Too many to remember... But my experiences in the shipping industry are a large part of why I'm an advocate for UBI now. It's so easy to see how basically all of those jobs can be automated, and that's just one industry. Any significant level of automation across all industries will make some form of UBI inevitable. The more we resist, the worse the transition will be... and not to be dramatic, but the cost will be paid in lives.
Every time people fret about "jobs disappearing," I just think they're worrying about the wrong thing. Anything a machine can do better should be done by a machine. Automate all of the "Bullshit Jobs." Give people enough money to survive, and they will have a chance to discover/create more meaningful Occupations.
Or they will just... survive. That will be enough for some people, and _that is fine._ Survival shouldn't depend on your ability or willingness to perform a Bullshit Job and pretend you care about it. People who want more than bare survival will have to work, and jobs that still require people will have to pay for more than bare survival. What a freaking concept.

I was a Kitchen Porter one summer in Scotland. I am from central Europe, and it was my first time in the West, I thought it's gonna be fun... but meh, it was hard. Washing plates and huge pots, and running in the kitchen with cuts that never actually heal because I still got new ones from washing the dishes (and my hands were still wet, making the cuts even worse). Sometimes, there is a steak knife forgotten among the plates... I am always eternally grateful when I get food and I don't criticize anyone because the job is so hard. The hardest part was the social aspect: Being treated like a white Slavic slave from a "poor country" (except for people who went to Prague and said that it was a really beautiful city), seeing the whole drama of employees in the hotel having their crazy soap opera borderline relationships, one of them a veteran chef from Afghanistan with PTSD and Tourette syndrome... There were so many horrifying and fascinating things about being there. I later practically burned out from this experience. I did more jobs there also like night portering, housekeeping, and even some cooking which I enjoy, but I was not quick enough back then. Three months there felt like 2 years of regular life and school. The first month was sometimes entertaining and fun, but the two remaining months were boring, full of misery and hard physical labor, but I will never forget the crazy people and experiences I had there (I would need to describe in detail some of the most interesting experiences, let me know if you are interested).
I also worked in a small business of some pâté makers here at home, which only from the description sounds like a terrible job - cleaning machines from the remains of dead animals... but contrary to the expectations it was great! The owners were amazing, one of them used to be a teacher of mathematics and they thought out every part of the process of cooking. When people use their imagination and intellectual skills, many jobs can become amazing experiences even though they may seem strange from the outside.
I agree that a lot of jobs need to be automated, there are so many unnecessary painful and stressful jobs... not everyone has the mental resources to make chores fascinating to do.

Not the topic of the question but, in my opinion, a job is just as worse as the people who manage you.
What I mean is that, the hours can be harsh, but you can love the work you do because your bosses are cool.
You can also hate your job because the people don't care about you.
To come back on the topic, my worst job was in the fast food industry. I was locked in the freezer because the manager was careless and did not hear me tell her that I was inside.
I did not remain long in it but as soon as one of my colleague came out to pick some things up in the freezer, she found me there, brought me up, and this very same manager yelled at me for "deserting the job" and wanted me to not be warmed up but instead to go back to work.
      I quit on the spot.
Remember that you're all better than a manager or supervisor tell you you are.
Trial periods are as just for you to decide if you want the job as it is for them to see if you fit.

Man this video struck something with me. It had me thinking about 2 jobs I look back on in a negative light. Amazon warehouse and forklift operator for a logistics company. I'll focus on amazon cause that place has given me so many stories in the 2 years I worked there that I could write short stories about them.
Amazon warehouses are one of those places that really prepare you for some of the more depressing things that can happen with a lot of jobs cause so many different bad things can happen. I remember getting hurt and being unable to breath deeply and being told to just work it off by a supervisor while I wait for my supervisor to get back from lunch. This lead to a doctor telling me to go on light duty and physical therapy. This lead to me gaining an "ambassador" position which means we stay in the field and make sure routes run smooth and send help when needed. Managers and supervisors tried to have the people training me to throw me under the bus saying I wasn't doing good when I was and so one. Turned out I was really good at it and this upset some of the managers and supervisors which lead to them to threaten taking me off light duty and remove me from my position and I unfortunately complied cause this was seasonal turned part time work and it didn't seem I would be able to fight something like this. After that I kept the status but was sent on the hardest routes anyway with no assistance as a form of punishment. This happened until me and a bunch of other people were forced to quit cause it was either that or be put to full time and sent to a warehouse way out of where we are comfortable driving to.
That job is pretty much why I dislike a game Death Stranding so much cause all this happened during the pandemic and the "Your rebuilding america" language that game used reminded me so much of all that "yall are heroes" talk everyone was hearing during the rise of the pandemic. We even had posters of comic book style artwork of amazon workers all throughout the walls. The job really wasnt worth it cause now I'm 29 with back issues.
Didn't expect this to go so long but like I said the video struck something in me. Keep up the good work.

