And Midnight.
And Dead Pigeon... idk if he's good
And FrostyXen
Maybe add the neuroscience of Symphogear with it as well, that could be his secret.
Everyone forgets about Oyff
I like to hear the console controllermaster/neuroscientist talk about anything anyday
haha that's epic, thanks!
"Bullshit can become a positive feedback loop"
I'm using this. Often.
Haha I'm honored!
Honestly these scientific videos are way more interesting for me than the actual game. btw sometimes when I play fast paced games for too long I get kinda bored and get to auto pilot mode, but I play way better when im not even focused on a game, my brain is doing the job for me
Same! That's exactly what I was thinking of with the last bit.
When I'm just on auto-pilot and not even caring I play so much better. Even though you may be deep in thought while on auto-pilot, the train of thought is so orthogonal to the Doom gameplay that it doesn't interfere with processing the input and actively improves the reliability of your output.
@@ControllerQuickSwaps my question is, if DOOM takes so much more resources from the brain why is it that my conscious experience is with the simple thought rathar than the task thats taking the majority of my thinking efforts?
ive always had this question when im on autopilt, sometimes i get so ditached from the game that i only remember im playing when im dead or am about to be..
@@mohamedouhibi5389 this is actually a really deep question about what differentiates brain activity that reaches consciousness from activity that feels like a reflex. It's a really tough question that has no clear answer yet.
There are a couple established things however. For one, brain activity oscillates- goes up and down, and we can quantity how much of different oscillation frequencies are present in different regions of the brain at a given time. Generally conscious activity is associated with high frequency/fast oscillations, and the absence of conscious experience is more associated with slow oscillatory activity/lower frequencies. One could imagine that higher frequency oscillation contains more information. A big theory right now is called the Integrated Information Theory of consciousness. This theory posits that consciousness is a function of the quantity of isolate-able information.
So the general answer to your question that I would give would be that since auto-pilot actions dont require much thought (e.i. its it's very easy and fast to get the dynamical system where it needs to go) it probably is less involved in the high frequency oscillatory activity in the brain, and thus is not contributing much information to the system, hence it is not a large part of our conscious experience.
This is all just an enormously oversimplified hypothesis. There's a tremendous amount of nuance for sure.
@@ControllerQuickSwaps what im getting from this is that consciousness is not necessarily focused on the biggest task the brain is occupied with, but "it" can "chose" what to focus on?
but that's kinda ignoring your "auto-pilot actions dont require much thought" statement
@@mohamedouhibi5389 I try to avoid the word "chose" as much as possible (decision over choices is better framing in my opinion). It's also hard to define what it means to be the "biggest task". Also attention in the brain is a whole extra massive topic haha. Haha consciousness is a fascinating but very very complex and multifaceted discussion.
At 13:40, by "this" I mean 'this system' in general. Particularly a lack of serotonin making you get stuck in your head may contribute to playing poorly.
Tied to this, perhaps also, arent dopamine and serotonin somewhat inversely proportional? And since gaming like other digital stimulus probably spikes dopamine ridiculously, you could be onto something
@@berserker_2886 There are a few interesting theories of serotonin, my personal favorites that it represents unexpected uncertaintainty and temporal discounting (valuation of future reward). Though I wouldn't describe it as 'inversely porportional', it probably works in a complementary manner, but while we have a pretty decent understanding of Dopamine's in Reward Prediction Error and action selection, the actual computations of Serotonin are still largely a mystery.
@@ControllerQuickSwaps im not sure if its just when using medications that it creates a situation where the overproduction of one comes at the expense of reduction of the other, just something I read that when one gets too high it can lower the other, it would kind of anecdotally make sense since as i say, the snri seemed to improve the gameplay in that instance, probably the norepinephrine sharpening the physical reflexes and focus but the serotonin keeping you calm enough not to get flustered and lose composure when you miss a shot or get the good old no target when trying to chainsaw on 5hp on a final sin un run with 2% of the icons health left 😂
@@berserker_2886 oh yea there are all kind of complex interactions, I wouldn't be surprised if a paper found a negative correlation between the 2 in specific brain regions. But yea, keeping your composure to get that UN on the Icon is the result of a whole cocktail of neurotransmitters and neuromodulators and (I'd say) you're thinking about it in the right way.
