I told Tommy, “I’d give my life to play like that!” Tommy said, “I did!”
wow
The whole world is grateful too.

We are all blessed 💖
It might not be true but that is 100% what he would say.
A very witty fella.
the best acoustic guitarist of all time
Aleksander misk is the best
@@leonardoLMK But shut up
No
I agree and an all arround a great man
@@leonardoLMK he is scrounger of music
Imagine the versions he's played to himself with no one listening.....
damn!!!
That's a brilliant thought actually
The cia is always listening
Bro spot on I wish I could hear the extended version
and this is like nothing else
IMHO, this performance of one of your most hauntingly beautiful, sensitive compositions showcases you at the peak of your powers as an artist, Tommy. Bravo.
I agree, it's maybe my favourite composition by Tommy. For me it sounds so evocative of a misty winter's Sunday morning in rural Australia.
His touch sensitivity on this song is amazing but as you say ...it is a beautiful , haunting piece of Music that really takes us somewhere. This is the first time I heard it....
Stepping the key down makes this even better than all previous versions. His playing matches...captures the essence.
@2centavos By ear. I knew it was tuned a whole pitch down by the bottom string as it was not a D pitch but a C. Look for his other YT videos where he plays the song in the normal key. You will hear the difference. The lower tuning is much better IMHO.
Tom and Phil were born to do this. Enable mere mortals may attain such standard, hmm, A gift, I wish.
Tommy... i am one of those who wait
God bless you and your family
Greece loves you
A comment that is as meaningful as the composition itself and the beautiful human who has such wonders in his soul.
Isaiah 40:31 is what it's about . Hopefully.
You would have to asked him.
This is the song that introduced me to Tommy emmanuel. Today the date is 31'st of may and i want to wish you a 'Happy birthday. If you are reading this tommy i wish you good health , happiness and joy,and keeping making music . You are a gift to the world. -your biggest fan.
Like a smooth river rolling beneath a sunset made by God.
Those who wait on the Lord will rise up with wings like an eagle
I’ve been listening to music all my life and I’ve heard tens of thousands of songs across dozens of genres. When I heard Those Who Wait for the first time close to a decade ago it stuck, and now I can say it’s one of my all time favorite compositions ever.
Yeah this song composition is on another level. It has a depth we can't explain.
same here
It was the first song on "Only", the first cd of his I bought, and it changed me and the course of my life. Amazing, beautiful, and forever grateful, brother❤️
Nicely said Nathan - he's top 5 musicians in the world today.. Absolutely awe inspiring for multiple generations around the globe - Very rare place to be..!
Yep.
I remember hearing on the radio in the late 80's that you were heading overseas to pursue a solo career. I was taken aback for selfish reasons because I would no longer be able to get to your gigs. But you were so good that I felt you deserved a world stage. I felt the same thing about your brother Phil too. The world didn't have UA-cam then. Now, although not as good as your live gigs, what a treat, seeing your solo performances or your collaboration with other guitar peers. I'm living in a fortunate time that may have never happened if you had not believed in yourself. Thanks Tommy.
I wish they played music like this on our Radios today
The best bit was the guitar playing
The way Tommy closes off the sound with his fingers to the frets at the very end ... it feels like an acceptance of death after expressing a beautiful life. The finality of that gentle gesture is a dramatic gesture. It chokes me up, how you can almost feel his reluctance yield to acceptance. And the song is over.
As a guitar player for 60 years, this song hunts, my soul, 24 seven. Saw it live I was stunned.
I understand your comment so clearly, Peter.
New headphones bought just for this
There's a bit of "Right here waiting" inside but it's an amazing tune, congrats Tommy.
Esistono cover di questo brano fatte con violini, pianoforte e altri strumenti diversi dalla chitarra. Quando la musica è musica lo strumento nn conta più. Tommy è un musicista....e anche un chitarrista.
Thank you, Tommy Emmanuel!
Considering myself an intermediate, I’ve played guitar most of my life.
Perhaps I’ve been under a rock, but I actually heard this song for the first time today… and it literally brought me to tears.
Now it’s my passion to both learn and share it with others!
Wow. Just wow.
I just watched this again. It brings me to tears this track. It's soooo beautiful. And he plays it here sooo cleanly. He is such a talented man. I am so blessed to have had him as part of my life. Thank you Tommy.
