Forcing myself to start learning Tommy's songs, from Song for a rainy morning and The Wide Ocean to harder pieces like this really took my guitar playing to another level, and i've been playing 15 years
same man. i can play songs of this level too and it’s made me
really proud of myself because it sounds so cool. been playing 11 years. really got into fingerstyle about 4 years ago
I've been playing for ten years and I'm really into fingerstyle and want to learn some of Tommy's songs like this one, but my question is how do you even go about learning something like this? Did you just work it out by watching videos like this? I'm not bad at that but he plays this so fast that its hard to see what he's doing all the time
@@jakelindsay268 hi jake. learning songs of Tommy’s level is a pretty gradual process. i don’t know how far in you are into fingerstyle techniques but the fundamentals i would say you NEED to be able to do most of his songs are Travis Picking AND hybrid picking. there’s a video by Reverb where Tommy briefly teaches the alternating bass technique and breaks it down into small manageable exercises that teach you the motor skills to move on to slightly harder stuff. takes a bit to get used to so be patient and do it clean.
a good song for someone who’s starting in this style is Freight Train, as he will say himself. look into that. don’t jump into songs right away tho, obviously. that’s going to be depressingly hard.
and yes.. it can be really difficult trying to learn his material just by watching. a lot of things going on. if you need a teacher for Tommy’s songs and fingerstyle in general, Tim Van Roy’s patreon or free YT is an amazing source. has tabs and explanations if that’s what you need.
a lot of fingerstyle is slowing things down, learning bar by bar and practicing it until it starts becoming fluent. it will become easier in time but it’s pretty complex so don’t feel bad about your playing like i have in the past. most importantly, have fun!