@@ControllerQuickSwaps well, theory in motion, by no means a "controlled study" taras nabad master level, yesterday died twice completing on nightmare, very encouraged, this morning tried on extra life mode, lost all my lives and didnt finish (5 lives by the coin room?) I always feel like I play worse when "the stakes are higher", if i know nothing is on the line i play calm and collected
Well, if it isn’t another doomtuber on the rise. Nice content, looking forward to seeing you grow.
Stop looking down here
Oh god I looked.
3:27 I’ve been trying to master the full auto shotgun by killing pinkies and I Immediately got excited and thought to switch to the shotgun when I saw it in your gameplay
Haha respect for full auto usage, I rarely use it myself but it definitely makes you feel like badass when you pull it off well!
After 6.66 update, the auto shotgun rips!
This video helped me get drastically better at doom eternal and beat the campaign on UN for the first time.
If you're feeling rusty or tired, take a shower, it'll help way more than you think.
I never really expected such great educational stuff on Doom Eternal, thanks for the great video!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Also I love your name!
So basically let me get this straight without any confusion
The keys are BE calm, focus, don't wait, don't think about a plan or overthink and be more confident
I'm incredibly dumb so I didn't understand most of the vid but I'm filled with serotonin with me daydreaming about using these tips, thank you
Although my biggest problems are dealing with marauders and other serious ones like reaction timing, Quickswap misups and being cocky
Yea I'd say the most important one is be calm, and try to make the "right moves" subconscious with practice.
I needed this video, I'm always too harsh on myself when I'm not playing to my own expectations.
Yea it's the first reaction we all have. It's paradoxical that it makes us play worse. Hope this helps you out for the future! :)
I am too, it legit stresses me out some day because of the huge gaps in my performance
You lost me a few times there, but I got the idea. However, I think i get it. A great watch, you're quite underrated.
I really appreciate that, it means a lot to me.
Amazing video once again. Not only did I learn something interesting I also learned how to be a better player! Keep up the good work
Awesome content. In future videos can you do a tl;dr at the end that summarizes the primary ideas into bullet points? I only ask so I can more easily use the information to improve gameplay. The takeaway after a first watch from today seems to be 'don't get too invested in what happens during gameplay and just continue to adjust to what's happening.' I would be really curious to see a neuroscientist's guide to approaching ultra nightmare, since the added stress of failure can really warp the player's view of what's happening. Hope to see more content like this!!
That's a really good idea! It's probably gonna be some time before I do another one of these, I need to figure out what made that first one so much better than the others. But I'm definitely gonna do this in the next!
You got the main bullet point! I'd say the big three are:
-Ignore bugs and when something goes wrong so your brain can get back into the flow of things
-take note of how much exploration you're doing in your gameplay. If you're exploring too much *or* too little (too little would impair how well you adapt to unforeseen changes in the situation) that can also contribute to play sub-optimally.
-Make sure you're passively focused on what's actually coming in from the game and not getting stuck in your head. I say 'passively' because this needs to be balanced with not getting too invested (since that's how we focus, but also amplifies the impact of mistakes).
@@ControllerQuickSwaps Looking forward to it. You've got a super interesting niche for this type of content and present it well. Looking forward to future content!
After all of those shitposts this kinda content came like a breath of fresh air
Haha yea, and this has been in the works from before all of my recent shitposts. It just really takes 2-3 weeks to make these 😅
But I do want to cut down my shitposts even if it means less frequent content.
@ControllerQuickSwaps hehe I wasn't referring to your channel. Was talking about my youtube in general which has gotten full of doom eternal shitposts lately. Not that I do not enjoy em but this was another level of 'enjoyment'. Candy for the curious mind😆
Another great video and footage! Keep it up, man!!!
Just an idea - make a short gameplay clip and use it as an example for what you are explaining.
Thanks so much.
That's a great idea! I've considered it, I really should do it but it would make the time required to create these videos increase dramatically.
