dimensions to the English Civil War.
Whilst the conflicts in England, Ireland and Scotland were separate, the causes and key figures involved were highly interlinked so I would endorse the view that the English Civil Wars were part of the larger 'Wars of the Three Kingdoms' - a few argued by Trevor Royle in his book of that title.
Kilsyth and Alford were just as bloody as Naseby and Worcester
Neither side is innocent.
"A slaughter of Protestants"
Actually the first slaughter of 1641 of note was after the failed assult on Lisnagarvey. After which the Protestant Settlers killed several hundred captured "rebels".
Then the rebels carried out their own massacre of about 100 settlers at Portadown. Around 4000 settlers were killed in 1640s.
Compare that to the native Irish death toll of the English Civil War in Ireland.
