Perfect video topic. Will watch later. I hope there are real optionscas the ftz really kills the aesthetic. Thank god for voigt lenses native
I’m surprised with the price difference that the Neewer performs better than the Megadap. I’m slowly leaning towards getting a Z6iii 😭
Megadap is better for autofocus! Haha the Z6III is nice, your Sony kit is probably more capable though (assuming you haven't sold it already!)
@ yea, but you know the typical GAS behavior lol
I am not a scientist like yourself so please forgive me if maybe I display some ignorance here. Regarding fungus, here is my simplified understanding of how it works and how you can stop it from happening or from reappearing after being removed. Fungus spores are everywhere, they cannot be avoided, they are in every breath we take. Fungus is like a plant, it needs three things to survive, water, food but unlike a normal plant, darkness instead of light. So if you deprive it of any one of these three things it simply cannot grow. Food, I'm not so sure where from but the microscopic dust inside a lens or even it has been suggested lens coatings. Water, from humidity, above 45 to 50% and darkness from keeping it in a case or a camera bag. I live in SE Asia and I do use a humidity cabinet to house all my cameras. If you live, say in Arizona, you would never have to worry due to the low humidity. So, according to this theory, despite where I live, if I just left my lenses out in a light filled area or used them on a regular basis, I should not have to worry. But, despite what I have said above, I'm still not willing to test this out in the real world.😮 Fungus does not randomly occur as if by magic and it is not inevitable.
Hi Gary, all very sensible and practical things to try! I don't have a dry cabinet, maybe I should invest in one? Thanks for the feedback!
I've used adapted glasses for years, and with my ZF, I don't. To me, the added lenght and weight aren't compatible with the ZF. So I stick to 4 lenses : 28mm SE, 35mm Pergear, 40mm SE, or TTArtisan 75mm.
Sounds like a great kit - I don't mind heavier lenses on the Zf myself but lots of options for everyone
Excellent and thorough comparison of these adapters, I haven't seen anything that even comes close. 👏🏻
Wow thanks so much - I felt pretty dumb spending all this time and money testing adapters so glad the video is useful for others. We really need an FTZiii!
Thank you for the excellent video. I also own the TTArtisan and Neewer adapter and can confirm your results. However, I would like to add a very important point: with the Neewer adapter, the focal length for in-body stabilization is set to 50mm and cannot be overwritten in the camera. This makes the use of lenses with a focal length other than 50mm problematic; it is best to switch off the IBIS in those cases.
Thanks for the input - I couldn’t figure it out, just thought the focal length was set inconsistently. Good to know it’s stuck on 50mm forever, hope it’s fixed in a firmware update by Neewer
There is a video from a user of the Zf and manual lenses here in Germany. Manu Gee: „Update: Neewer ETZ Adapter on Nikon ZF with IBIS“. He found out after consulting with Neewer that you can overwrite the line with the focal length specification in the txt file of the Neewer software by hand. To do this, you have to connect the Aparter to the Mac/PC with the enclosed cable, as with a firmware update. Now you can see 2 files: the file with the firmware and a test file. The text file contains the data for IBIS and the other lens data: maximum and minimum aperture for the EXIF data.
@@Ralf-en5tp thanks for the tip - sounds like a decent workaround if you mainly use one lens. Will rewatch the Manu Gee video!
nice manual adapters comparison for nikon Z, I wanted to ask if you get reliable or precise infinity focus in your TTartisan M to Z mount adapter using leica lenses and third party lenses, also in 0.7 or close focus and also in zone focus or range focus style. many affordable adapters can`t have precise focus written on the lens scale to set the focus. thank you
It depends entirely on the lens unfortunately - I can zone focus fine with the Leica 35mm f1.4 FLE V1, 50mm f1.4 ASPH, 50mm f1.2 voigtlander. Wider lenses have more trouble - the thypoch 28mm simera doesn’t line up for zone focus. That’s one of the problems with adapting unfortunately
Thank you for all of this effort and research into this! At the end of the day, which one of these sets of adaptors do you think you will end up using? It is great to see you still looking into AI-s. There are so many great ones, but as you touch on here, there is a lot to consider if you are going to purchase one. I can say first hand, taking the lenses apart is harder than I anticipated. They are sealed up quite tightly, ha ha.
