"rough mix" lol. Now you need to explain what's "rough" about this mix, since it sounds perfect to a lot of people. Its better than half the songs on the country top 50, and its definitely better than 80% of the crap on the pop charts. One person's rough is another person's gem, so just release the damn song. Although, more of the slide guitar at the end would be not be a bad thing

The process yes. Not just the end result. I know lead sheets and the Nashville numbering system and all of that. The interesting thing to me is the creative process of session players. You come in and mull it over and throw out ideas. But as a guitar guy, laying down a track, and thinking it's good. Just to get told to try it again in another way can be frustrating. But in the end, that process, is what makes it fun. You create and expand. Then enjoy your part of the project.
There's something magical about this mix. It's not overmixed. Instruments sound natural; I don’t hear processing, I hear just the pure gold of amazing musicians doing their thing. I feel like I’m right there in the studio. This mix sounds gentle and warm, it’s like getting a hug.
Rick, this would make an amazing ongoing series. Get a room full of session players, take a new song by an up-and-coming songwriter, and show the process of making it into a radio-ready demo. Edit each episode down to 20 or 25 minutes. Showcase all the talent, and educate newer musicians about what they can aspire to and how. I would watch every episode, no matter what style of music is being produced.
Yeah, I agree, although personally I think it'd be interesting to have a bit more focus on the engineering and production--everything from mic'ing and monitoring, to how the project is set up in the box, etc.
The drummer. Chris Mchugh, played beautifully throughout, accentuating tempo changes, moods, timing etc. making it seamless. The epitome of not missing a beat. Yes, please do more!
Drumming being so visual and all, I love to check out the micro decisions a drummer takes throughout the song. Chris McHugh is brilliant at this. His fills are tasty and have each their own little build ups, his stops and pick-ups are well chosen (like omitting to play the Bass Drum on the stop) , he carries the song and the intensity without using too much cymbals.. He takes all these decisions in one swoop. Pretty amazing.
This is the heart of Nashville -- pros who play just the right thing to make the song all it can be. It would be cool also to see a long-form video of this session to hear the discussion of parts, how they decided what to put in and what to leave out. That in-between discussion when the individual parts have been worked out and everyone has to come together into one cohesive final product - that's the stuff so many amateur players haven't experienced. It's the difference between just playing your part well and playing for the song.

I can't express how grateful I am for you and what you provide to our (MY) music experience. Thank You! Matt Hudson Valley, NY
Thank the heavens there is still talent like this! Real music, real instruments, real musicians, nailing it live from the floor. If I listen to it again I know I will cry...
Ripped the audio, cut it, added it to my library, switched on repeat, listened to it on my way to work and arrived with a smile on my face ! (Which doesn't happen that often....)
Arranging, writing, recording, mixing, mastering, actual interviews with the musicians (as originally planned)... there could easily be several more videos from this single session, each an hour or two long, and I hope there will be.
I would have loved to see the actual paper parts being played from. The Nashville Numbers system, and what the players are actually looking at. Maybe the players talking about how what they saw on the paper suggested to them exactly what to play on the instruments, as I imagine there is a lot of room for interpretation in this system.
Yes more content like this would be great! Love to see session players play! All the musician had a perfect pocket they filled in the 100% for sure! Great video Rick
The process of writing, producing, playing the parts, and then mix/master can be SO time-consuming and agonizing at times. I'd consider myself a "good musician" on multiple instruments, but THIS video shows the true talent of those who can do in an afternoon what would take even a "good musician" a week or more. Yeah i noticed that the backing vocals were stellar, just sitting under the lead vocal - his mic control was brilliant just stepping back at right time - and what a song too
Being in Nashville, I can tell you these are first-call guys, from Buckley to Daniel to Tom. And Cecilia is an up and coming talent I’ve written with that is going to be huge soon!
Cecilia has not at all gotten out of her shell, I am afraid. She will need serious, serious coaching, and much blood, sweat and tears, for anything to happen as a singer, leave alone as performer. In fact, she may not even have that ambition... but just to write.
