    That was very intelligent of Zach to say that this film came in Clinton era, when the economy was booming. People don't realise how profoundly the political and economic circumstances affect media and art in general. Like, post COVID, a lot of dark media has started coming up, be it books, movie or TV shows.

    My father-in-law is buried in a famous local cemetery, everybody goes there to go for walks. We get lunch and go sit at his grave and eat with him, we get crazy looks for it! The only thing I don't like about people being in cemeteries, please give space and respect to the people who are there grieving when you're just there for a fun visit! The walkers are super rude and invasive 9 out of 10 times. Cemeteries are beautiful spaces that should be enjoyed, but just try and remember some people are there sobbing their eyes out for someone who they'll never see again. ***NOT SPEAKING ABOUT HOLLYWOOD FOREVER, JUST ABOUT YOUR LOCAL CEMETERIES WHO AREN'T HOSTING AN EVENT***

      When visiting LA once, I didn’t have a car so I walked through a cemetery to get to the museum on the grounds (turns out it was too far of a walk for my schedule) and all my friends thought I was weird to go to a museum in a cemetery and just stroll thru the hills. I go with my family every year to pay respects to ancestors and there will be people just walking around, even someone making a MV. It’s a semi public place, respect everyone using it!

    I think I’m gonna need to rewatch Forrest Gump, but also need Zach to rewatch it and elaborate on his thoughts about it. It’s been a while that I’ve seen it, but I don’t think the movie brushes over the “dark” aspects of history the way he’s implying it does. Yes Forrest seemingly glides through life, but the characters around him suffer true hardships and I think the movie does a good job of portraying that

    When I was 15 I went to NY for spring break, and stayed with my adult friends who were attending/teaching at NYU. Billy Crudup and Parker Posey were dating and living in the apartment building next to my friends, they would go out and have smoke breaks on the curb and our smoke breaks would coincide. I just enjoyed the shared moments on the curb and didn't ask for a picture autograph, but I should have. 😂

    As a 34 year old, I'm SHOCKED by the number of throwback movies I watch now from the 90's and 2000's where I thought the actors & characters were in their 30's+, only to realize now that they were crazy young! Even just last night, I was watching Casino Royale for the first time in a decade and I remember Vesper as being a WHOMAN, this sexy, thriving, hyper-intelligent business person who was 35 years old, at minimum. The actress looked like an absolute BABY to me now and I found out she was only 24 when she filmed that movie.

    this is very random but the earnest nostalgia ick thing reminds me of a specific sad feeling i get and i want to know if anyone else knows what i'm talking about. It's when seeing certain cute things, like drawings done by a small child, that seem so earnestly precious like that kid didn't know what the world held yet, and it makes you kinda depressed for them? and there's like a somewhat irrational fear they'll be bullied or made fun of like others won't see the beauty in the drawing that you see, they'll just see something to ridicule. bonus if it's from a while ago and the kid is grown up now.

    I think Penny was actually supposed to be about 19 years old, which is how old Kate Hudson was when making the movie. The whole "how old are we really?" scene was a joke. Her age is never stated to keep it ambiguous, but I don't think she's meant to be underage, even though many of the groupies of the time were.

  • @EvWuzhere
    @EvWuzhere Місяць тому +2

    I dont think forrest gump was an apt example of what zach was saying about older films' outlooks on life/america, bc the point of that film specifically was kinda about forrest's perspective giving him a sort of immunity from fully being swallowed up by the suffering around him, that hes an outlier who- does have highs and lows and experiences all this american history firsthand- but ultimately he is imbued with a sense of cosmic luck, and a sense of always being more present as opposed to cerebral about his life like the people around him who are more brought down by their troubles (lieutenant dan, jenny, etc)- it seems like the suffering his character endures doesnt stick with him, but all the love he has experienced in his life does. Honestly even though i love this film i do think tom hanks does not do a great job playing special needs at all and im surprised people dont point that out as much as they do something like jerry mcguire, but regardless its deservedly a classic

    • @EvWuzhere
      @EvWuzhere Місяць тому +1

      That being said i do agree w the general point being made about the american outlook in like early 2000s films being so different. I think about it often w how much pro college propaganda w films their used to be in movies i love like american pie. Though I do think schitts creek's idyllicism completely holds up- it didnt age badly at all idk what yall were on about there

    • @EvWuzhere
      @EvWuzhere Місяць тому

      Also realized the film i meant to reference wasnt jerry maguire and i cant remember what it was but now it looks like i though tom cruise was playing a special needs person in that movie lol

    • @EvWuzhere
      @EvWuzhere Місяць тому

      Also also- i think the whole unspoken theme of forrest gump is kind of about what zach's saying- that this man stumbles through life in an epic way and is ok in the end. I think the contrast between him and the other characters is implying something about the purity of his spirit- that pain may be an inherent part of life but suffering is not necessarily- he experiences pain but doesnt really suffer like the people around him. it takes everyone seeing the differences between themselves and forrest to gauge that, even though no one in the film but the viewer fully learns that lesson

    This sounds like a great movie that I hadn't heard of before, so I'll put it on my list of things to watch.
    I actually prefer rock music, but like, I live in Japan and like a funny interesting thing about Japan is that it's probably like the only place in the world where rock still perseveres. It's not as crazy as like how things got in the States partly because the government is quite strict about some of the illicit things, so bands are generally probably a lot more PG than in most parts of the world. Not that seedy things never happen, but there's more people who are law abiding and trying to avoid a scandal than there are people who are getting into things. In comparison, more scandals probably came out of pop idol groups who had super controlling contracts they were locked into from a young age, so they were more likely to try to push toward scandalous things to try to get some freedom in their lives. But that sad, the huge headlines and bad press and being dropped from all of your labels and contracts and your stuff being pulled off of shelves in light of a scandal that gets leaked to the public and ends up in country-wide shaming is probably a huge incentive for a lot of people to probably keep their nose clean. The content of the songs can get dark and explore more of the darkness of the human condition in an artistic way though and that's totally okay because you're just talking about stuff and expressing and not actually doing it.
    But also, dance music gets to Japan too the same as everywhere else, but like...there's almost no dance clubs here except for in the large main cities because up until recently dancing at nightclubs was banned. Live music was totally okay, but like concerts would end by like 8 or something so people would be able to get their last train to go home. Probably because of that EDM and stuff hasn't really taken as big of a hold here as in other places where night life is more of a thing. The situational cocktail here just kind of fits better for people to enjoy watching bands and other entertainers perform on stage, so that's how things are and so a lot of concert venues of all sizes still exist here and there's a huge music scene with a lot of bands of varying music genres including a lot of rock bands, and I kind of love it. Like I do listen to some other music genres, but I'm sure you can attest to the fact that sometimes some emotions can only be expressed through a certain kind of song and having the musical variation of being able to have a rock song when your mood feels like it needs a rock song is just nice.
    But like, further, Japan is like the only place where Tower Records still exists. The rest of the company around the world dropped dead in this era of digital music, but Japan still makes having physical copies and physical merch viable that somehow DVD and CD stores still exist here and people go to them. Tower has its own digital music things and has expanded into other verticals slightly outside of just music, but are music adjacent or like at least marketing promotion adjacent. It's kind of interesting to just observe and see how they manage to still just work.
