Not trying to be a curmudgeon, but I think the first 200HP outboard was the 1976 OMC (Johnson/Evinrude) I could be wrong. Either way have a great day and have fun boating!
Outboard- Rob ...And before all the burdensome EPA regulations you have today. Never beyond my wildest dreams did I think they would get their greasy mitts on the boating industry, but they surely did in a very costly and negative way to consumers! Now, you need to take out a second mortgage just to buy an entry-level outboard motor!
for me the 50HP 4 cylinder mercury i had in the early 70s was the best outboard i ever used then again i only had 3 outboards a 55 Chrysler very unreliable (2 cylinder) a 25 Hp Volvo Penta good but underpowered then went to inboards with Jet drives but i had the most fun on my Mercury this brings memories back for me thanks for posting of course Mercury outboards will always have a soft spot in my heart
I work for Westerly Marina, a Mercury dealership on the Hudson River in Ossining, NY. The family has had the marina and store since 1959 and we still have a bunch of abandoned outboards that were left for repairs or storage over the years. Just what's sitting around (without digging), I know I have three "dock-busters", a 65, a 110, and a handful of the later 70s and early 80s Marathon engines that just used the horsepower rating on the cowl. (There are more, I just can't remember the models of them off hand.) Plus, we actually still see at least one or two of these vintage motors come in every year when someone finds one at a tag sale or in a relative's garage, so I still fix and re-activate these old smokers to this day. We have a whole separate parts room full of NOS/NLA parts for Mercury and MerCruiser consisting of parts that have been here on location since they were current stock. I have entire NOS outdrive cases from the early 70s, in the box. Un-obtanium early electronic ignition parts. Pistons and needle bearings. It's like the weirdest museum you can imagine... This was really cool to come across. I've only been there for about the last 18 years, but I'm the one guy there who has an eye for all the old stuff. If anyone is looking for very specific old stuff and can find Sing Sing Prison, you can find us. I'd love to see it used to fix a LARGER old thing.
The last segment at 15 min & 30 sec is Leif Ericson…AKA Big John Cannon, cattle rancher in the Sonora region in Arizona on the NBC show “The High Chaparral”.
These vintage days were the best. I'd go back to dial phone and wish iPhones never existed. Life was much simpler then. Things were more affordable. No stress. Not like today.
Bought a 50 hp 1971 brand new on a 14 ft glastron 142 skiflite it ran excellent . Repowered with a 70 hp in 1978 buried the speedo at 55 both ran excellent . Switched to mercruser since had two stingrays since , will never forged my glastron with the 50hp . Wish I could find another.
I am not bullshitng , with my 50hp.it went 38 mph on the speedo .when repowered with the 70 made a world of difference back in the seventies speedos are not gps I ran new car dealerships some cars being identical would blow the doors off one another, that is just how in is
I guess they knew what they were talking about... 1972 50HP Mercury with Thunderbolt Ignition still going strong with not one issue all these 49 years. What other product can you say that about? Not many.
We have a 76 merc 850 4 cylinder been in the family for 3 going on 4 generations runs like new still to this day on a v5 statecraft supersport light load will do 40 to 45 mph just as fast as ranger r72 I owned with a johnson 115
These so called lower HP engines moved boats along just fine back then before the ridiculous horsepower wars started. The sweet spot for small boat HP is around 85 to 100 HP. A 200 HP outboard doesn't make a boat go 2X faster than a 100 HP (probably 25% faster if you're lucky) and it wastes huge amounts of fuel. Less was more in the 1960s even though gas was dirt cheap adjusted for inflation. People were a little bit smarter about how they wasted their money years ago. LOL. Now they are just flat out stupid about how they waste money.
In addition to the above a 200 hp on the same size boat as a 100 will push it much more than 25%. TBM tested a 100 then a 175 on the same boat and the 100 would barely plane it and managed around 26 mph whereas the 175 had much stronger (obviously) time to plane, mid range and topped out at about 46 mph. A 200 would have probably hit 50. This is nearly 2x the 100 top speed. I like the fact that the market offers a wider range of power choices today than that of the 60s. Of course when Merc hit 150 hp in '73 ppl were saying "this is way too much power."
have 1963 85hp merc does anyone have any ideas why motor will not swivel left to right disconnected steering that not the prob seems motor has locked in one position any ideas cheers
pepe Siciliano I have bought a 115 HP motor that has the relays hanging on the wires on the front of the motor. Where can I find a photo of it to see exactly how they are mounted.
Love the Bikinis at about 10:30, much nicer than the ugly swimsuits of the 80s I'm glad smoking in Elevators, in all public places(at least where I live), is banned. It must have been brutal putting up with Tobacco Stench
If the 70s Weren't bad enough as a generation of people who were evidently blind! Bell bottoms were disgusting and WTF is up with the color's and prints of their clothes back then??? SMFH thank God I came along as this horrible decade was coming to a close 😅!!! Otherwise I would have to go burning every single picture of my youth! Yeah I'm serious and yes it really was that bad looking! Not to begin to mention the hair styling and lack of cutting it! Along with the facial hair which was attached to the chest hair and the leisure suits 🤔 and those stupid looking oversized button up shirt collars! Holy WTF??? So I'm gonna go out on a limb here??? I have to guess that mirrors being glued onto the ceilings over beds are the best reason for all the horrific dressings and lacking of hair maintenance??? SMFH! Ugh! I understand......"this was all about being rebellious to the man!" NOPE! It's really just called the decade of looking and acting like crap...... because it's easier to be a slob than look presentable in public! Now this hopeless new generation X or whatever it is? Is fine just going out in public wearing their bed clothes and slippers! And not taking a shower if their lucky once a week because their too tied to their phones and video games or social media. God, if anyone actually knew how most these retards looked on FB or Twatter, they'd be lucky to know the other person on the opposite side of their screens probably not even dressed at all!!! Sick world we have anymore 😪 and getting worse by the minute it looks....... but otherwise the 50s through the early 60s in the video was pretty cool to see how people lived back then. 🙄
This was truly the "golden age" of boating! Actually, it was the golden age for having fun and enjoying life, PERIOD!!!
These old commercials are the best. I love a mercury and I would love to get my hands on an old one. Great stuff and thanks for posting
A nice trip down through memory lane. My dad had a Mercury. Always ran well.
Got a 72 1150 runs like a dream over 40 years later!!
Seymour Merc I got an early 70s 4.5 hp :)
I've got a 72 1400 sitting on a rack in the garage, I'm just waiting for the right boat to put her on!
Looks like me heading to the lake at 3:50. A big Mercury and a cigar!
He's pretty bold, towing that rig with a car that has drum brakes!
I have a 1969 merc 200 runs like a dream, never had major problems except the water pump, never left me stranded.
Had a 69 1000, loved that engine.
Not trying to be a curmudgeon, but I think the first 200HP outboard was the 1976 OMC (Johnson/Evinrude) I could be wrong. Either way have a great day and have fun boating!
@@RHJ3 Mercury added an extra digit to their hp back then ie a 1969 merc 1250 is 125hp.
@@RHJ3< He was referring to a 1969 20hp Mercury that was called a 200 just like the 40 was called a 400.