Ohh you’ve taken them apart? I am not game for that, I have gone to Richard Haw’s website and got scared off by the lens operations haha! I will use the Neewer + Shoten adapter combo for F mount, and TTartisan for M mount lenses. Best of both worlds!
@BokehTherapy I have done some simple disassembly, but they have stuff to lock the threads which makes it pretty difficult to take them apart, even if you have the proper wrenches and things. I would rather pay more to ensure there is no fungus, but looking at online photos is not always the best, ha ha.
Haha yup pics are easy to fake and fungus grows right back. Need to trust the sellers
I’ve been shooting all my life on prime 35 and 50mm. (Nikon, LTM, x100T) I also have a 105 ais I solely take out for portraits , but I find it too narrow as a walking around lens. I just got the Nikon ZF and I’m debating if I should get the 24-120 4 zoom, or the 85 1.8. I’ve never used zooms before, but everyone and their mother keeps telling me to get the zoom as it’s super versatile.
I am a very biased primes only shooter, and 85mm is not that tight. My money went towards the 85mm f1.8 S. Many contenders have come and gone but it is still my 85mm of choice. Let me know what you go with!
Have you tried the Neewer adapter with a M mount adapter ? I use the ttartisan 6bit with a M to LTM adapter , but with my wider (35mm) lens, I unfortunately get some vingetting wide open.
Yes I have, M to E mount is pretty thin adapter so I didn’t see much vignetting. Stacking adapters is always tricky, I worry about the mounts getting stuck
Haha my first time in Japan was this march and I was surprised how often I got mistaken as Japanese. I only knew arigatou gozaimasu, and it was enough to get me around 😂 I visited most of the camera shops you did too, picked up a Canon L3 at box camera , along with a few LTM lenses I now adopt on my ZF! Love your videos ❤
Canon L3! I am trawling for a mint Nikon DF, will be chronicling that rather treacherous journey on the channel shortly haha. Thanks so much for watching and commenting
Thanks for another informative video. Leaves me wondering why Nikon has not fixed this issue initially with their Z mount cameras as at launch they seemed to really lean in on their older lens catalog to try and sell people on the Z mount. I tend to bring out my D5 when I want to shoot my vintage glass collection. Not as much fun as my smaller Z mount bodies but it does work with the MF lenses in a more natural way. Keep up the great work and I am looking forward to the next video.
I am hunting down a F mount DSLR right now in Japan - don’t have any old ones in my collection so trying to get a mint used copy from the archives. Video about it coming soon!
@@BokehTherapy I had a Nikon Df for a bit. Has the D4 sensor which was really nice. Auto focus was slow but was a nice camera to mount MF lenses to. Good luck finding something.. always fun looking exploring the used cameras with a mission.
Good to know - the used market here in Tokyo is insane haha
Awesome work on your video as always my friend! 😊 Unfortunately you only confirmed the adapter mess we currently have, if we want to adapt certain lenses and simulationsly want specific features 😅 Let’s see if nikon will release anything for the Zf / retro line up next year. I personally still hoping for an AF retro design lens with aperture ring 😇 Do you know the Voigtländer M to Z adapter? I think it is the best regarding correct zone focusing, because of the possibility of close focusing, but i don’t think it has any electronic contacts.
I'm honestly expecting Nikon to let us starve. I mean they released the ZF in 2023 of Summer and how many SE lenses did we see this year? None.
@IntrovertAmateur only way is to back to F mount and get a DF! Haha I haven’t tested the Voigtlander adapter, heard it’s great quality but unchipped. I guess if they chipped their adapters it would stop us buying their native Z mount lenses? Let’s see how Nikon follows up the ZF, surely they are a fan of money and there’s lots to be made in this segment
@Cleverconveyence I guess the Z6III launch cost a lot of capital, and perhaps the ZF success caught them off guard. I am impatiently waiting for a rangefinder ZS myself haha
I just got the Voigt M to Z and it is very nice build quality - not chipped though :(. The close focus feature on it is nice - makes my m-lenses sort of like a macro. I also have the TTartisan 6bit adapter and it's nice having the focus confirmation and it seems to read all leica 6 bit coded lenses and has gotten all of them correctly in EXIF. My only gripe on the TTartisan is it won't full mount a couple of my Voigt lenses but does full mount the my leica and zeiss. The voigt adapter fully mounts all of them with the locking click when mounted. I've reached out to TTartisan and might be looking at swapping for another copy.
