  • The second episode in saving the Kubota Mini Excavator from the scrap pile!
    Things got pretty interesting in this one. Hope you Enjoy!
    We explain some techniques to free off seized piston rings and put them to the test. We also perform an in situ test to confirm glowplug serviceability.
    Things are looking up for the Old Girl!

      Cheers Rob, think the lever for the throttle had been left in the fully open position by somebody else who tried starting it years ago! The dangers of starting a machine which has been left for years, looked like it was working but the internals must be stuck, more investigation work needed, stay tuned thanks for your continued support👍

    Didn't seem smokey enough for running away on the oil imo.

    At some point it's obvious you'ld check the radiator for water if you're going to run it.

    I use a piece of wood over the intake to stop run away issues. Also pull out the engine to work on it to make it easier . We had a stuck engine on the Cat 951 that not been run for 15 years. We ended up doing a rebuild in the end. We found that a pump barrel segment was stuck stopping the rack from moving. Waiting for better weather to refit pump segments .

    Thanks for the videos on the KH41. I have the identical machine that has a ROPS vs a cab. My machine is in use on a regular basis. I purchased it used in 2006 with 2600 hours on the clock and it now has.just about 4700 hours. It appears your engine is worth saving even for another application. There is so much rust and determination on the machine it may be beyond restoration. I live in Nova Scotia , Canada and cold starts have never been an issue but cold starts need glow plugs year round. I can still get parts from Kubota including final drive. New tracks easy to get so I’ll keep the machine as long as it goes to work, it will probably outlive me and I am 83.

      Thanks Des! We are giving it every chance to be saved, we have revisited it and more videos to come so stay tuned👍 this weekend we were repairing the hydraulic tank off it, we’ll post a video of it so you can see the work that went into it
      I bet the Nova Scotia climate tests the battery and glow plugs to the limit? Take care👍

      @@RustNRestoration A good battery has never failed a strat even in the coldest days but with glow plugs - a great engine IMHO. I have a Kubota RTV 900 with a slightly larger 3 cylinder engine that also also gives excellent service but it is younger in hours. I have 2 Yanmars in my John Deere tractors and they also give reliable cold weather service but are the youngest engines I have. Given good fuel, a charged battery and air and good mechanical condition, it should/will start. You made a good call on the rings and the runaway was exciting. I look forward to your future videos.

    Just stick a blowlamp in the intake for a good pre-heat
    Would agree that a check of the injector pump is the next course of action..
    I think running at that speed would have definitely freed up the rings!

      There was a fair bit of stuff blown out when it raced away so hopefully it’s released the piston rings of they were stuck, keep tuned for an update👍

    Think you might be right about the stuck rack. When running away on oil the smoke is usually much more grey, where as here it is quite dark.

      Exactly what I thought when I watched the footage back. Didn't notice at the time but definately going to check the pump out next.

    I've worked around many of those small Koboata diesels and they are super tough. Going full rack and running at valve float RPM's for hours on end doesn't even bother them.
    I've seen many do it due to the rack linkage or springs in the governor breaking and surviving being run like that for days just fine.

    • @RustNRestoration
      @RustNRestoration  6 місяців тому +1

      Thanks tcmtech, that’s good to know and we were wondering if it may have caused any damage, we will revisit it and try to investigate and free the rack off if it’s stuck👍

  • @johnhicks735
    @johnhicks735 6 місяців тому +1

    You can mix it in with your transmission fluid and acetone mixture to. It's known for freeing up stuck Piston oil rings and other types of things like that to. For instance let's say such as oil pumps and fuel pumps and stuck fuel injectors and fuel racks.

    • @RustNRestoration
      @RustNRestoration  6 місяців тому

      Thanks! I saw a test online and it gave the best results and most success on releasing rusty bolts etc👍

    The first thing you do on a diesel engine that turns but hasn't been started for awhile is open the oil pan plug to check for water in the crankcase. Then you check and free up the injector rack to prevent a runaway engine if it does start. 3rd you pull the valve cover, push down hard with your hand on each valve spring to see if the valves are moving. If one is stuck, spray some lubricant and hit it with a hammer until it recoils. Then work it until it's free. Next check the fuel filter, clean any gunk from it with diesel or a cleaner, fill it up before installing it. Drain the fuel tank or set up a temporary tank then flush the lines, and bleed the air to the filter. Pull the oil filter and rinse that out. Check air filter. Check all the electrical connections, wires to the starter, alternator and ignition. Hook up the battery, turn it over and bleed the injector lines until there are no more bubbles. Most people stop bleeding them as soon as they see fuel come out and tighten them back up leaving them still full of air. If it does not start right up, pull the injectors and check them for a good spray. Clean them and an engine will run if it has compression. that can be checked when the injectors are out.
    I enjoy watching these startup videos but the guys who don't follow a proper troubleshooting procedure waste video time cranking an engine over and over without any result and washing the cylinders with starting fluid.
    Be an efficient mechanic, don't bore and irritate your audience with a bunch of chatter. Mechanicing is very rewarding when done properly.
    If an engine is frozen with rust, tear it apart. Impatience is not in the vocabulary of a proper mechanic.

    check the fuel pump it might be the rack or a stuck linkage

  • @tomscum61

    You put 20ml of engine oil in each cylinder and then were surprised when it ran away.
    A diesel will run for about as long as it did on 60ml especially when mixed with the diesel. I wonder how much oil and diesel was sat in the dish on the piston?

    • @RustNRestoration
      @RustNRestoration  6 місяців тому

      We knew it was a possibility. After looking at the footage I'm pretty sure it wasn't running on oil, certainly not towards the end. Had I realised at the time how black the smoke was I would have cracked the injector lines off which would have given us the definitive answer. There wouldn't have been much diesel in there, we spun it over with the injectors out to clear the bores and the lines were cracked off up until the point it started to pick up on ether

    Defo spicy that startup, isn't the kubota engine a relative of the Yanmar 3 te series? if you're gonna look at the pump (on Yanmars i've always found it's the governor that gets stuck) it looks like it's cab off time, would be good if we could see how big and what shape the hydraulic tank is (would give more access to the engine as well) as we might have a hydraulic tank knocking about that might be suitable if you want one.

    • @RustNRestoration
      @RustNRestoration  6 місяців тому

      Thanks Steve! Yes the hydraulic tank is ready to come off and we were in the process of removing it but the bolts are in such bad shape we had to abandon removal to be revisited, have you got a tank off a Kubota that may be suitable? We were going to repair this one but may save time if one is available👍

      @@RustNRestoration Hiya, no we haven't got a Kubota tank but we've got various rectangular tanks off various machines we've dismantled and a mate who has a scrap metal business (when he clears places anything he thinks is salvageable he offers it to us) might have something suitable if we know what it looks like and approximate size, hope that helps.

    • @RustNRestoration
      @RustNRestoration  6 місяців тому

      Thanks Steve, it’s a unique shaped tank and think it will have to be like for like if we replace it, we’ll assess the possibility of repair or replace when we get it off, thanks for the offer and it may be an option if we can’t get one👍