You beat me to it. Loved "No Taboo" and "Let the Kingdom Come". I was trying to remember if it was Chris on "Little Drummer Boy" or not; maybe you can remind me.
It looks and sounds effortlles but only we know what it takes to make it sound and look as it is here. True craftsmanship and talent!!! This is gold!! Beautifull song.
I love the "less is more" approach. No vocal histrionics, no guitar wizzardry. Everything fitted nicely into place, straight 4:4 drums, a bit of Rhodes for layering, nice rumbling bass, some acoustic coloring, lil bit of tasty slide guitar, lovely vocals, all subtly accentuated by a second singer just a bit back from the mike, and LOTS of space.
@@dobieprimewhat does that even mean? Are you saying if the song is complex or there is any kind of virtuosity to the musicianship, it’s not about the song? Rush don’t play for the song? For example. I never understood exactly what that means. What are the chances that this song is going to be listened to or talked about 20 years from now?
@@brianshenk6912 this song wont be talked about in a week from now. perfectly fitting for a bottom shelf soap commercial. but no more. all great musicians on this session and brilliantly played. all super tasteful but totally bland. 6 world class artisans but no artist in the studio.

God Rick I have just recorded and produced my own album and omg what i would have given to have these guys playing (i played everything myself so only have myself to blame) - just perfect no over playing here and a beautiful vocal arrangement with those harmonies placed just under the lead vocal - The drummer was fantastic too, just the right amount of Fizz - A subtle but luscious sheen to the production, enhancing the live sound without sanitising it - Blown away man!
Lot of touchstones in this one for me. I've done a lot of time on that studio, last time being an Elvis Costello record that T Bone Burnett produced. Bukovac is a friend and Juanita, the studio manager, is like family to me. Great to see Rick do this and to have the nuts and bolts of a Nashville session highlighted for the curious.
I love this type of content. The musicians creating on the spot gives the music the sense of spontaneity. Pro players equals pro dynamics and sound. Great stuff Rick. Thank you.
Beautiful track and a stellar performance by all the musicians. It's great to see Chris McHugh being well and laying it down as usual. His drumming on Keith Urban’s Defying Gravity is second to none. Thank you, Rick, for making this happen!
I feel like this could have been 30 mins long and I’d have loved it More in-depth on the musicians - showing how they chose the instruments, dialed their sound and some high lights of what they did musically Couple mins on each person would have been rad
The drummer hits really hard for such a soft composition, but the best drum sound is undeniable. All the sounds were great, having the kit far away made it possible. Just wow, wonderful, just wonderful, thanks to all!
Yes please! This band was just brilliant! 3rd take ?!! Cecilia's voice was so evocative as were the harmonies of Daniel. Pure listening pleasure and wonderful that the process is shared. Thank you.
1,000% respect to the musicians for sure! ...But no less than EQUAL respect to the engineering, mixing, and mastering. Even on UA-cam it sounds exquisite. An absolute masterclass. Engineering is a true artform.
For sure! Please do more of this! (McHugh is a beast of a drummer! I’ve been a fan of his work since I was about 16 years old & heard him playing with Whiteheart👍🏻👍🏻)
Please…. More of this. So refreshing… I am not a huge country fan, but this was awesome. Well played, beautifully sung… no auto tuning(!!!!!!,!) Just some great musicians and a pretty song. … the way pop and in some regards rock developing I really think country has a bright future if it’s stands for plain well written material, no overproduction. We need this as a counter weight to what is going on elsewhere in the industry. Back to basic folks.. wonderful. Made my day.
This was so cool. I dig the session guys, these are the people I’ve been into for years. I just love the simplicity that they bring and yet collectively it has a massive impact. I’d give anything if you did more of these videos.
An in-depth interview with Chris McHugh is DYING to be made! The man is an absolute beast,, on of the best pocket drummers of our time! Make it happen, Rick.
Rick this was an AMAZING video! I can't even begin to describe how valuable your insights in the music business are for musicians. Thank you so much for doing all of it! Bless your soul!
I've been through this process many times in Nashville and can absolutely attest to how incredible the musicians are. Mr Mackey is indeed on a number of my tracks. Crazy good folks and great vibes.