Wait you didn't show us the complete table. Which adapter best covers the functions that you mentioned?
Ah sorry got lost in the edit. TTartisan and Neewer are the best, except the TTartisan vignettes with F mount lenses in my experience. Neewer doesn’t have the best build quality but functionality wise all it’s missing is accurate focal length EXIF data.
@@BokehTherapy does the ttartisan 6bit mtoz vignette with leica m lenses ? im very interested with the zf because the af confirmation is so much better than sl2s imo.
@@christionk TTArtisan doesn't vignette with M lenses on the Zf in my experience but it messes with zone focus alignment on some wider angle lenses? Still worth it in my opinion
Good video. No waffle, just the stuff that matters. I’ve chosen the TT 👍🏻
Haha thank you. I have a tendency to waffle so glad this one made sense
I tested the Neewer combo with a M42 Adapter. Works pretty well. The only downside could be the default focal length the Neewer Adapter transmits to the camera. In the EXIF data my M42 lenses are all marked as 50mm. The EXIF itself does not bother me, but i think the IBIS could be disturbed. I am not sure if this is really a problem, but usually you set up the camera for manual lenses with the focal lenght and max aparture. And as far as i understand it, this setting influences the IBIS. It still works though, bur i have the feeling it would work better with the right focal length information.
Yes I have that problem too - can’t change it out of 50mm on the Neewer. Glad to hear your M42 lenses are finding a new home, happy shooting!
One quick note. FTZ II does give focus confirmation, but the manual lens has to be chipped. Using Nikon AF D lenses as manual focus (since they don’t have motor built in) you get the green square. I haven’t tried other brands yet, but those do work. The thing is, the lens should somehow communicate with the camera the distance it’s focused on.
Ohh AFD lenses! Haven’t tried many of those, which one is your favourite? I have slowly but surely been collecting AIS glass, there are too many to count. Thanks for the tip!
@@BokehTherapyThe 28 AFD is by far my favorite. But the 24 is good too, if you don’t mind the distortion.
@@BokehTherapyMy AIS lenses don’t show the green square though.
@rgarciamainou I am testing out the 28mm f2 AIS - a very interesting lens! Haven’t added the AF-D to the comparison but picked up a 28mm f1.8 G to test out
@@rgarciamainouI’m using the ttartisan 6bit m to z adapter, with a dummy m to f and I get focus confirmation with my ais lenses. Works with focus trapping too.
Another excellent video, thanks 🎉🎉
Thanks so much!
I would like to add that Fringer EF-NZ II is the best for Canon EF lenses. Very active firmware update and also compatible with most of Canon Lenses, some Sigma and Tamron in AF-S and AF-C. Recommended!🎉❤
Oh fringer! Too many adapters to keep track of haha. Thanks for the tip!
I second the Fringer EF-NZ II. I can confirm it gives you both green box when focusing and eye AF confirmation with manual lenses. All you need to do is adapt manual glass to EF then onto the fringer works very very well.
Curious if you have any thoughts on the Z5? I’m actually so impressed with the Zf that I want a small, simple, inexpensive Nikon full frame Z mount backup, and from what I’ve seen, the Z5 seems to be a great camera and it’s under $1,000. I know it had some focus issues at launch but from what I hear, Nikon ironed them out and nailed the Z5’s focus in a firmware update. I shoot only portraits and headshots so I don’t need lightning fast focus.
I haven’t tried the Z5, the UI is very different from the Zf so haven’t dipped my toes in. The Z6iii is great but too expensive right now, not as good value
May I ask, during the sample images, are you using Lightroom presets or something of your own recipe? The colors look like film!