I do find it bizarre, I tend to enjoy a lot of grindy games; but I don't enjoy meaningless work. It seems like a contradiction, because the payouts of gaming are worse than that of working. When you work you get money but when you game, you basically lose time, and money because of the electricity you are using.. However, I have tried not gaming to see if I would use my spare time to accomplish something, but all it did was make me depressed. Life felt more pointless.. After a few months build a pc again and got back to gaming but in the back of my mind I can't help but think that I am just wasting my time.

We are creatures born for leisure, not work. Work is a construct that society built and hooked us up to to make us subservient for our base necessities. Here in America, it's especially so. It takes a lot of work, but we shouldn't feel guilty about having fun and enjoying ourselves. We shouldn't have to work and be "productive", whatever that measurement is, just to feel like we have meaning or are contributing to a greater whole, as if we need to.

Absolutely understand that feeling. I fell into a rut after a disability reared it's ugly head years back and changed my life plans. We need play just to survive sometimes.
However, enrichment isn't just a physical experience, but a mental one as well, and play is a unique outlet for mental enrichment. It is just as necessary a part of life as any physical or "traditional" self improvement and often leads to thoughts that can be brought into your "real" life. As with most things though, moderation is key. If it's consuming your life, cut back. If it loses it's luster or isn't enjoyable, change things up. If there's a need gnawing at you that isn't being met, seek it out. These are all things that play teaches. Surviving the mundanity and hardship of life basically requires the fantasy of play, albeit, with moderation.
Also, if it's grindy games that push your buttons, you may simply be looking for systems to understand and bend to your benefit. Or it may be as simple as Skinner boxes being surprisingly effective tools for simulating achievement. If that's the case, find the one's that make you really think and push your analytical skills to the limits and the time will feel less wasted as you're developing IRL skillsets that will serve you throughout life.

Watching your interview with your old manager is like a classic list of all the things that people tell themselves to excuse their own behavior. "Oh, your situation is terrible? It must have been the product of your own decisions and thus your own fault." As if people in terrible positions only got there through bad decisions. He might have been sympathetic, but he appears to have bought into the sociopathic company behavior to a fair degree.
Another clue is the "forever job", as if such a thing can even exist for most people. The majority of work that needs done in the world is shit work. Very few people want to be in an office shoveling paper around. Very few people want to dig ditches, or stand around pointing people to the toilet paper aisle.

Some people are more susceptible to it than others due to all kinds of life circumstances that make one insecure and dependent on the "results" of their work, but we're all one isolating tragedy away from accepting some warped vision of reality where getting a cookie for throwing people into a meat grinder is something you can make a life on. This is how it's designed to work.

Hot gameplay tip for quantities of computers, crates, etc that are close together: tether them in a chain to one another before “plucking” them. They’ll pop themselves off, and you can shoot just the heaviest one towards the barge. Saves time turning from ship to barge and back again. Pop-pop-pop, shoot. Works especially well in cargo bays and cabins with an open wall.

