I would refine your statement by adding that in thicker plaster and lath walls you should tie a piece of thread (very light string or fishing line will also work) put a mark at the bottom of the magnet to mark the center of the magnet and then slide the magnet across the wall while holding the thread. Even though very thick plaster will not allow a magnet to hold to the nail head it will still peterb the magnet causing it not to hang vertically under the thread. By locating points at which the the magnet holds to the wall while the thread swings out of vertical you can locate the nail heads. The reason I say this is that my home was built in the 1850's and in some places the plaster is up to 1 1/4" thick and even a N52 magnet will not "stick" with that much plaster between the lath and the magnet.

What happens when there's nothing behind where the magnet sticks??? That sounds crazy I know - but I drilled above and below the spot after making a vertical line where the magnet stuck and nothing. House was built in 1912 - any chance they ran studs horizontal or something? I've already got 8 drill holes in the wall and I'm running out of things to try. 🤔😒

It there typically any metal on the corners on plaster walls? My house is 60years old this year. I tried starting at a corner and measuring out 16 inches to have a rough idea where to try my magnet. It stuck to the corner when I accidently bumped the corner. It shocked me. It felt like that (outside) corner had a flashing like material along the corner. I wondered if it needed something like that to keep those corners sharp while adding the plaster. I mostly wanna know out of curiosity. I'm female, and nearly as old as my house, I don't do major things beyond changing out a thermostat or the garbage disposal is as challenging as I get! I'll paint it, cover it with paper/vinyl or upholstery, but when it comes to building structures, I'll leave that to the pros! Hehe, but I am in the process of remodeling my kitchen alone! I'm just adding lattice pieces to the faces of my cabinets to make them look like shaker style instead of those boring plain birch cabinets! I didnt even miter the boards. I filled them with plastic wood, sanded and painted. I pulled the sink up and I'm painting my prefabs to look like stone, and I'm installing a new floating wood (engineered) floors. All that is simple if you've got an ounce of common sense and gumption! Ive got a M.S. in mathematics, so I've got some common sense! Some days I'm running low on gumption though!