THIS sir, is quality content and totally what I am personally looking for. I could give you 10 topics to cover if you're interested.
As for the video: excellent pacing and explanation. However there's too many technical expressions that would require at least a definition and/or a schema to explain a mechanic. Example: illustrate what a differential equation is (you totally lost me on that part, even after listening to it 3x I don't get is as there too many references to abstract concepts like algebra and stuff).
yea you're totally right, I should do visualizations. But it's a lot of work, so I may collab with someone to have animations in the next one. But we'll see!
the blood maykr example reminds me when a headshot didn't count and i was slightly annoyed then its shot went through the wall and now im just pissed and wanting to turn the maykr into red mist
Haha I can relate to that so much
5:00 i thought you studied psychology and now your casually pulling out differential equations as an example
Haha yea that stuff was learned in Computational neuroscience (what I'm studying now)
Sometimes I just need a rest from the game, I felt burned out and then nothing is pushing me forward, I'm unmotivated and don't playing like I should.
After several days when I want to play Doom Eternal, I start the game and play a lot better than usual.
That's a good point, burn out is definitely real
@@ControllerQuickSwaps Yeah it's like I'm bored with the game so I don't care how I play, I'm not motivated to do flashy quick actions I felt like I saw everything and cannot progress.
@@WarframeCrunch oh yea when you lose motivation your combat can deteriorate so fast in this game haha
I was just asking myself this last night. I was doing so good on SGN master level (for me I mean) and then I had to go into that double marauder fight in the green slime with 28 health and no armor (nightmare difficulty) and I managed to win and then fell apart in the next arena.
haha yea that can happen to me as well. The adrenaline from an intense fight bleeds into the next encounter where I'm less focused on staying calm and then bam, I'm dying in an easy arena.
@@ControllerQuickSwaps I fucked up my ultra nightmare run last night, my first serious attempt- the two mancubus in the deep pit in cultist base shortly before you get the SSG. I was doing so well and then I made a stupid mistake. This is literally the only game I’ve ever played where I van die 30 times in a row and want to keep going, that locus of control you were talking about - the game has instilled in me the belief that I can succeed I just need to get better.
@@ControllerQuickSwaps another odd thing I experience, sometimes I’ll finish a really intense fight, like the holt slayer gate which I never had the chance to play the “easy” version of - I’ll complete the fight and then like 5 minutes later I can barely remember how I did it. Like when you wake from a dream snd try to remember it and it gets real hazy.
@@nerdoutreachprogram5358 Nice! Yea The locus of control is so important. That's why bugs are especially detrimental to this game. But when things work properly it's so good.
Yea I've thought a bit about why we dont remember how we played. I think it's because, as we learn and practice the right actions they become more and more automatic, like reflexes, which are processed more subcortically.
great analysis!
I didn't understand much of what you've said, but this was still very interesting.
Yea I think I'll have to simplify the next one a bit more. It was nice to experiment though :)
@@ControllerQuickSwaps Maybe you do. I just found it hard to comprehend what you were saying. Either you video was hard to understand, or i had a malfunction in my brain. Either way, great video, cant wait for the next one.
@@andriidesu2936 haha tbh when I'm listening to my own video I have a hard time following myself as well so I need to identify what I could do to be more clear.
you should totally interview hugo martin. I think there's a lot of interesting conversation there.
I would absolutely love to, we'll see if he does another round of interviews
@@ControllerQuickSwaps maybe you can also interview the insanely good doom players to see any commonalities/differences in their mindset :O
@@euclxd8033 ooh that's a great idea!
Another amazing video! You have great skills and I'd like to see 3x damage runs
Thanks for answering! Yea I think that I'll try doing one soon.
Late to the party but, i feel my poorer play sessions are probably down to the balance of neurotransmitters, excess norepinephrine = bad, excess glutamate = bad, when im on tilt i play awful, sleep i find is a big factor, sounds obvious but also serotonin/dopamine production can be somewhat inhibited in case of bad/not enough sleep
Oh yea the neurotransmitter lense is always super interesting! Though I like to think about second order explanations- why, during healthy functioning, is the brain is allowing itself to experience this excess excitability?