He has a lot of strength in his left hand particularly. That’s partly why this works so well. Pull offs and hammer ones.
Truly an Angelic being: music belonging to God’s kingdom
There’s no one else in the world that can make an acoustic guitar resonate and sound the way Tommy does it. He really bends it to what he wants. This is the true meaning of an instrument being an extension of himself.
His hands are partly wood, and the strings are partly flesh
Michael James Kugel strings tuned to flesh
Poetic!
You make life better Tommy Emanuel
You sir inspired me to pick up my guitar after 30yrs of not playing! ❤️
Are you still playing 3 months on?
@@maxthomson9440 No! 😣 😣 Life keeps getting in the way for me and this style of playing is so much harder to get than the heavy rock I used to play!
I used to play 8+hrs a day.. To get good it's got to be ur passion. Unfortunately it's not mine any more as I have others now.
At least I can really appreciate the talent of others now. Good luck with ur passions.
@@Cloppa2000 That's alright, as long as you have new passions which make you happy! I think having a passion is incredibly important in life as it gives you motivation for many things. And yes I completely agree, finger style guitar like this can be very discouraging to hear due to how insanely difficult some of it is haha. Have a great day :)
How does this not win a Grammy???
Grammy's are for dried-up Beyonce. Not good artists.
I’ve always said Tommy doesn’t play the guitar he is the guitar that the music flows from...
I swear that the guitar was invented for Tommy
Quante chitarre sono .... Con lui sembrano 3 con basso e percussione. Musicista immenso
This is the song that changed the way I see music. PBS was playing his concert and this song caught my attention from another room. All these years later, this is still my favorite song.
Words fail to describe what happens in my soul when I listen to this piece... Thank you Tommy for touching our hearts in this way😍🙏
Tommy has said that he plays Maton guitars not just because they're Australian, and sound great acoustically, but because they have the best electronics, pickups, and mic tone he's ever heard. This production really shows that off! Incredible sound.
Una delle cose piú belle che ho mai sentito da una chitarra acustica.......diritta al 💓
One of my favorite Tommy songs!
Heard it live in 2018
I can confirm it is gewd

Makes the hairs on my neck stand up every time I hear this, and always puts a tear of joy in my eye. The Master at his finest.

Tommys guitar is his voice, such a beautiful master of the guitar. Thanks TE
His right hand work is incredible. Not only is he precise vertically, but horizontally. He thins out the bottom end by moving toward and away from the bridge at the perfect times to fit the song. He uses finger style along with a pick at just the right times. It all contributes so much to how the song comes across, not just whether he can play the notes perfectly in order
Tommy...I've lost count of the number of your performances of _Those Who Wait_ tune I've seen. I love them all, but this one...is...transcendent. The world is a better place with your music in it. From the bottom of my heart...Thank you, brother!
Hello Great Tommy. I just read that you will be in Spoleto at the end of the year. For me it's beautiful, fantastic news, because for me you are the greatest guitarist in the world. Unfortunately, I have my partner with Alzheimer's, and I really have no way of being able to come and admire you, you and your great guest. I live in Cerqueto di Marsciano, about 45 minutes from Spoleto. Maybe I will seem like a fool to you, but I would be immensely happy to be able to host you here in my small town, sorry, host you. We have a small church with a huge old organ and exceptional acoustics. I begin to pray now with the immense hope of seeing you here. Thank you immensely, thank you for your wonderful unattainable playing, for being a special musician. Thanks Tommy. Forgive me if I disturbed you
Jesus is the Way and the Truth and the Life!
I’m waiting for Him to return and make everything new!
Everything sad untrue!
Beauty song Tommy boy! Reminds me of God’s glory!
You are a CERTIFIED GUITAR PLAYER
We all know he’s great! He has proven it over and over!! But this piece with this tone! Wow!!! 🤘🤘🤘
You should hear live it’s even better
Tommy sei e rimarrai unico! Che composizione sublime, esecuzione emozionante. Grazie per tutta la tua meravigliosa musica che hai scritto e suonato per rendere questo mondo più bello.
There is a story here so emotional it only speaks via guitar.... Everyone can feel it and it doesn't need an explanation.. listen to questions next !!
Beautiful Tommy!
I use to listen this music in car alone and and on my bed with my favorite headphones. For me I believe this song has soul healing vibe. Never get tired of listening to this beautiful masterpiece. Thank you Tommy.