Good luck out there. Never settle for less than you deserve, and aim higher than anyone thinks you can achieve. I did retail for about 3 years and realized I wasn’t getting anywhere. I would rather die than live like a wage slave, so I left, went to a community college for a quickest certification I could find in a job I could tolerate, debt be damned. It’s easier said than done, I’m lucky to have decent grades and a reliable co-signer for my student loan, but *if* you can make moves to get up in the world, you can slingshot right past other barriers. I went from 12.50 an hour part time, to 9 months in school, to 21.00 an hour full time. Was able to afford an apartment, save up, and will be going back to school for only 2 years to get a job that ranges in the six-figures. Again, debt be damned.
I’m not saying this to brag, more so to point out how arbitrarily prohibitive these advancements can be to make. Employers will sell you LIES that you can move up in the company, become management, district, regional managers, and start a “career” in these companies, but it is FALSE. These people get in through nepotism, networking, and brute force, which is why they are all manipulative psychopaths. You need to get OUT of places like that, find certificates that you’d be surprised only take a few weeks or months of school for: phlebotomy, dental assisting, nurse assisting, things like welding, HVAC technicians, automotive mechanics, and truck drivers can take just around 6 months to be certified and start making two or three times what you used to, with not only job security but actual leverage to argue higher wages, as many of these positions are lacking in trained workers. And, you don’t have to settle. I went from 21.00 an hour to 24.00 an hour in just one week by simply leaving the job that wouldn’t give me a raise, and reporting my new job experience in my resume. I got an offer in one day because my position is starved in my area. It’s scary to make big leaps like that, and that’s mostly because society tells you that you’re “supposed to climb the ladder,” rung by rung, from janitor, to cashier, to customer service, to manager, etc. this is a lie. Aim higher than they say you deserve. Do not underestimate your skill and ability to learn. Remember that employers need YOU; YOU do not need an employer, a job, or money. At worst, you can live on the street, but a company without workers WILL die, and that fear is what drives them to pay you.
I hope this motivational ramble drives you to aim high. Never settle. Look into “moderate-skilled” labor like I described, and use it as a jumping off point into what you are really passionate about. That’s how you find the five-or-ten-year “goals” that people talk about. Five or ten years at an entry level position gets you nowhere. Start looking for where you can off that train, maybe not to get your dream job, but at least to something stable, dignified, and more than just tolerable.

This was definitely one of my favorite reviews!! As someone who works at a call center (that ironically pays way more that any job from my journalism career) I definitely understand that feeling of stuck ambitions, I would rather be a novelist and screenwriter instead of picking up calls from angry and confused customers, there’s so many things I would rather do but this is the only job that pays my bills for the moment and I feel that if I don’t keep myself focused on my goals I’m gonna end up in a “forever job” venting my frustrations with my co workers, it really sucks that there are certain jobs that only the privileged can get access to, and if really sucks that this Jobs (the entry level jobs, the ones that keep businesses afloat and in operations) are the least valued socially and economically speaking. As a person who works mostly as a freelancer and had long periods of being „my own boss” - I must say that I sometimes envy the more stable nature of 9-5 gigs.
I also know that this sort of a gig is bound to be really soul crushing after a few years in, if not months. Because of that the likelihood of me searching for that sort of jobs is pretty damn low, but there might be a day where I’ll have to cave in and accept an offer like that.
I don’t know how I feel about the part talking about the importance of “personal choices” in terms of how your career progresses(mostly because I’m well aware that 90 percent of succeeding in pursuing your dream career - is down to luck and contacts you have/made along the way + the socioeconomic “caste” you initially emerged from) - but I think I do get where that part of the video was coming from.

Still me and a friend became "shipbreakers" in Space Engineers, to the point that we were called "Elite Scrappers" for a lot of the same skills you see here.
From capturing enemy ships, disabling their controls, taking them home, learning where to cut to move those pieces into the "Grinding room" (Yes, we grind down whole sections, by having a chamber with a piston to push wreckage into grinders) and it was great fun.
But we were our own bosses, and what we got out of the salvaging was both the fun of the job, but also all the spoils of it (Ship materials to build and get what we wanted)
Cutting and carving up these behemoths if you have the freedom to decide where and it reacts accordingly is a lot of fun, but I guess I just found the better "job" than what this game offered :D

