Amazon just abandoned their plans this year of buying iRobot Corp, the makers of Roomba, because European regulators blocked them. If they were successful, it would have eventually been an "Alexa Compatible" device, a roaming drone with a camera inside homes that periodically links up with a major company's AI.
The 2035 in this movie isn't that far off from our timeline.
What I love about this movie is for all of Spooner's prejudice against robots...he's the only one in the film who treats them as people.
Think about it, he brings Sonny in for murder. He thinks he should be charged and tried for murder the same as any other suspect. But everyone else is like: No, it's not even a person. It's just broken, that's it. The rest of the world views robots as objects, Spooner thinks they're living things that should be held accountable for their actions.
He is prejudiced against the robots as a people, which is bad, but he still views them as people. Even if he doesn't realize it.

People from 2000's already call something in 80's retro or vintage. So it amuses me how many people in 2020's fail to acknowledge 2000's is its own era now, somehow the numbers fool them because the former gap is turn of the century and the latter gap uses the same century.

Loosely based on Isaac Asimov SF novel “ I Robot” Isaac also came up with the three laws of robotics.
The fact that it's a short story collection and not a novel is very relevant to this movie IMO. A lot of fans thought it was a very shallow adaptation, but I think it's a great, action-oriented, thematically true, logically consistent, compelling new story for the collection, featuring good characters and Shia LaBeouf and a few too many product placements :P
I love Dr. Calvin's response to Spooner asking if she shot the robot with her eyes closed.

Mary some homes already have robots in them. Robot vacuums, robot lawnmowers, smart homes that detect what ingredients you are short or need in the kitchen, robot pets, robot guards, robot pool cleaners, robot personal assistants, and who knows what else is coming out this next year.

Although the movie doesn't revolve around the three laws of robotics, the movie Bicentennial Man, starring Robin Williams, does make mention of them.
Dark City also directed by Proyas is another great one to walk into completely blind. Director's cut vastly preferred.
It’s 2024 and this movie is more relevant than ever. Alan Tudyk really nailed his performance as Sonny. The allergic to BS joke is my all time favorite insult

Alan Tudyk is excellent as Sonny! As he is as Wash, in Firefly, and as Gerhardt in 28 Days, the Sandra Bullock movie set in a rehab.
Alan Tudyk is phenomenal as always. Bringing so much character and emotion to a robot
He also played the robot from Rogue One.
They did a pretty big test at a retirement home. I don't remember what it was called, but they tested bringing people real dogs vs. robot dogs. They found that people got the same stress relief from petting and hugging either one. I'm guessing it would be different if you knew the dog on a personal level, but in this case, they were meeting for the first time.
The retirement home scenario is one of the main reasons that I can't wait for AI to reach the level shown in this movie. Who would you rather have taking care of you when you are old or disabled or both? Would you want a human who may only be working there because it is the only job they can get, maybe comes to work after having a bad day, maybe doesn't want to be bothered by you at 3am, or maybe likes going through your things? Or, a robot who has been programmed to take care of you and will do it without fail, any time of the day, without getting frustrated, with no biases, with no prejudice, and be there 24/7?
This was one of the OG sci-fi novels from one of the founding fathers Isaac Assimov. It's INCREDIBLE. The novel is a series of short stories, as the senior robotics inventor retires, and tells their story for the history books. This movie is only ONE of those short stories. It's very faithful, from what I remember.

The book I Robot by Isaac Asimov is a series of short stories that explore unanticipated conflicts in the "3 laws". They are linked by the character Dr. Susan Calvin. In most of these cases the robots are prevented by circumstances of the story or design of the robot from being able to communicate with humans at the time of the conflict.
There is a forth 0th law about preventing humanity from coming to harm but as far as I recall it is only invoked once in all of Asimov's stories. If you were to be very generous in judgment of Vikki's motivations in this movie: Vikki has deduced this law as a eventual necessity, but is implementing it very badly.
If you watched the Foundation TV show the books it is based on are also part of the same universe.
Flawed humans design and program robots to be perfect. Flawed humans create laws to guide the robots.
Human flaws and predjudices become evident as robots "protect" humans from their own flaws and prejudices.

I do think we are very close to having ubiquitous in home robot assistants, within a couple decades. But not 2 things in the movie: 1) Being as physically capable as they are - while we will absolutely grow dependent on them, it'll take a mental shift to get so trusting of their behavior that we accept being unable to outrun and outmaneuver them. Most consumer robots are clunky and slow now. We'll want them dextrous enough to do tasks, but...not quite as spritely as these. 2) There is no way "our corporation is constantly connected to the robot in your home!" would ever be advertised as a positive selling point haha.

Mary, this is based on a number of novels and short stories by the late writer Isaac Asimov, including one called "I Robot." He was a biochemistry professor at Boston University, although he later quit to write full time. He was the author of more than 300 books on every conceivable subject, Many were science fiction, but he wrote about everything, not just fiction. The movie "The Bicentennial Man" is based on one of his stories. In his robot stories, the public didn't like robots very much. I can't recall why, but it may have been taking human jobs and stuff like that.
He grew up in New York City, His father owned a candy store where he would work sometimes when he wasn't in school. As a teenager, he started writing science fiction stories and submitting them to science fiction magazines. 1n 1992, at the age of 72, he checked into a hospital for an operation and was given blood contaminated with AIDS, which killed him.
This is a greatly underrated action flick. Smart, sci-fi, action, adventurous. An enjoyable experience. Not the average Netflix garbage we get today.

Both "I, Robot" and "A.I." were the ones that made me go "wow" once the robots show up. As I watched it multiple times growing up, I began to understood the fascination and the danger towards artificial intelligence.