In addition to being in a category of your own Tommy [as a player], this song, Those Who Wait is among my favorite songs of all time. Its simply gorgeous, and brings tears to me. Music is emotion! If I am unable to evoke emotion with my music, I have failed. I have attended your concerts about 8 times: the latest in Boston about 3-years ago. I met you about 13-years ago when you played the Charles Hotel in Cambridge, Massachusetts: the second show. I was able to meet and speak with you for about 10-15 when at this time you were very gracious. You were just making a name for yourself in US at that time [I believe]. I remember thinking, this guy is likely the most amazing player on the planet and there are 8 people in the audience. I couldn't believe it. Your music has brought much joy to me, and many other people I've turned on to you. Rarely do I enjoy remakes of any great tunes. You have a special ability to do your own rendition and its great. The fact that you wrote this song places you in a special category. Bravo !
God bless you & your family, for sharing you life & talents, in Jesus name!
I got to see Tommy perform this in 2018. He had recently returned to the States after the passing of his sister and brother. My own father has passed a month before. I was able to tell him that, as well as pass my condolences at the Meet-and-Greet before the show. The feeling with which he played this song that night brought tears to my eyes. It will always be one of my favorites for that reason. This version is just as moving!
Holy shit - this is awesome.
This song hits me everytime I hear it. Thank you so very much Tommy for being who you are! 🙏
Words are inadequate. This just moves me deeply.
I really love this song. Please come to Japan again.
Tommy can tell story with his music. The verse of the song is in minor key which provokes sadness and depression. From verse to chorus Tommy wrote a beautiful key transition from minor to major which feels just like seeing the long awaited light after the darkness. I got punched so hard evertime I hear that transition.
Isa.40:31 Those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings like eagles. They shall run and not be weary. They shall walk and not faint.
That's what you get when you dedicate your heart, your mind, your soul, your spirit and your body to music. Someone told me once that the hands are the tools of your heart. Well, here's the proof. 🙏🏼
Me Too! I would Give My Life to Play Like That!!
This version is much better than the old one , so much feeling , the guitare is about to cry haha .great Tommy ❤️
The tune that made me appreciate Tommy as a composer, not just a phenomenal player. Most are just one or the other.
Not a phenomenal player? The man has no competitor. He is the best there is.
Roger Duyong couldn’t have said it better myself
@@ruralparadise8901 i guess Dustin just made an emphasis on how beautiful are his tunes, i guess there is no doubt Tommy is a master and out of class performer
Compositionally, I love how he slowly builds tension, then releases it in the "payoff" section. In performance, I love the tension-building rubato.
こりゃぁ生で聴いたら本当に痺れると思うわ。
めちゃくちゃ素晴らしい演奏。
レコーディングごとにちょっとずつアレンジされてて、そのどれもが本当素敵。
ああー!もう本当に好き!!
I just watched the movie "austrailia"...somewhere over the rainbow has awhole new meaning to me. Great movie and even better guitar playe!
Why do I always smile when I sit here watching him. This track is beautiful. What a blessing he has been in my life.
This is the only Tommy Emmanuel song that I (as a 'meh' guitar player) felt an overwhelming urge that I just had to learn. After many many hours of practice I got it down and would comfort myself just laying on my bed, eyes closed, and playing it while my mind wandered. One day I went over to a friends house who was an excellent electric lead player in a local rock band and saw the acoustic sitting there so I picked it up and started playing it. He said something like "ahh what is that mellow crap your playing, it's boring!", but I continued playing to the end and we went and did something else. The next day I go back over and he says, "Hey, can you play me that song you were playing yesterday again? I've had it stuck in my head all day!" That's how you know you wrote a good song...
BEAUTIFUL Tommy !!!!! Thank You . I was just sitting here pissed off and now I'm not LOL
Never fear AI. In a million years it will never have the capacity to sense or feel the depth of music like this. This lies exclusively in the human domain.
Dear Tommy,
That instrument in your hands sings like a choir of forest woods come to you alone to project their beauty and spirits contained within, a perfect guitar for a flawless performance of a composition complete with unmatched understanding of the human condition, a musical utterance which seems to define and redeem all of us.
