I love her as a writer. Wish she'd written a detective novel. Something hardboiled and penetrative about her style and insight into how people are.

Well ... IMHO, she totally nailed it. And while it's obvious people were attracted to Michael's wealth, to one degree or another (spectating to scamming), I do think ultimately, more were attracted to the 'shine,' she spoke about. Michael, having early on recognized in himself, the specialness of his own gift, went to unparalleled lengths to hone and perfect it. I think he did that in part, or initially, to ensure he could exceed his father's grasp when the time was right for him to do so, but then I think it became about seeing just how good he could get. He was Jonathan Livingston Seagull personified, soaring higher, and higher, and faster, and faster. I've never thought of Michael Jackson as 'ruthlessly' ambitious; rather I always think of him as being 'rabidly' ambitious -- like a dog digging for a bone. He would not give up, he would not quit, till he realized his ever-grander visions. IMHO, people are attracted to that level of SHINE because most of us never achieve anything close to it, and they just want to know what it feels like to be in the presence of someone who has achieved their wildest dreams, which are often primal ideas which have their genesis in childhood. Looking at him from a Freudian perspective (even tho I'm more team Jung), Michael, unlike most of us, does not seem to have sublimated his 'id,' as most of us are conditioned to do as we grow into adulthood. Rather, he clung to and nurtured those id impulses, trying his best to use the 'rational' thinking aspects of ego and superego to try to achieve his dreams. I, too, believe his preference in spending time with children was, as Carrie said: Young children don't understand celebrity. I don't think children -- who if reasonably well nurtured and loved -- would have seen much of a difference between their 'shine' and Michael's own. He was an adult who had held on to the precious gift of being able to be their equal. I disagree with the idea that Michael was asexual. I think it was just sooooo hard for him to form relationships with women he could trust, and who could both 'get' him, cope with his level of fame, and be patient enough to help him learn how to adjust his way of living to form a mutually satisfying, mutually thriving romantic partnership.

I believe he was an Angel or deminangel ..but because he's a black man who was addicted plastic surgery that's why he was bullied. When Cher and Joan Rivers kept doing it ..people accepted cause they were white woman.but if a black person does it ... immediately they are branded as hating their race..And he was so loving,so giving ,so trusting..just like Mother Theresa. But because she was a woman of areligous occupation hence it was accepted bbut when he was showing the same love, trust ,care and generosity it was jeered, called out as malicious, evil ball because he's an artist and black man who was soft-spoken unlike other black male artist who were deep voicedvand hanging out in clubs and sexing around in the open.add the horrible stories of some evil Catholic priests then bingo.mmthats why MJ loves kids.it was so convenient ,so lazy and so evil thinking. He was a victim of our perception of men ,black men and black men who are entertainers and loved by millions.Sjame on us It's only US bullied him. But outside US there was no negative press about him or at least not as much as US.but Damn she was spot on..Phil Collins said once that when children see MJ they see money..He said so himself in his book Moonwalk, children are innocent, they excited bout things that we forget bout when we become adults, they don't want anything from him except his time and they never made fun of his looks or behavior.