Nick, this one was fantastic. I've been a fan of yours for a few years. I'll watch pretty much anything you put out. I don't know anything about this game, and truthfully it doesn't look like anything I'd find appealing. Your zeal hooked me immediately and I thought I'd give it a shot. If it sucked I'd just rewatch your Deus Ex vids for a palate cleanser. I didn't expect the real life emotions. I had to really process this before commenting.
You brought out so much from this Cutter's perspective. As humbled as I am to have my contribution mentioned in you review, you put even more lenses on this seemingly simple "go here, do this" game. I didn't realize how deep it could be, and whether you meant to invoke one or not I found myself in a mild existential crisis about my own working experiences. What's the goal of my work? Who will miss me when I'm inevitably gone? Can I break free or do I owe my soul to the company store?
The "deck stacked against you" motif rings out over and over in Hardspace, and in my quick dismissal of it I missed a fair bit of the nuances. You're making money, but you owe money. Far beyond Fry's "You gotta spend money to make money" remark in Futurerama, this reminds me of how every year we get a 2-3% cost of living adjustment, then insurance goes up by %1.25 or so, almost nullifying an already paltry "raise." I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel envious when the Cutter "finishes" work and gets to own his future, deciding what to do next. Will I get to that point? Will I get to spray paint "I am not [REDACTED] property" on my office desk and set off for the vast vacuous unknown? Your personal situation brought out at the ending was poignant. The "Good Luck Nick" cake on its own was a mixture emotions!
On lighter notes, I love the Pop Up Video bits of your mug explaining or elaborating. Can we expect more of those? And the outro tips of your own experience was a nice touch. That wipe at 01:26:20 is the most high-tech thing ever, you're becoming quite the technical editor.

I think I will go pick up a copy of this, but one thing really gets me from everything I hear about this. Everyone that talks about the job side of this game has either a retail, or art, or journalism background and seem really masochistically into just how bad their job is/was. I get that the trades don't play games too much outside of the germans and forklift simulator. But being a journeyman in heavy industry there's a kind of zen that happens when you get busy with what you're working on. And on big projects, things happen slowly, so compressing an entire workday into just 15minutes really makes sense.

If the inside of ship is pressurized then that would lead to expansion of the inner hull. If you place the reactors and some sensitive navigational tools on the outer hull, it may be dangerous to have the inner hull expanding into and touching, chafing, or damaging the tools in the outer hull. So this could explain why the outer hull is pressurized to mitigate this kind of issue.

Hey NTH a small tip, you can use buttons to use hands in this game, dont remember but it was like z and x i think? And you can either pull yourself through the insides of the ships without thrusters, stabilize yourself to spinning ship so you dont cut bad because it rolled away, or to cushion yourself against incoming impact if you pull yourself too hard against something, or something flies at you after explosion for example 😂

    • @NthReview

Thought on “why mouse and keyboard?”: the NES released at the beginning of my second year of grad school, so I missed the entire console genre. I’ve never used a controller for anything…except a couple of hours learning just how useless I was ever going to be with them. Yeah, six degrees-of-freedom on a keyboard is sub-optimal, but who has time to learn new muscle memory?

    • @NthReview
      @NthReview  Рік тому

As a PC gamer since 1996 who had a joystick on his desk back then, the advantage of playing with the right controller is much greater than the time lost learning it and building that muscle memory. So many games are finding parity across all platforms so it's very advantageous to use a controller over KB/M. I've had an Xbox controller hooked up to my controller for years.

@@NthReview You literally spent several minutes ranting about how easy it is to fire someone. How 'bad' this is, and how there must be some way to make it harder.
I point out that in japan they have this system and it out right sucks. you're not fired unless you do something horrendously wrong. corporations are even more of a hive of bureaucracy as each middling manager has little to do, yet can't be removed. And a LARGE youth population exists there who want to work, but literally can't because the jobs are filled with people companies can't get rid of for someone better or new blood. So they have to wait till the person literally 'dies'.
So nice gas-lighting. though to be fair, i do share some blame. I ignored the giant red flag that you know little of economics when you called the game a 'end stage capitalism sim.' My job invites terrible moments on the regular. Working with at-risk kids can be risky and dangerous, depending on the population - I've been bitten, kicked, punched, spit on, had things thrown at me. I've been stuck on the side of a county road after dark in rural Colorado with a 14-year-old girl who decided to walk 60 miles home rather than sit where asked in our van. If that wasn't enough, this kind of work "is its own reward," meaning "we're going to take advantage of well-intended people who will work for peanuts." It's for the birds, but unfortunately, they are right - I will work for peanuts, because I do want to help people rather than work to make someone rich.
