I was maybe 10 when I saw this episode. I didn't understand how John was different. But I noted how patient, decent, witty and fun he was. This episode- and Kids in the Hall - was my first education about gay people, and how there was nothing threatening about them.
Ok but I love how John never got visibly upset or defensive about Homers homophobia. He just kept with the jokes, remained a nice guy and sill saved him after everything. So many gay people are portrayed as dramatic and 'over-the-top', so I'm glad Johns character was so uniquely normal (with a little bit of flare)

I actually don't think it's obvious at all, which is what makes it great. It's a very subtle joke, the kind you don't really see in the Simpsons anymore.
It's supposed to portray how oblivious the characters are to the outside world and poke fun at their outdated thinking. The way Moe says it so matter-of-factly is what makes it funny.