Hey thanks so much! Shoot raw and these are my own edits (not presets). The Zf has very flexible files to work with and low light performance is amazing
I love your content. I also studied medicine and such (acupuncture and clinical psychology) but I never practiced. I’m a photographer. I see a Venn diagram between science and psychology and photography. It’s a circle of seeing. PS: I just sold my Fuji Xt5 for the Zf Nikon, but kept my X100V. I love Fuji. Glad you gave them a shout out. The 35F2 is excellent but the 33 1.4 is astoundingly good. On par with the 50mm 1.8S.
The 33mm f1.4 has been sold out in my country for almost as long as the X100VI! Waiting for the XPro4 to see if I jump back into Fujifilm otherwise I am very happy with my Nikon kit
@ I have the X100V. I love Fujis rangefinder style cameras. I’ll never sell it. The XPRO 4 is going to rock. It’s a legend that looms in the future! Who knows when it will come. I love Fuji but they aren’t fast or good about meeting production. I’m lucky I grabbed my X100V at the beginning of the pandemic. It was unobtainable mere months after I got it. I’m very attached to it!
Haha I sold my x100V just before the shortage started. Plenty of stock at 30% off retail! Must be the only sucker that didn’t make a profit on resale though
This is amazing.
Welcome to the channel!
I just got the Nikkor 50 1.8S for my new Zf and it’s INSANELY good. It’s incredible.
It’s the best corrected S prime, and somehow the most affordable!
this isn't therapy ... and all the "non zf " nikons are ugly
Mmm to each their own. The Zf does look good, but just as many people hate the ergonomics
What kind of nifty flash did you mount to the camera in this video?
It’s a little LED light from TTArtisan. It’s very cute!
Whats the adapter I should search for to get focus confirmation with a f mount lens ?
That’s the next video! No perfect options, you need two adapters (E to Z or M to Z chipped then adapt to F mount) to make it work. Neewer, TTartisan, and Techart
Just received the Zf from Nikon USA … it came with a free GR-1 grip …it’s very nice .
Nice one! Think it comes as standard now not a Japan exclusive… haha enjoy the Zf!
very underrated channel.. keep up the great work sir.. and thank you for the information
Thanks so much! More to come
I want to get the Z6III so bad but my budget won't allow it at this point so I'm heavily considering the Zf. I don't quite like the vintage look or the ergonomics of the Zf but it's by no means an ugly camera, it's actually grown on me the more I look at it and the price puts it a bit more in reach for me. I just don't want to regret my decision if I choose to get the Zf.
@shadowmaster41 I would hold out until your budget allows for either then make the call then? Unless you need a camera right now of course. If you don't like the Zf you'll lose more money on the trade in / resale. If you do any video work the Z6III is the superior camera, photo only it will depend on ergonomics. Try the Zf in store with the Smallrig grip? The ergos are a hit or miss almost immediately for most people
@BokehTherapy understood. Thanks for that. I do photography at the moment with the Nikon Z30 so I've been working towards upgrading because of the different challenges I observe after each shoot. So I decided I'd save up and upgrade to something that I can do both video and photo competently and hold onto for the next few years.
@@shadowmaster41 let me know what you decide on - sounds like the Z6iii is the one for you if you use the Z30 right now. Similar control layout.
@@BokehTherapy my thoughts exactly. I'm trying to be patient 😅. I don't have access to that type of gear where I live so I can't try them out beforehand. Next year hopefully 💪🏽.
How long will that retro joy last though? I went from Canon 5d mkiii to Fujifilm system (full switch) back in the day and was XPRO user for years. I loved the retro feel initially, A LOT, but then.. tried to fix the ergos so I get a better grip on the camera.. then the physical dials which I initially loved started to be annoying because I'd accidentally change the settings whenever they catch on something (clothes, bag,..), plus I really only wanted to use few settings I fine-tuned, so once set I didn't use those dials much. So I sold my Fujifilm kit, and was only shooting medium format film camera for a while. Meanwhile prices of developing (and scanning) film skyrocketed, so I'm going back to digital. I definitelly want full frame, and torn between Zf and Z6iii. Zf has the looks, but then I already experienced that with Fujilfim XPRO and it does wear off rather quickly, so this time it won't be a factor for me. Z6iii has similar ergos that I loved on my old canon eos 5d. It looks like an average mirrorless, and can not be more boring, which is fine. I shoot mainly portraits & family & only using (fast) primes, but would like to get into video podcasts. If looks wouldn't be a factor, and given the above, which camera would you go for folks?