@@ControllerQuickSwaps probably overactivation of the amygdala causing a stress response, spiking cortisol, glutamate and epinephrine/norepinephrine, definitely in my case i feel like im a stress-head anyway, ive been prescribed different meds in the past for anxiety etc, pregabalin which increases gaba that sometimes made me calmer but i found the drop in adrenaline slowed my weapons changes down i was just massively less stressed, I also had tramadol once for a back twinge a few years ago and my 2016 gameplay went through the roof whilst on them, they stimulate serotonin but also norepinephrine, creating a paradoxical calmness, definitely an interesting part of gaming that people seldom think about
This is a very in-depth, scientific explanation behind the phrase "adapt and overcome".
Thank you so much for this amazing video!
this shits so confusing but props to you for making it entertaining and somewhat understandable for a dumbass like me. stellar content, keep it up!
Haha yea a lot of people struggled a bit more with this one, so the next one I definitely will spend more time simplifying the explanations.
TLDR: just vibe
Pretty much
You could make a series of this video. If you dumb it down more for me I'd love it. This was great though! Appreciate it.
Haha yea I was experimenting a bit with providing high level info but I think it definitely got a bit out of hand 😅
Really good vid 💪
thank you!!
Hugo Martin saw this!
He did? :O :D
Video was great! As always
Comment was great as always!
I'm only good at quickswitching and chainsawing, everything else is newbie level 😛
You're good at chainsaw??? Impressive, I suck at it
@@ControllerQuickSwaps I just do it like every 30/40 seconds so I guess I'm average
@@erykzysk3330 haha ah no I was just joking about me being bad at pressing one button 😂 but you're right there really is skill involved in chainsaw timing
Does this explain why sometimes I play amazingly on nightmare and sometimes horribly?
It's my best bet on why :)
@@ControllerQuickSwaps Thanks for these videos. They're very interesting and make me play DOOM more!
Somehow this video is much easier to understand *fully* after taking a first semester math course. That meaning, I understood the important parts before then, but not everything.
Was that intentional?
Haha wasnt intentional but completely makes sense. There were a lot of high level math concepts in this one.
If you ever get the opportunity to take a Dynamical Systems course that would also be great. That was the approach I took in this one.
right on the spot
Bravo! It kind of answered my question about doing a discussion post and playing or watching a gameplay video. I am not focusing on the game, just reacting with my learned skills. I hope my interpretation was in the ballpark, lol. I find the Taras Nabad ML the most fun. Long, but fun.
I'm glad you found it a satisfying explanation! :)
@@ControllerQuickSwaps, definitely!
Me with epilepsy: 💀
to be honest if i ever feel like the noise is consuming me i take a 5 minute break it helps
This.
Breaks are HUGE for long challenging play. Gives your system some time to burn off the noise.
@@ControllerQuickSwaps yeah most the time it makes me feel less like i am dead on the inside
@@heliax9924 hahaha omg *mood.*
how do u get 3x damage on console though?
I play on PC with controller 😅
@@ControllerQuickSwaps lol that makes sense! I was hoping to up the challenge and do the same on Ps4 but I guess not haha. Great video though man!

So that's why I suck when I play UN xD
Precisely 😂 UNs make us suddenly start playing like trash
yo tf, you the guy from yale university?
haha yale?? noooo, the most prestigious university I've ever attended was Brandeis, I'm not even on Yale's radar haha
Is his controller still working?

Bruh I love the concept of your channel and these videos but you really gotta learn how to speak in layman's terms I'm constantly getting lost
Haha yea I experimented with going more into the high level terminology with this one. But it seems like a very common feedback has been 'no math, go back to the conceptual framework'.
Thanks for giving your feedback :)
Hey
Hey tsup
@@ControllerQuickSwaps I haven't watched this yet but it's in my watch later. Your last neuroscientist video was... Different. Lmao.
Haha appreciate the views. Hopefully this one is informative and entertaining!
@@ControllerQuickSwaps It was good! Interesting how we learn. I'm currently reading "make it stick", a book on learning. There's a lot of interesting parallels in this video that it has on information recall.

