Have to agree that the 35mm is a good focal length. I remember shooting for my military base newspaper and the one lens I used a lot was the 35mm. Great for somewhat tight shots where a 50 is too long and a 24 is too wide. It allowed for some nice photos of people in work spaces without the typical ultrawide exaggerated look.

I agree with all your insights. As a physician, my hobby and stress outlet is also photography. Used the zeiss 35f14 for years and upgraded to the 35GM and love using it for everything. Great video!

I barely use mine. I love it on paper, and I love the output as well, but find it way too big and awkward. Weirdly, I don’t see the 24-70mm GM2 as unwieldly, and don’t mind packing it for vacation. My daily carry is now the 40mm 2.5, with the 55mm 1.8 Zony occasionally stepping in for variety.

Thanks Lucas - lots of STEM professionals are very creative in our downtime haha. Most of it is cropping in post for instagram? For video I resize 16:9 to 9:16 by zooming in 316%. Not ideal but vertical video quality isn’t great on any platform anyway

@@BokehTherapy Thank you! I do the same for video. I just hit a wall in terms of 4:5 compositions for photography - the rule of thirds for subjects is quite limiting in that format

I quite like the golden spiral for 4:5 vertical? See it a lot in landscape shots, looks very natural. These days I just try to put the subject as close to centre as possible and recompose in post

I only shoot 35mm my whole life, it was my first prime lens when I'm still using nikon... yeah nikon. 35mm is a story telling lens for sure.

From somebody who uses to get too close too often. I've got an addendum for that advice. Sometimes you aren't far enough either. A step back can often help frame clutter into context and create layering.
I had to force myself to look at whole scenes, study establishing shots in movies, and check out landscape photographers, because I was too close and looking back at my images they were just shots of strangers with no context.
There's a particular type of travel shot even that I wanted to achieve which is the epic minimalist landscape with the subject small in frame hiking away or sitting on the cliff edge etc. My close ups in these scenarios just made anywhere look like anywhere, and I had probably spent a lot of resources getting g to that particular spot just to not capture it in context at all.

Recently added a 40mm G2.5 to take the weight off the overall system. I understand 35 1.4 gm and 50 f1.4 gm are two completely different lenses. Which of the two lenses has been your "go to" for travel photography.

I owned the 40mm f2.5 for a while and loved it - it is super sharp and light. I took a lot of indoor shots while travelling, so ended up using the 35mm f1.4 GM 90% of the time. That’s my go to for travel I think, especially when family shots are needed. Thanks for watching!

Your videos started coming up in my feed, always happy to see another creator get started and going. To each their own, there's way more than enough gear promotion and hype on UA-cam, but linking it to improving mental health doesn't sit right with me. I agree with you from a general perspective as I also find a lot of mental benefits to photography, but it has nothing to do with specific gear and I'd never tell anyone to focus on that aspect of it.

Thanks for your feedback - I think mental health and photography are inextricably connected and I am trying to find new ways to bring these issues to the forefront. Of course no piece of gear will fix mental health, it is just another opportunity to have the conversation. I work with at risk youths in my day job from many different cultures where mental health is not even recognised as a reality, so raising awareness is still worth the trade off to me. I look forward to elevating the conversation as this channel evolves.

But that's also why I feel like tying that to gear that costs $1400 might be self defeating. So many people are already looking to solve their problems with gear and they'll instead just be short a bunch of money alongside the same problems they always felt.
I'm trying to think how I'd approach it to be constructive. I might take it from the angle of the focal length and give an array of suggestions as to how to acquire it affordably up to x price point. Could still include the gear keywords to improve SEO. But hey, I have no idea, I don't make videos and you're evolving this and in the rough, putting in the hard work. Much respect. I hope it keeps evolving in that direction!

Title and thumbnail don’t leave much room for nuance, so I am trying to leverage the SEO of a single piece of gear to drive a larger conversation. Man Sony is a hard sell to start with because they upgrade their cameras and lenses so often. It’s like committing a new shooter to a lifetime of GAS haha! I enjoy using the Zf more than Sony but the Sony results are undeniable.

That's really good video!
I was willing to adapt on 35 mm as it seemed to be ideal for light and simple traveling, but to be honest, photos from my zoom lenses taken on cca 35 mm were so little that it never justified purchase of a prime in this focal range. But maybe it is just because I did not give it a chance yet.