@tomxaak thanks for sharing. I used to run a 2 camera video podcast, full HDMI out is very useful. That alone might be reason to go with the Z6III. Retro doesn't have to be a fad if manufacturers treat it seriously but a lot of makers (even Fujifilm) think of these cameras as second tier enthusiast options. Hopefully the Zf line continues, maybe a ZS rangefinder next (I can dream!)
@@BokehTherapy ZS rangefinder sounds great. Have you had a chance to try the Hasselblad 907X? If money wouldn't be a factor, this would be at the top of my list (don't tell my Mamiya).
@@tomxaak mmm no I haven't tried any Hasselblad cameras... came very close to taking the plunge on the X2D system but don't think it's suitable for my workflow for now
Zf is best for the streets. It’s built like a tank and is more suited for prime lenses. I love doing city street night photography.
Me too - feels like it was made for that type of photography even though sports shooters have told me they use it for action too!
Nikon is kicking out a set of 1.4 primes (35mm, 50mm, 85mm). Nikon will cover 1.2, 1.4, and 1.8 primes so you'll have whatever suits you. And with how great their camera bodies, legendary Nikon colors, and now packed full of video features like RAW internal 4K, 6K, or 8K.. Nikon has shown to be such an amazing system.
It's a great time to be a Nikon shooter - hope the innovation continues!
I would get a Nikon Z7II or wait for a Z 7III.
Great cameras! Maybe they will repurpose the z7ii’s sensor in a new body first
The small rig, with the silicone won't scratch up your camera. I think I go with that one
That’s the one I went with!
The first 500 people to use my link skl.sh/bokehtherapywithjackwang12241 will get a 1 month free trial of Skillshare premium!
I always wanted to try out Skillshare, so I used the link after watching the video love your content trying to hold back my urge to buy zf, I need to photograph more before I invest into equipment again
Hello thanks so much! 1 month is enough to see how you like the platform. Zf is great, but any camera will do if it gets you out there shooting
How do you set the focal length with the E to Z adapter? I know the TT artisan has a dial to set it.
It doesn’t work great - setting the non CPU lenses in camera gets overridden by the adapter. Ttartisan has the best implementation
@@BokehTherapy The best option would be to open up the TT artisan adapter and use the electronics and add it to another passive Z to F adapter, but that would be a very technical job, to avoid vignetting. Honestly I use the TT artisan with the Urth m to f adapter and yes there is some vignetting and also some extra lens flare I think from light bounces inside the adapter. But I need the green box and focal length for the image stabilization. And last but not least the trap focus function. where you set the camera to only take a shot when its in focus, this works well with the tt artisan adapter, because the camera thinks its an autofocus lens. Please Nikon bring out a firmware update that allows the green box with manual lenses that have no chip
You’re right - I tested a whole bunch of adapters for the next video, and none are perfect and almost all of them are quite expensive. FTZiii please Nikon
I'm still waiting for proper vintage z mount to fit my ZF without any adapter. It should look really great.
Me too! Let’s see if Nikon does any more retro releases in the next 12 months
Hi Jack. I take snaps of whatever takes my fancy on any given day for pleasure and my own amusement. I post them to my IG page, and have been doing so for more that ten years, they are my life archive. There used to be photo albums in peoples homes, I now have IG instead. Seeing the changes that have taken place during that time in my world, and others, is wonderful. I cherish the connections I have made with others from various places, and from various walks of life, just through taking a few snaps. My pictures matter to me for these reasons and is why I regard myself as a happy snapper. Enjoy the rest of your day down under.
Thanks for reaching out Colin - I think photography is the best hobby, really nothing like shooting for yourself. Great to hear from fellow photographers it’s why I started the channel!
beautiful video! i love vintage glass but with my eyes, i cannot do manual focus anymore. great comparison! i love the out of camera look of the 1.2 lens
My eyesight is pretty terrible too - let’s see how long I can keep up manual focus. Nice to hear from you!
