There's a video on UA-cam called, "World's Great Drummers Salute Ringo Starr." It's about three minutes. Well worth a watch.
I recently watched Gregg Bissonette on Drumeo and he had a great chat and demonstration of why Ringo was such a good drummer.
It's always about points of reference to the times we have lived..
Ringo represents the generation of drummers that influenced the drummers that influenced the drummers that are influencing the drummers today..
My first kit was a Roger's in blue metallic! No shit. 1970, I'll NEVER forget that drum kit. I was 9 years old.😢
Nice. Love playing Rogers
Ringo is the embodiment of "play to the song". Superb drummer, period.
Ringo Starr and Doug “Cosmo”Clifford are the reason I’m a drummer. Yes, I eventually became more interested in complex drummers like Bill Bruford, Neil Peart, Billy Cobham, but I still love those two original groove masters.
Am constantly going into bat for Ringo, Lars, and Phil Rudd.
Respect.
Pet peeve when people mock famous (or unfamous) drummers.
Highlights their own insecurities
I love Ringo and Charlie Watts. The difference between these famous basic drummers and many amateurs drummers that have more ability is they know there limitations, they don’t try to be anything there not, and they only play what the song requires. And they come up with occassionally simple but iconic drum fills or grooves that once heard, you know what song it is.
It's possible people who critique have already considered influence/legacy and simply don't like them or their style.
You know what they say about opinions.
Or theyre critiquing solely on the basis of pure drumming and technique, setting aside influence or any nostalgia bias, which is totally fine too.
Ringo was a huge influence on me as well. He was a brilliant player who understood how to play to the song. Anyone who criticizes his playing probably doesn’t get it.
I've never understood the hate.
He's legit awesome on drums
100%. Sadly, some people thrive on negativity. @@AndrewRooneyDrums
I never dis anyone who can hold down a back beat.
Preach! One of the arguments I'm so tired of is Portnoy vs Mangini. It's like they're both amazing and different drummers completely so...just stop.
What do guitar player know anyway?
A sport lol,
Dave Grohl can't read music, he learned a couple grooves from jazz and just hit harder to make them sound rocky, then taught himself guitar based on how percussive he can make it sound. He's not technical by any means but he is a little bit of a genius.
Ringo wasn't a good drummer, he was a GREAT musician!
Just....stop! 😂
NEVERRRRR!
Watching Keith Moon stand up and start kicking his drum set to pieces at the end of their set didn't do it for me. Any person struggling to acquire their own gear seeing that destruction - same as many guitar players of that time - have to shake their heads. Luckily that type of 'entertainment' died out as the 70's raced into the 80's. Not sure what kind of influence or legacy that provided - but their recordings survived better than their equipment.
Remember that a lot of Beatles records feature musicians other than those four talentless Scouse twats. As George Martin's compositions and arrangements got more ambitious and exceeded the Fab Four's *limited* musical capabilities, he increasingly hired in session musicians, including Jimmy Page and John Baldwin (alias John-Paul Jones) who went on to form half of Led Zeppelin. Bernard Purdie did a fair bit of session drumming for GM too, and he says none of the Beatles records are Ringo's playing. Quincy Jones found Ringo insufferably narcissistic and incapable of playing even basic parts, hired a session drummer to play the parts - and come playback time, Ringo didn't even notice he'd been replaced.
You’re fuckin clueless.