I really would enjoy seeing more content like this. Great song and great session players. Vocals were amazing. Buk is a monster on guitar. Besides your channel I watch his all the time. Inspiration Plus!!!!!!!!
Of course it sounds perfect. I think it's too much on the bassy side, but that is part of it's appeal, especially on a song like this. And what is this? Maybe "Country pop cabaret?"
Okay Rick, I've been a fan of your videos for a while but I was part of the 57% that had not subscribed. I have now! This is just absolute magic. Congratulations to Daniel & Cecilia & the musicians (Tom, Todd, Steve, Tim & Chris) that made this possible. It reminds me of the way LA used to be back in the 60's, '70's & 80's (I know I'm showing my age but I was there during that time). It is much needed today with actual people creating new material, recording it & getting it out to the public. Now all we have to do is find a way to better support these wonderful musicians because the record & tech companies just aren't going to do it. Please continue to do these.. They deserve it & we're all better for it!
I was invited up to a Nashville recording session by Tom Wild, a 30+ year session vet. He was both BJ Thomas's & Billy Joe Royal's band leader and featured on PBS's "The Session Players" series to boot. . Great fun watching and sitting next to Tom and watching him record a segment of a gospel track. Tom looked at his watch and said to watch as the red spotlight was about to buzz. Almost to the second the light brightened and he buzzed 2 black gal backup singers. Right in the vocal room they went, shut the door and looked at the chart of a song they had never seen before. They read all the notes, ask each other which part they felt like singing, high/ low and said, "We're ready. Music cued and away they went. . 1st try, and Tommy says,"I think you got it." One gal said check meas 24. I think I missed a note. Rewind, Anadise Pitch correction showed a note barely flat, under the line. Tommy and at looked at each other and could not hear it. He said, "Do you want a 2nd take?". She replied, "Yea, just in case". Tommy," Rolling"... Take 2 :She actually pitch corrected her vocal. Tom and I just looked in amazement at it on the computer screen. She said, "Yup! We nailed it!" Tom, "Yea, perfect, ladies!" And out the booth and door they went. Tom started laughing at my flabbergasted expression (since that whole episode was less than 15 minutes) and quipped, "Yea, the bar's set pretty high here in Nashville". Uh, yea, I guess so! Whew! Somehow, I managed to survived a lovely afternoon w/ a very gracious host and studio pro, to say the least.
Cool story. Professional musicianship must be a joy to behold. Can I make a suggestion to clarify what everyone's jobs are in the studio: 'Gals' are in this case, 'Vocalists'
The VIDEO edit is good here, too. Focusing on the drummer when it needs to, spotlight on the lead guitar when appropriate, etc. Good choice of what-to-highlight. I play a few instruments only as at-home hobbyist and it's so nice to feel like one is inside the studio while magic is really done. I would love more like this one!
You’re spot on. So often, musical performance videos are ruined with idiotic cuts, like focusing on the drummer’s back when the guitar solo is peaking, etc. Totally professional in all aspects. Bravo.

Sounds so good...the process and inside look is priceless. Thank You Rick.
I’ve listened to this song about 20 times in the past few days. I love it! It should be released on ITunes and on the radio. Thank you
Very few songs get repeat listens from me like this one has. I think that Rick has accidentally stumbled onto a hit.
I found it an hour ago and I’ve listened to it 4 times and sent it to friends. Great track.
Great song. Cecilia has a beautiful voice. Daniel did some beautiful and intricate harmonies as well. Beautifully done.
I would like the mix to up the volume a bit on the vocals.
@@fredelin2580nothing wrong with that, writing is where the money is, anyway.
Let me start by saying, this is one of the coolest ideas I’ve seen on either of your channels. Please do more!!
Chris McHugh! Been a fan since his Whiteheart days...such a great drummer! Great video Rick...more of this!
You beat me to it. Loved "No Taboo" and "Let the Kingdom Come". I was trying to remember if it was Chris on "Little Drummer Boy" or not; maybe you can remind me.