My Uncle has one of those I bet it has 4000hrs on it!
Same, but from the 80’s. Best motor.
Love the testing they do on sand bars.
Merc recommends them for land as well I see.
Mercury marine, number one on the water

These commercials are hilarious 😂
Well if I had money,
I'd tell you what I'd do,
I go downtown buy a Mercury or two.
Crazy bout a Mercury .
These vintage days were the best. I'd go back to dial phone and wish iPhones never existed. Life was much simpler then. Things were more affordable. No stress. Not like today.
I was so much happier living the simpler lifestyle! I utterly despise the era I'm living in now!
if I only had a time machine.
wow love my merc 9.9 it,s a 2003 and runs like a champ..........
Rip Taylor doing outboard motor commercials. Looks like the casting agent had the day off. 😁
Why doesn’t Mercury do ads like this anymore. They’d make so much more money
TOWER OF POWER!!!!!!!!!
Awesome, Thanks for uploading this video
Placid, Florida in the house
Grandma looking good.
I never knew 9:54 that Rip Taylor did a mercury motor commercial in 1971 before.
Gotta get me some of that Sweet Breath.
Nice!
Such a shame they are not good anymore
*HES GOT THE MERC* **YOU** *WANT!*
All natural chicks, no thongs or bolt ons or tattoos
Mercs were way ahead of their time.

Bert Demeule 55 mph is a bit optimistic for a 142 skiflite with a 70 and actually 45 would be optimistic.
I just ran a 142 skiflite 14ft with a merc 65hp, a little choppy but made it upto 35 mph max

A 200 hp engine can push a larger boat much faster than a 100. Larger engines work less at the same speed as smaller engines.

5:33 25 years of not giving a fuck about the lower unit or the boat for that matter lolol.
cool i have a 55 mk25

What TF was 'powerdome combustion?' You mean the same dome-pistoned, cross-fire design used on every other 2-stroke outboard since...forever?
Exactly
How does a person determine the model of a motor when the serial number is not readable?
Wes Botha if you know your mercs you can go by color
pepe Siciliano I have bought a 115 HP motor that has the relays hanging on the wires on the front of the motor. Where can I find a photo of it to see exactly how they are mounted.
Wes Botha what colour is the engine
pepe Siciliano The enjine is black and the cover is black with a blue stripe it also has Quicksilver written on it. I think it is a 1989 model.
Wes Botha so when you say really are we talking about yours tilt trim relay
Merc rudes johnson are like ford Chevy but I've always had better luck with mercs never had a yammer hammer but heard good things
