I did try a recipe once that replaced half the shortening with butter, and those suckers stayed soft, uncovered, for hours. Love all your videos. May the haters and unskilled remain silent just once.
As someone who was never taught to cook from scratch, you give me the courage to try. Thank you for walking and talking through the steps and making it simple (and not making some of us feel dumb for not knowing) 💚
My sweet grandmother who lived on a big farm in Greene County, Tennessee would bake biscuits nearly every day for the farmhands when they would come in for dinner. I miss her. ❤️
Patara you are such a no nonsense joy to watch. I’m just starting to prepare biscuits and purchase the cutter. I never knew not to do the twist and shout. Thanks for the knowledge!
Once I learned the tricks of using the sifter and folding over once, my biscuits have consistently come out great. My hubby loves my biscuits now. 🥰 And I love making them now! 😁
my kids used to get little ice cream sundaes in a plastic handled cup, decorated with an animal. I use the zebra one I have left for cutting biscuits. The plastic is thin & sharp - & Patara is right "Don't do the twist & shout". Tried to tell people this but they always turn the cutter. ruins 'em.
Tried this recipe today while one of my toddlers sat at the table and the other was napping - it was so easy and quick. We all enjoyed a warm biscuit with butter and local honey! I will be writing this down and making this many more times!
This Chicago girl just made these! Used my 10 inch Lodge cast iron. Oh my goodness! Delish! I cook from scratch at least 27 days a month. A bread /biscuit baker I am not. Now I am! My 92 year old Dad who always had homemade bread during the depression gave 2 thumbs up! Thank you Patera!
In the UK we call, what you have baked, scones. We also add sugar to the mix and serve with clotted cream and jam (jelly). You can also make scones by adding sultanas, glazed cherries, cinnamon, white chocolate and raspberries, blueberries, the list goes on, into the mix. You don't know what you're missing. Biscuits are what you call cookies.
It’s so hot here I can’t use my oven , I got my grill going and did this ! It worked great! Just used my cast iron skillet on the upper rack 😁 these were delicious thank you
Patara!!!!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you for this video. Over the years I have tried making biscuits at different times but they never turned out. They didn’t rise and were like hockey pucks. I eventually gave up. I watched your video for the second time , yesterday. I decided we were going to have sausage gravy and biscuits for lunch as I slept in and couldn’t make for breakfast. I just could not believe it Patara. I actually was able to make biscuits.!! I am so happy the sausage gravy turned out so good and that is only the 2nd time I tried. Oh we had eggs with it too. I can’t thank you enough. What a wonderful late breakfast we had today. I can’t wait to make biscuits again!! Thank you for giving me the confidence to try again. Love ya🥰❤️
Super biscuits! I love kneading dough. But ladies, don't beat it up, no tough love, just hugs. Long ago when I started making bread, I beat up that dough and it just makes things tough. You want puffy , flaky, see how gentle Patara kneads dough? Anywho, I love this with a bowl of soup in winter and yep, great as a summer sandwich with tomatoes and mayo. Enjoy and thanks Patara!
My mother in love and I LOVE you and your channel. We look for your vids everyday!! She made your coalmine chocolate cake last night and it's so delish! We have learned so much from you and we are putting tht knowledge to use. Stay blessed!!
Made some biscuit yesterday because I had a craving for a hot meal with them. I use butter, lard or even mayonnaise. Don't get bogged down in regimen, be flexible. Thank you for your SMILE. Blessings
Yes also watching from Australia. We call them scones here served with jam and cream or make them savoury with pumpkins, grated cheese, spinach or zucchini and served warm with butter on top.
My mama made the best biscuits. She kept a large covered bowel that she made her biscuits out of time after time. She didn’t clean it often 😳 She kept a sifter in it to clean out the old dough. She’d just plop some lard or crisco down into the the little hole that she would make, add some milk and get to working with her precious hands. Perfect biscuits every time! I loved the middle biscuit, so Daddy wouldn’t let anyone else have that one. We never got sick and most of the time that biscuit bowl was clean as a whistle (meaning just the cavern of flour was all perfect! Love your way of making them. I have not mastered my mama’s biscuit adventure! 😘
These are so similar to the biscuits my son-in-law and family in rural VA use. He taught me and we love them. His sister uses mayo but doesn't tell her brother or mother because they don't like mayo, hahahaha!! Those biscuits are awesome too.