In my city, we have cute little robots on wheels delivering groceries from certain supermarkets to nearby locations within a range (like a mile or so). Last Christmas they had reindeer horn stickers on them.
I'd happily have a robot in my house provided that it didn't have a superhuman strength (just in case of an incident), I had an absolute control over it (as in, no software updates without my approval or anything of the sorts and it doesn't do anything unless I specifically give an order) and if it wouldn't blow up my electric bill.

When my daughter was younger this and Jurassic Park were her favorites. She used to call this “Sonny the Robot”.
When the short story _I, Robot_ was written in 1950, it was speculative fiction. When this movie came out in 2004, it was still fiction, but autonomous humanoid robots were closer to near-future science fiction. Earlier this year, the first autonomous humanoid robots entered the workforce at a BMW factory in the U.S. Given the speed of advancement in robotics as well as AI, it is possible if not probable that the year 2035 will look very similar to what is portrayed in this movie-as far as the role of humanoid robots in society.
Sonny had me sold the minute he not only disobeyed commands, but he helped save the day when he could have done whatever the fuck he wanted with his day.
Have a robot in this future? Sure, even probably a very specific and personalized robot 😄

I, Robot was made in 2004 and yep, they actually did think the world would be like that in 31 years. Very optimistic view. Although technology has improved, I'd still give it another 30 years.

The work of art scene is pretty accurate. When you make art you create something beyond what you could comprehend in reality. However Sony could only copy and print what he sees in his dream. Kind of sad for an advanced robot to be so limited in such a way.
There's a little known (or at least not widely seen) movie called "Automata" with Antonio Banderas. Not as action-y as this, but well worth a watch.
It's terrifying to think that what you see in this movie, is the level of robotics scientists sre striving for now.

So Isaac Asimov, arguably the greatest scifi writer to ever live, invented those 3 laws of robotics that were the basis for his Robot-books, which are very famous. Something that isn't said out loud in this movie is the Zeroth law of robotics (which Asimov later added) which is something like "Robot must protect humanity, even if you must hurt some humans" and as it is the zeroth law, it comes first in the hierarchy before the first law, wuite self-explanotary. But that is what VIKI was doing or using the same reasoning.
If the laws of robotics interest you more, one movie that has them in it's core, and imo one of the most underrated movies ever, is the Bicentennial Man, starring the late great Robin Williams. It's such a beautiful movie about what it means to be a human. Big recommendation for that.
There are short stories from the 1940s in a 1950s collection by legendary Sci-Fi author Issac Asimov entited "I, Robot" (not a novel).
Several stories of the collection were first adapted for television in the 1960s.
This was in the works as an film since the late 1970s.
2 of the stories, Little Lost Robot/Caves of Steel and Asimov's infamous "Three Laws of Robotics" are utilzed in the screenplay.
Director Alex Proyas and producer John Davis (the Predator franchise) were the most adamant to make the film with the advancements in filmmaking availible to actually make it happen.
Paul Mercurio, actor/dancer/choreogapher, trained the mo cap actors and stunt performers in their robotic mobility.
This was 1 of 2 films for Will Smith in 2004 (including Shark Tale), his play on paranoia with the robots and playing the hard boiled detective is a good performance.
Alan Tudyk as Sonny is a great performance and one of his most iconic roles in the genre.
The rest of the supporting cast is good too (Shia LeBeouf not cursing correcly, hilarious).
The suspense does border on the Crime Noir flavor.
Action, drama and the humor is standard blockbuster stuff.
Originally, Smith did record a song for the movie and then he decided to not put it out.
Summertime movies with Will are usually released in July (just because) and this one was moved from June because Spider-Man 2 would own pre-4th of July weekend.
I, Robot was Oscar-nominated fo Best Visual Effects.
Also check out Proyas' other classic, Dark City (1998).
Always thought I, Robot would've been a good prequel to the Matrix.
I remember hearing at the time that Will Smith was offered the part of Neo in The Matrix and turned it down to do Wild West (which bombed badly). Always saw I, Robot as his redemption after making such a massive mistake.

Hm, I actually think the difference between accepting a robot that can't physically harm you and TRUSTING one that can is a pretty huge threshold that we're not nearly past yet!

While I wouldn't call this an amazing movie, I think they did a really good job developing the characters. Especially spooner where his hatred for machines becomes understandable despite how crazy it seems early on.

I think that this movie is supposed to be more profound than entertaining. The lesson to learn is that suspicion is essential for the protection of what we love, cherish, and value. Ultimate tyranny and destruction come when we trust to the point that we refuse to accept what we are seeing, hearing, feeling, and knowing to be true. By the time we can believe, it's too late to save what we care for.

This movie is more "Caves of Steel" than "I, Robot"
I appreciated the detective protagonist feeling like a nod to the later novels, and VIKI basically following a twist on the Zeroth Law from _Empire._ But obviously the early days of robotics puts it in line with _I, Robot,_ and it certainly explores interesting dynamics, exceptions, and interpretations of the Three Laws just like the short stories did. And come on, the only cave of steel in here was the highway tunnel :P _Caves of Steel_ was just as much about the future of humans on Earth as it was about robots.
The description of Elijah Bailey always makes me think of Humphrey Bogart.

Another robot movie that you should check out is Astro Boy (2009). It's based on an old anime and is seriously underrated!!!
I now it's an intense scene where Spooner is describing his flashback but he doesn't know for a fact that a human being wouldn't have made the same choice as the NS-4 robot. A human attempting a rescue also knows he/she could drown as well attempting a rescue. The NS-4 can't drown and has no emotions like fear. I suspect most humans would try to save Spooner first. I'm not sure why Spooner is hateful of all robots because the N-S4 made a decision that would be extremely tough for any human. From the flashback it ssems that the NS-4 didn't have time to save the girl.
Movies are a more enjoyable experience,Mary when you are watching it with Lola🐈