666th view!
You're welcome lol
LEZ GO!!!
Hold up... You can bait Murder shields with lock on rockets? I've beaten this game at least 5 times and I never knew that.
Haha yea I learned this from other players, there's some amazing people on the community. I think Sylar discovered this but I learned it more directly from MuricanEagle and Mr. No Life
Finaly u can get gud!
Dude I have been so pumped waiting for your next video
Haha I hope it didnt disappoint 😁
Getting the low health message in the hud is so annoying and you only search health, thats something i like, doom 16 only said low health but eternal in red with de message
I always wonder of how quick and how far the brain has to go to get past problems also how condition of the environment can show the result either grater or smaller outcomes keep up the work.
Oh yea there's some really interesting nuance in the details of how it gets done, that were a bit too complex for this video. But it's really fascinating and beautiful stuff
I notice that when i get burnt out for a while after it passes my skill has increased.. if that makes sense.
That's interesting, could be that it's the growing pain itself that's burning you out. Perhaps you're subconsciously putting yourself in tougher situations and challenges to trigger the improvement.
Dude same, I put in like 16 hours into tf2 sniper after a major break from sniping, and then I played like crap for a bit before suddenly hitting airshots on soldiers like I used to (if not better)
That explains why I play awesome on Nightmare then turn to shit on Ultra-Nightmare😅😅😅
Haha I feel that so much
Answer: play the damn videogame
Great video, as always a lot to learn. It's like PCs, we just give some brain computing power to another thought that keeps interrupting the main job, making you less aware of it, like multitasking. I also saw your discussion on not being really present in the game and doing better, i experience this a lot when playing minesweeper while also listening to music and being deep in thought. I think it's because you are less aware of the present and it's more repetition of learned rules without having the fear of failing.
But i'm unsure on one thing, i thought that dopamine was the primary hormone being activated when playing video games? My understanding is that dopamine is connected to emotions, and activates when you are scared of an enemy or happy that you killed it, while serotonin is more objective completion based, you feel good about yourself after completing a task, overcoming and bettering yourself... but i guess killing an enemy is also an objective.
Computer analogies are amazing and work very well for analyzing the brain imo.
With regard to the neuromodulators, dopamine is definitely a huge part of the gaming experience but it's hard to say which is the 'primary' neuromodulator. There are so many different regions of the brain involved and each encounter different levels of different neuromodulator. You're not wrong to say that dopamine is huge. But simultaneously there are a hundred other huge things happening.
We *understand* dopamine the best so we're tempted to say it's the most important. But this may be merely because we so poorly understand the more nuanced effects of serotonin.
In my current understanding dopamine's main roles are short term reward prediction error and excitability (e.g. movement) while serotonin has a much more nuanced impact on cognitive flexibility (learning), inhibition of impulsivity, and generally encoding longer term unpredicted uncertainty. Uncertainty is particularly relevant in the context of goals and it could simply be an alternative way of thinking about the same thing. Neuroscience tends to have many ways of describing the same process.
@@ControllerQuickSwaps All of this is so interesting, you gave me a lot of new things to read up on in more detail. Thank you for your response and the video, looking forward to the next one :)
Fucking awesome xD

Great vid, boss. I'm more focused on learning a different game than Eternal, but your talks are great, because they apply to virtually any game.

I would have generalized the math part a lot more, considering that it wasn't super important to the conclusion -- maybe throw in a block diagram or something instead.
The gamers are visual creatures 👀
Yea I'm talking to fatmetro about collaborating on some animations in the future.
I wanted to get deeper into the math on this one, but yea I think it was a bit too much especially considering that it wasn't neccessary for conceptualizing.

Its just sad that you have to "anticipate" bugs in this game. It would just be so much more enjoyable if you could just play it...good stuff though!
Yea for sure, I always tell people, when you're trying to UN the crazy hard master levels you're really just flipping a coin until you get a run with no run-ending bugs.
tbf tho if ur good enough to play the game properly, u can recover from bugs quite fast, as they are somewhat minor, unless ur playing on UN coz eventually u will die to a bug
