Yes, but it is important to remember more points when choosing: Durability and construction quality, support for drivers (for how long the brand will keep drivers for an old model), quality of drivers and software for the unit, and general support.

  • @Tallstreehouse

I'm rocking an Evo 16 😂. Works great tho, and that SSL ain't half bad either. My drum recording secret is to use an Omni somewhere under the snare, typically pointed at the kick drum. Flip the phase, throw a high pass on it, and you get the snare wire as well as beater definition-even some pleasant tom/cymbal bleed. Works really well in most situations, especially since I've never really been able to get a great traditional kick-in or snare bottom mic sound.
What I like in particular is that you can boost the low mids and get good punch without it getting too wooooby, due to the mic having a good bit of space from each drum element.
Just thought I'd share for those who may have input limitations. Great video!

In the odd transitional era of the early 2000s, some audio brands introduced interfaces and preamps with inserts before A/D conversion-a feature way ahead of its time. Then, poof-gone.
Now, the industry has circled back, embracing hybrid workflows and analog integration like it’s brand new. Funny how everything old becomes new again.

I didn't know the track but recognise the style. I listened to your remake and loved the sound of each instrument and what a singer! I then listened to the original track on UA-cam. The first thing that hit me witht the original was a predominance of mid frequencies to the mix, an accentuation of 300-850hz across the mix. Also noticeable was a lot of compression especially on electric guitars and what seemed more reverb, making a kind of sheen across the parts. This gave it a kind of glue and a vibe that was missing from your mix. I wonder if the vibe would have been different if you had learned and rehearsed the song as a band and recorded it as such? There is of course the fact that you only know this song from hearing it. When you write a song, as the song is 'born' there is often an excitement in hearing the song for the first time, especially when you record it, hence many studio recordings never better the initial demo. It would be interesting to know the history of the original recording because there is definitely a vibe that is hard to put your finger on, that makes it so engaging to the listener. Great idea BTW and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole film.

    • @itsstudiotime

Yeah I was blown away that there is an 8 banger box that says "SSL" on the front of it that doesn't cost north of 2 grand. Sounds really great! There really isn't a massive difference between quality boxes anymore in terms of audio quality, it's really more about which software you prefer. I had the MOTU 828es (very similar to this box) and while it sounded great, didn't love the matrix system they used, so I ended up getting an RME unit. Sound-wise they were totally indistinguishable. I think really the only thing that is going to differentiate different interfaces going forward is the addition of room correction software being built in, rather than having to get Sonarworks or the ARC system or the like. I think you've effectively proved that it's really about having good mics, knowing how to place them, and having great players.
Oh 2 questions: did you enjoy the "4K" emulation? and what kind of snare? Sounds outstanding.
