Speaking of..... has Mary seen that version? For me, it is the best version of that story (well, aside from the radio drama the terrified a good part of the country WAY back when)..... like "Excalibur" is the best telling of the King Arthur tale and "A Challenge for Robin Hood" is my favorite telling of THAT story.
While this movie does have impressive visual effects, I still prefer the original 1953 version for its storytelling and effects. Plus, there was a "sequel" television show that wasn't half bad, either.

Great reaction! Always love watching you! ❤ What will really blow your mind is that H.G. Wells wrote this original story between 1895-1897 and it was first published in 1898! The story was made into a Halloween radio broadcast and was narrated live by Orson Welles on Oct 30th, 1938. That radio broadcast caused panic by several listeners as they thought it was a "real" alien invasion! The story was also adapted into a 1953 movie by the same name, set in 1953 Southern California. Pretty cool back story! Stay Amazing Mary ❤🍒

I've always had a sneaky appreciation for this film for showing EXACTLY what fleeing an apocalypse with your family looks like. It's not all cutesy like the World War Z family, it's a lot of screaming and "SHUT UP LET ME THINK" and "I WANT TO SEE MOM" and confusion. It's stressful, but it's stressful in a way that's adding to the whole vibe.
Plus "Dakota screams the whole time" is simply an untrue observation from others. She is panicking for the initial car scene and when that's done, she only lets out a scream VERY appropriate moments, like a crowd swarming their car and smashing the windshield, turning around and being face to face with a tripod camera, etc.

H.G. Wells is the father of Science Fiction and many of his novels
    have been adapted to film.
War of The Worlds (1898) is the original Alien Invasion story.
No particular main characters of the novel.
You just see how many of them deal with this unforseen event.
First on audio, the 1938 radio play broadcast on Halloween narrated by Orson Wells threw the audience into a major panic like the invasion was real and it made headline news as an major spectacle.
Then on the big screen as an George Pal production with award winning effects in 1953, ahead of it's time in filmmaking followed by a syndicated tv series (1988-1990) that was an continuation from the film and pushed the envelope of Sci-fi/suspense/horror .
    This 2005 adaption is Spielberg's 3rd Sci-Fi film of the 2000s.
The fear and paranoia of a post 9/11 world reacting to an attack from beyond.
Cruise's role as not a hero, a father trying to measure up and at least guide his kids through this ordeal does make good storytelling.
The cast, the crew, the sets, the effects and every moment till the end
shows you why Spielberg is the legend he is.
Following his other efforts with Kubrick's final production, Artificial Intelligence (2001)
and his first collaboration with Cruise, Minority Report (2002).

I think the crew was also worried about the weight on the ferry. There were a lot of people, and regardless of the tripods coming or not, the ferry will sink if there is too much weight (see various tragedies in Asia for overloaded ferries). My question is always, why did they let people drive their cars on? Maybe the plan was to get people with cars across first, then come back for pedestrian traffic, but of course the tripods coming suddenly threw a wrench into that plan.

The location of Ray's house is in Bayonne, New Jersey, and the bridge is the Bayonne Bridge between Bayonne and Staten Island, New York. The elevated highway is NJ State Route 440. Many of the scenes are nods to earlier productions of War of the Worlds. Starting the movie in NJ is a nod to the Halloween night radio play done by Orson Wells in 1938. He began his version in a town called Grover's Mill, NJ. The energy shields for the War Machines was an addition from the 1953 version. The house scene was also based on the 1953 version. This was also very faithful to the original book written by H.G. Wells, and first published in 1898. One thing that all versions is that it happened at the time it was published/released.

IMO, 2005 gave the greatest one-two punch by Steven Spielberg. He did both this and MUNICH in the same year. Speaking of which, MUNICH is a must watch, and easily one of his best and most politically daring works (and a huge stylistic and tonal departure for him too).

Many years ago, my best friend's cousin was the general manager of a movie theater. She let us see movies for free whenever we wanted. We would go at least once a week for years, and this movie was one of the hundreds of movies I saw for free. Every major movie you can think of from the late 90s until maybe 2007, I probably saw it.
I specifically remember the night I saw this movie. The movie itself was entertaining, but what was more memorable was what happened when we left.
As soon as we stepped outside, the sky got super dark, and we started hearing thunder. As we began to drive, the sky began to light up with lightning. It was the worst lightning storm I ever saw in my entire life, with lightning streaking across the sky every few seconds the entire ride home. Even 20 years later, I've never seen anything like it.
It was just super eerie, but I was also worried about getting struck by lightning. It freaked me out quite a bit, but the storm eventually died down, and we got home safe. I'll never forget that night.

This story was written by H.G. Wells and they originally did a radio program about it as if it were actually happening in the time when there was ONLY radio and the people were really freaking out about it believing it was real. Then they did a film version in the 50's. Then they did the Tom Cruise one

I work in a steel mill and we use a lot of overhead high capacity cranes. They use horns and sirens to communicate to people on the floor and that’s what they’re doing with the tripods and the horns. They also show Tom Cruise as a crane operator It’s the beginning of the movie.

War of the World's was originally famous novel by HG Wells and was developed into a radio play. Developed and directed by Orson Welles. It was first broadcast in 1938 and caused some people to have major panics across the USA because some they thought it was real.
It was remade in black and white and watched that version multiple times as a kid. Its kind of amusing that people come to this movie not knowing anything of it because its got a huge place in popular culture (among us old farts anyway).
In 1978 a musical album was made of this, narrated by Richard Burton (the actor and multiple times husband of Elizabeth Taylor) and that album was HUGELY popular and is an event to listen to just by itself, especially the opening lines.

Somebody probably already said it but the movie ended the same way the novel, written in the late 1800s ended. I bet that narration was word for word. I haven't read war the worlds since the 1970s.
I believe you have seen independence Day. This is the same story as independence Day. Independence Day was a new take on it, But basically in independence day virus still took them out. They should have come to earth with Norton anti-virus.

I saw this in theaters with my Mom and brother. I almost had to leave. I am normally not rocked by scary movies, but this terrified me. The scene evaporating people, the foghorn sound of the aliens, the fact that they were so powerful and it’s not like a superhero movie where the heroes beat up the baddies. This was a true apocalypse movie. Everyone was a scared, dumb, panicky animal INCLUDING our protags. It still gets me. It is a real eye opener.

The ending is unique, but as a biologist, it actually is quite a reach. Viruses for example have a really hard time even jumping from species to species, let alone from terrestrial to extraterrestrial life. A virus for example wouldn't be able to even infect something that didn't use DNA and protein the way life on earth does. Bacteria that disrupt cellular functions with toxins etc, would have to be very fortuitous that they also work on however the aliens work. The only realistic situation in which something like a bacteria would be harmful to some form of extraterrestrial life would be if they somehow found a hospitable environment in the alien that killed them by just growing out of control, crowding out the host tissue, somehow disrupting its function (similar to the green eye goo from the expanse season 4). Its a unique ending, but a little bit of a reach, because that hospitable environment would likely have some sort of food for the bacteria for it to be hospitable, which likely wouldn't exist in the alien.

Mary, you should check out Jeff Wayne's musical version of The War Of The Worlds which was released on vinyl in 1978. It's a great album with a mix of progressive rock, orchestral music and gripping narration. For a very long time, it was the closest adaptation of H.G Well's original book. I highly recommend listening to the original version that was narrated by Richard Burton. Years later, Jeff Wayne released a more modernised version with Liam Neeson narrating (which I think is inferior.) Mind you, Liam Neeson is a great actor of course but the original version of the album is far superior.