So proud of you for passing along the knowledge of your elders. Put a smile on my face remembering the oatmeal cups that I drank out of daily growing up. Don't you just love that cast iron! I use the very same for my biscuits.. Have a blessed day y'all 💕
Good morning. So glad you finally got rain.Sorry to hear about the Possum. we have cucumbers!!! 1st time growing them and everything was started late ,unavoidable . I fell like a proud mama
My mamaw, when I was little, when we were at her house would make biscuit-bread. We would break off a piece and put her gravy on it, then, she always would have a mason jar with stewed tomatoes in it, we would take a spoonful or two and put that on top of our gravy and biscuits, OH MY GOODNESS!!! I LOVED IT!!! She was a good 'ol country cook.

Patara, what you call cookies, we in UK call biscuits. What you call biscuits we call scones and in Devon and Cornwall they get served up as English Cream Tea topped with jam(jelly) and clotted cream plus a pot of tea. Without the sugar I can see them being excellent with cream cheese and tomatoes.
Thank you for your videos. Thank GOD that you are finally getting the much needed rain. Those biscuits look amazing and super simple to make. GOD bless
Get your hands into it! Yes, Ma'am! One thing I learned recently (yes even oldies can still learn something) and have noticed it's very true: Using the same ingredients at the same measurements can and often does give different results with the dough being too dry or too wet. It's nothing anybody has done wrong. It just happens to be the humidity in the air. Low humidity turns out dry, high humidity (even boiling stuff on the stove) turns out wet. You have rain so, I'm betting the humidity is higher. As you said though, no sweat, add more flour or more liquid. Easy fix. OOO! The blue glass you have used to come in boxes of oatmeal! Keep on gettin' it girl! Love from a granny in SW Arkansas. P.S. Those biscuits would be so good with some chocolate gravy on 'em! Chocolate Gravy 1 C Sugar 4 Tbls cocoa 3 Tbls flour (or a little less) pinch of salt around 2 cups of milk Mix dry ingredients. We've only had 30 mins of rain since June 1st spread over two days here on the other side of our beautiful state! Same boat as ya'll! Rain all around us and blue skies above every day we've has a chance of rain. Been watering our garden, flower beds and animals like a chicken with it's head cut off. Trying to save what I can. We are in a severe heat wave over here. 110 heat index today. Praying for relief soon! I made your other biscuit recipe a couple weeks ago for the first time in years! went to kroger yesterday everything we needed price was up again small can biscuits was 1.59 so will start making again going to try this recipe xoxoxoxo same as my grannys
I love watching you get on your cooking, canning , and baking shoes and showing how it is done. I have learned so much from you. The little bit of cooking I learned from watching my mom again I say watching my mom. She didn't teach us girls. She canned and did jams/jellies but didn't teach us. So I have learned most from watching you here and a couple of other you tube channels. Reading the canning books isn't enough for me watching it being done brings the reading to life and understanding better. Thank you for all you do and talk about. GOD Bless you, your family , and your farm.
We finally got rain as well. All the storms had been going around us. However with the strong rain came lightening that took out 2 trees. Thankfully, when the trees fell it was into the only open area of our yard. That I am sure was God's hand of protection! I have my mom's old sifter and my grandma's old, red, metal can with 3 holes in the top to help the biscuits not get stuck inside the can. Thank you for not having a studio kitchen, you keep it real!
keeping it REAL. Rarely follow along with cooking videos (fake kitchens) but yours have changed my mind. Receipies just don't give you the tips you do, from a honest home cooking kitchen. Thank You!
My grandma used a metal glass that she had a collection of. They were sold with cottage cheese in them. I loved those glasses. Awesome on the farm, out in the fields no broken glasses.
Patara just had to say this too. One of our kids said that my biscuits are the only ones they want! Doesn't like any other kind. What a blessing for this to be said!! I am honored actually. Thanks Patera, it shows how we can whip up something that will feed the family with little ingredients. This is what we need right now, this gave me a boost of confidence. I can cook and can make basically anything, but I needed this reminder, of how a little bit of ingredients can make a satisfying meal.
Totally adore you, Patera & your videos. Thanks!! Mastered bread making 50 years ago but have always avoided biscuits. I appreciate your " just do it" attitude and simplicity to everything. I have a tendency to complicate things. Exact measurements, etc. You're so much fun & the best!
I have made biscuits for years in a cast Iron skillet. Never thought of preheating the skillet. They look awesome! I am gonna preheat my skillet next time. Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom! My momma grew up without a momma so she wasnt much of a cook. Had to read lots of books