I can claim 71 years. I have been in the trenches with a guitar since age 16. But, what I do best is listen. "Those Who Wait" is the most beautiful composition I have ever heard. Upon first listening I was at once undone and tearfully, gracefully reassembled with an added dimension of satisfaction I had not known I was seeking, the missing piece with which sense is made of all that cannot be verbally explained among the jangling perplexities of our existance.
Thank you so much...
Thank you, dear Phil, for expressing with such delicacy the emotions pervading this haunting piece, as another 70 guitar devotee Phil (yes...) it feels good to know there's someone on the line... so let me co-sign this message of gratitude to Tommy - with love from Geneva Switzerland

Thank you, Philippe! How kind of you to respond with the understanding I was attempting to explain. Whenever I hear Tommy play I will think of you and despite the miles between us we will be together.
What a wonderful testimony you guys are to the power TE’s music 🙂
Tommy is the reason why I started playing guitar since 15. Now I'm 26 and never get tired of his music. But it's not just about his music. This man told me to be patient and enjoy every single moment that you have in life, just like he does with his songs. Thank you so much! You have that kind of energy we need on our planet.
One of the purist & greatest musician's in the world today.. For real there's no-one with such a mastery of craft as good as his - Well done Tommy you continue to inspire.. For immortal's like Chet & Steve Vai to say your the best they've seen is simply unfathomable..!
If we are ALL equal, Why can’t I?
Gosh, there's not one note in this entire song that I didn't love. Beautiful!
This is the song that made me discover Tommy's music. What a beautiful composition. Not easy to play either!
Tommy just makes it look easy!
Same here! This song has something magic
Same for me, I agree !
Tommy plays so clean & clear on some really tough chords. He makes an instrument & song come to life. I have been playing guitar since 7 yrs old he is the best. He has conquered the guitar.💯👍
I have small hands but can still play this with a few small compromises
Tommy changed my (and so many others) life.
Some day I will play like Tommy 🙏
Just absolutely beautiful, there really are no words to describe what he can do on that guitar.
the quality of recordings from even just five years ago has dramatically improved...this sounds like gold!!!!
I was thinking that too...this is the best I've ever heard (using Sennheiser HD-800s)
The slow down at 4:15 is like tasting your favorite dessert
Those who wait on the lord shall mount on wings like eagles , run and not grow weary . ( Isaiah 40)
всю душу вклав!!!Дякую Томмі!
Love the variations in rhythm throughout the song, could only come with the utmost familiarity of playing this tune thousands of times!
He started playing guitar and drums at the age of 4 and became a professional that toured australia at the age of 6.
Bless you, Tommy. Your music is a gift beyond measure.
Tommy channeling Hedges. And beautifully.
Masterpiece. The subtle intricate nuances.
с каждым годом всё лучше и лучше!
Genius Tommy!
Straight From the Brain!! To Fingers!! WOW?!!
Correction: heart 😊
The layers of emotions you evoke with this brilliant piece of art are complexingly beautiful. Thank you for the heartfelt performance.
Been a fan for close to 20 years and this is still by far and away one of your most beautiful pieces of music.
He is the bestest!
I love this guy he is the very best I've ever seen pick a flat top
Those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall not run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.
This verse suits the music
Praise the Lord!
Absolutely beautiful. This shows how good you can become when you've been on the road since you were six years old. Not much hope for the rest of us then !.
i wish i could like this more than once
I've never heard feel like it. Absolutely breathtakingly glorious. You just cannot fault any of the notes, chords, melodies. Just an absolute master of his trade.
The greatest guitar player that ever lived! I used to say the greatest guitar player alive... I hope he and I live long enough for him to make it back to Cincinnati; fingers crossed.
the legend continues.. will always be my favorite acoustic guitar of all time, the great teacher of all millennial acoustic players
I wonder if the nay sayers/critics could do better! Anyone who can make playing the guitar look so effortless and sound like Tommy does is worth full respect in my book!
Tommy, please never work as a Carpenter and save all your fingers, what a gift you have 😊
There is always a hope to be good again...
This is.. jaw-dropping. I’m an amateur guitarist and singer and I always felt not having a singing voice in a song was likely to compromise the emotions and depth of a song. I stand corrected. It’s clearly about the level of skill and passion.
Gorgeous song and rendition! Supreme!
Just wish it was on a Martin dreadnought. Amen.
not only the technique but also from the heart!