35mm isn’t my favourite focal length but when I only shot with it (needing something wider and faster for indoor portraits while travelling) I ended up liking a lot more of my photos. Give it a try you might be surprised. Thanks for watching! More content to come.

I have a 70-200 gm2 that I use as a hobby for photography of cars and motorcycles in action and I need to buy another lens to take with me when I go on trips with the family and to take casual photos of my children, etc. What do you recommend buying the 24-70gm2 or the 35mm gm? Thank you!

The 24-70 GM2 is a beautiful lens, but I am a prime shooter so 35mm GM is the one for me! You should rent them and see which you prefer?

just went trough all your vids, how do you produce this good of a quality content if you are starting out. I am amazed and kind of jealous!
Fuji shooter here. previous Sony. Loved the Sony glass, still dream about it. Did not love the shooting experience. Fuji just has a way in the files. The colours look nice and you can easily adjust the color temp without the need of a complete colour rebuild. Just nicer to work with. I do hear the newer bodies (newer than the A7III and a7RIII) have less issues with colors. The AF, DR and low light performance is awesome. Bodies just feel like crap.
Love the fuji's, still dream about the GM and sigma art glass (85 1.8 is also awesome)... you are making it a bit worse.

Hey thanks so much for the feedback! I am also a Fuji shooter but stopped upgrading after the XT3. Used Sony only for video work but their newer bodies and lenses are really great for photography. I still miss the Fujifilm only days, life was easier when I didn’t pixel peep as much and everything was SOOC!

@@BokehTherapy XT5 is nice, AF is close to A7III, still have a XT3 as backup/ 2nd body.
Iso 1600 -3200 is max though. 6400 for video is already crap.
For work it is not an issue as I light my scenes if needed.
Private newyears, first one awake for my youngest kid. The footage almost looks like my lens was broken or I licked the front and back element or something. Also wanted the fireworks in the background so iso 6400
made me dream/ contemplate also getting a sony again... Not eager beeing in 2 systems.

XT5 is an awesome camera! But yes for run and gun video work it is pretty hard to beat Sony. You just have tolerate the shooting experience for photos and hybrid work - let me know if you make the jump? Commiserations ahead of time for having to deal with two systems

Great channel! Photography really lifted me out of some bad times. I often wished that I photographed my colleagues during residency. Showing the angst, weariness, and humanity would have been really great. Anyways I hope that you keep up the channel!
BTW, have you ever shot with the Leica rangefinder system? I think that you might like it. It really forces you to have a different pace and workflow. There is something about having a simple menu, analog controls, manual focus, and a super compact system.

I'd go for a camera with a smaller pixel count if you want less noise at the pixel level. Also, the back's of people's heads aren't that interesting. There's nothing to connect with.

The Sony 35mm 1.4 is big and heavy, I have the Sony Carls Zeiss Sonnar 35mm 2.8 T* ZA which is small and light weight, I also have the excellent Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 35mm 2.0 Aspherical which is build like a tank, but still reasonable small an light weight and the optical image quality is outstanding, second to none ! These two 35mm Lenses together is more light weight than the Sony 35/1.4 !!! You can save money if you not get a 1.4 Lens, then you can get a new Camera with better IBIS or use a tripod ! Images with ISO 6400 looks like shit.

I love voigtlander lenses! Slower shutter speeds are hard for night time street photography hence f1.4. It’s the trade off for size and weight (unless you shoot manual focus lenses). Thanks for commenting!

@@BokehTherapy It is only one stop, if he had used a Sony A7II (or other new Camera) there would not have been a problem with the aperture and it do not hurt to use a tripod, it is better than crappy image with high ISO !

High ISO doesn’t bother me, as long as the colour doesn’t shift and there’s not too much banding. Tripod street photography would be interesting!

@@cameraprepper7938 You do know he uses a a7cR which is the pretty much the same camera as the a7rV with 7 stop ibis, minus some bells and whistles. Also with the newer sensors, images at 6400 are pretty clean these days from modern FF cameras. If you are bringing up weight of lenses, there should not even be any mention of tripods.

@@Eatmeraw 🤣"images at 6400 are pretty clean" you need glasses ! I always prefer as low ISO as possible, if the light gets too low a 1.4 aperture or IBIS do not help, only a tripod !!! I do not like the A7RC, the EVF is too small with too low resolution, there is no joystick and the articulating screen makes the camera too thick, it also has no second mechanical shutter, so it misses more than it give !
