you just confirmed what i was thinking? thank you. good tip. i did exactly what you did took the carb offand cleanned it 3 times before i said i was gonna pull those dumb ( epa ) regulated jetsd. thanks again
very good! Another gremlin that can cause this is the choke valve sticking. I ran a very hot motor on a very hot day and unfortunately a sudden very cold rain shower happened. This actually warped the carburetor just ever so slightly. And the choke valve pin that captures the choke valve would not rotate smoothly. I never thought to manually move the choke valve and see if it was making full travel! After many parts, I finally took the carb apart again and notice the choke valve "hung up" into a high idle position. Rather than buy a new carb, I removed the choke valve from the choke valve pin and "polished" the pin with 400 grit metal sanding paper. Both sides where it rotates within the carb body. Just a little at a time, until it rotated freely. Then installed it, lubed it with some lithium dry spray inside the carb seats for the pin and it worked fine. Another problem also ...same issue...a surging that manifested days later was intake manifold gaskets. One of them failed and caused a very small air leak that would produce a surging motor rpm at idle but not noticeable at high rpm ranges. I replaced both of the two intake gaskets and doped both sides with indian gasket sealant and let that dry for 24 hours. Problem solved.
I have a 19hp Kawasaki that sounded like it was intermittently losing spark. Put a spark tester on it and sure enough the one side was losing spark. Changed the coil on that side and replaced spark plugs on both sides. It ran great for about a week then started doing the same thing. It still does it intermittently. It might be fine for a couple mows then I'll go to start it up a few days later and it does it immediately. Shut it off and start it the next morning and it will be fine. What am I missing??
Hey, Thanks. That will be something else I can most likely foul up when checking this. Mine has just started and it is driving me nuts. As I've gotten older my mechanic's skills are failing me, so much so that the State Licensing Board of Shade Tree Mechanics has pull most of my tools. I have a pair of worn out pliers and a rounded off phillips screw driver. You wouldn't be considering a road trip anytime soon would you?
Do you notice any vibrations with that engine ? ( blades off) I have a nearly brand new 23hp Kawi that vibrates so bad it makes my hands go numb at times. I’ve literally done everything from remove the clutch entirely, remove pump belt, pump pulley off crankcase & no differences. There doesn’t seem to be any play in the flywheel with covers off. It seems to have always down this after replacing the engine, which was brand new. The old engine ( same 23hp 680v) had very minimal vibration issues, aside from having a bad cylinder ..
I have a snapper with a 19hp Kawasaki and recently having issues with it. One day runs perfect wouldnt miss a beat then today ran it for 20 min then out of no where it starts to die and I throw handles out and kick in choke and it would pick back up. This last time I had choke all the way on to run and make it back to garage. Hoping maybe same problem with carb or do you have any other suggestions?? Having issue off and on for a few weeks.
I wish my rusty on muffler on my toro pro sat as low as that gravely. Sits right behind the carb so I can’t remove it without removing the muffler. FML
One drawback is when I stop to pick up sticks for longer than 15 seconds. The muffler is hot and low and can kill grass if there is no wind to carry heat away. I always pay attention to where I stop and make it quick if on good grass.
I'm having an issue with mine, but it only starts acting up when it is hot. It runs fine for about 30 minutes and then acts like it is running out of gas and then dies. it will restart and if you leave blades off it will surge and hit the governor and then back off and then surge and hit governor again. any thoughts?
It’s the carburetor . There’s little caps that blow off if the engine backfires . I forget what they are called . The lawn mower mechanic said it’s very common and causes loping and other issues .
Yes I know its a carb issue, thats the whole point of this conversation . This motor has a two barrel carb. One for each cylinder. One idle jet on one side was plugged. It was loping at idle on ONE idle jet. I fixed it. end of story. Not sure what caps you speak of that pop off?
Between the video and this comment I think I have figured out the issue we are having with our Hustler. It appears one of the plugs referred to is missing and a bunch of crap was plugging the holes. Hope to get the part tomorrow and I should be back in business. Thanks guys!
The video sound is pretty good, beyond my imagination
Thanks for showing me how to start a ride on .
your welcome chow

thanks man I just had the same problem with my tiger cat appreciate the help!
Nice! I had the same problem with my 23 hp Scag V-ride. Thanks man. Thumbs up
+Daniel Rodriguez The previous owner gave up on it. It took me several tries to figure it out. Now its like new.
snapshot12002 Do you repair mowers for a living? or is it something you do on your spare time?
+Daniel Rodriguez Just my spare time.
Would liked to have seen what you were speaking of?

You have a bad kill switch relay or connection, I had the same issue and it took me a year to figure it out
can u show a video on what exactly you did? like showing where are the idle jets etc..
Any parts diagram online will show you the two idle jets. Mine is back in service so It will not be torn down again any time soon.

Tighten the bolts that mount the engine to the mower frame

Running shitty ethanol fuel in these engines is so bad, use high octain ethanol free fuel and a good stabilizer

snapshot12002 there called Welch plugs . When they blow out the hole where the plug was can suck in dirt that can clog up the jets in the carb
I suppose that could happen. Never seen one missing before.