The A1II release hasn't aged well. That might also means that the A7V might not be a big update either.
I think I made the right call about this at the time. Original A1 still great, hope price comes down
@@BokehTherapy A7IV / A7CII shoots oversampled 7k (up to 30p) and neither the A1 nor the A1II can oversample 8.6k. Just doesn't make sense. The R5II is also crippled by the lack of oversampled 4k60p that will be in the R5CII, but this is worse.
“Entry level” Sony bodies seem to be the way to go. Don’t depreciate quite as much, I lost a lot on my A1 sale
Really interesting review, speaking as a fellow Australian, UA-camr, Nikon-shooter, and frequent Japan visitor. In fact, here in Tokyo now for work (Design academic rather than scientist) and have just purchased a secondhand SE to go with my 35. I agree with just about everything you say. I do think you're being a bit harsh on the F mount, though you do qualify that with some praise for their later digital cameras (I'd add my D700 as a legendary full-frame camera). Most importantly the 35 and 40 are apples and oranges. The flaws of the forty are what make it fun compared to the sharp but somewhat boring rendering of the 35. And I really bought the 40 for one main reason. In the absence of new small interchangeable crop (esp m43) cameras, the 40 and the 28 bring make for a great small kit. Perfect for the Tokyo streets.
Hello, nice to hear from you! Lots of overlap it seems. F mount has gone the distance, unbelievable how many optics are in the archives. I am trying to find a good DSLR to try out older lenses now. Thanks for reaching out!
Well done once again! Now I know that the 50mm 1.4 Z is not for me! That is a relief, as I already own the 50mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.2 Z. The Bokeh of the 1.2 Z and the rendering-very sharp and organic at the same time-beats the 1.4. The problem with the 50 1.2 Z is the size/weight, now that I am already lugging the Plena around the city centres. I like the look of the vintage Nikkor, but I don't like adapters and I think Voigtländer has many very nice MF lenses with better rendering (Swirly and dreamy wide open but very sharp when stopped down more than F4). They are better for street because you can change to "very sharp" by changing the aperture, not the lens!
Haha yes three 50mm lenses would have been a bit much to choose from, right? I just have one for every system I shoot with (one too many) lol. Not a fan of adapters myself, am trying to hunt down an old DSLR to test out vintage nikkors with!
Hey, well done. I am on the list for this lens when it is produced. It looks good.
Thanks for watching! It is a very nice option for everyone
I have the Zeiss Classic Planar 1.4/50mm coupled with my Zf. I would recommend this, if you want to match the Zf's aesthetics. This lens, or the Voigtlander 58 mm / 1:1.4 Nokton SL II - S.
Nice recommendations - thanks!
Can you make a video about the TZM-02 adapter? Would love to see some wild combinations with the ZF , like a brightin star 28mm Or a noctilux
I will see if I can track one down. The adapter video coming up next is already too long lol. Thanks for the suggestion!
i will stick with my 50 1.2 s and my 50 1.8 s. I love the 1.2. It has lots of character compared to the 1.8, but still has the bells and whistles. my 1.8 is for traveling. Great video!
All great lenses, Nikon shooters are spoilt for choice these days. Thanks for watching!
Waiting for Jack to do a Nikon Zf + 50mm f1.2 GM video lol
Haha thanks man! That video is not yet on the cards
Perfectly timed and informative video again Jack ! My Zf has just arrived with the 26 and 40 lenses for family days out and I went with the 40 1.2 voigtlander and Ai 105 2.5 as my slow down character lenses, I really hope Nikon do release a sensibly priced Ftz for purely mf to unlock the focus aids as it seems very expensive to go down the tt art or newer routes just for a dumb adapter to unlock these features, or could a firmware update unlock them?
It should be doable by firmware surely but can’t count on any company to deliver that consistently these days. Congrats on the Zf, it’s the one that has got me out shooting way more this year than last year
Why did I find this channel so late? Very helpful. Haven't seen much on this topic. I do own the 50/1.8S too and I am still shocked of the optical quality. I don't own any manual focus F-Glas. Tho I do own a few AF-D lenses and I feel screwed (pun intended).
Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel! Nikon has such a huge catalogue of lenses, much more content to come