Same here with w Whiteheart, I’m looking at the Hotline vinyl across the room that I got when I was 12 in 1986!
Sweet tune! That’s a rad looking studio. Nice one, Rick! Definitely like to see more of this.
I love seeing these, Rick. I am 83 yrs old and I played road gigs and did studio work since the sixties, So This felt like old homes week
Yes Rick, PLEASE give us more content like this!!! It is so amazing to watch pro studio players in action. It's also educational. Thank you for this!
Yes, it's as if these people know secrets that are beyond description and subtly...
well its about the song. its about the music. its not about the "personality" or the perfect voice. the music comes first.
I agree. Most music today is so over produced because the producers have too many things at their disposal with Pro Tools, etc.
@@brianshenk6912 this song wont be talked about in a week from now. perfectly fitting for a bottom shelf soap commercial. but no more. all great musicians on this session and brilliantly played. all super tasteful but totally bland. 6 world class artisans but no artist in the studio.
Fantastic !!!!!!!!
Rick , PLEASE put more content like this !!!!
Love your channel !!
Awesome players !!!! Thank you for taking time out of your busy busy days to do this !!!!
Daniel and Cecelia great tune !!
That song is killer! More videos like that one, please. Outstanding.
That song was so catchy. 🔥👍🏼
Very nice, reminds me of something Lady Antebellum might do.
Stalking you. Lol!!! Hey!
Gorgeous, well written, well played song. All production values are stellar. We'd definitely love to see more content like this Rick. Thank you!
I love this type of content. The musicians creating on the spot gives the music the sense of spontaneity. Pro players equals pro dynamics and sound. Great stuff Rick. Thank you.
If I cannot live my dream, at least I can watch it on screen. Thank you very much Rick. I love seeing how professional musicians work together.
@AntoineVideoLibrary I believe you've just perfectly summarized the overall Beato Experience for many of us oldsters.
Beautiful track and a stellar performance by all the musicians. It's great to see Chris McHugh being well and laying it down as usual. His drumming on Keith Urban’s Defying Gravity is second to none. Thank you, Rick, for making this happen!
I’ve been playing guitar for almost 40 years. Now I want to take up drums
There was not one millisecond of this I didn't enjoy! Song.....Stunning! Playing....Stunning! Of course, more!
Song was ok. It was a run of the mill country song. It’s not like this is going to stand the test of time like a “Ring of Fire” or anything
@@brianshenk6912 Couldn't disagree more (no offense). Absolutely lovely song. Delectable.
You never cease to amaze us with your surprises. Loved it and sure would want more of this in future, Thank you Rick!
This was a brilliant song, and wonderful to see uncle Larry again sharing his amazing gift with us. More please 🙏🏻
Great content. More collaboration with Buk is welcome. The precision and artistry of these Nashville Cats is breathtaking!
I feel like this could have been 30 mins long and I’d have loved it
More in-depth on the musicians - showing how they chose the instruments, dialed their sound and some high lights of what they did musically
Couple mins on each person would have been rad
The drummer hits really hard for such a soft composition, but the best drum sound is undeniable. All the sounds were great, having the kit far away made it possible. Just wow, wonderful, just wonderful, thanks to all!
Keith Urban’s long-time drummer!
I would love to see more like this! That was a joy to watch. Absolute pros!
I LOVE THIS SONG! Are you kidding me? The harmonies, the chord change at "fallin' through mid-air" -- sublime!
Wow. Great to see the Nasville pros do what they do behind the scenes.
We need to see more of this.
😊
Don’t forget… the biggest musician in the world today built her sound and skills on the country foundations exhibited here.
@@jerryballard371 interesting , and who might this be? What is “great” is always determined by nr of listeners?
Absolutely!
You may not be a huge country fan, and that's probably why you liked it.
@@RCAvhstape 😂
That looked fun! Definitely more of these but with MORE BEHIND THE SCENES in the sausage making!
This was so cool. I dig the session guys, these are the people I’ve been into for years. I just love the simplicity that they bring and yet collectively it has a massive impact. I’d give anything if you did more of these videos.
This would be the ultimate series with Rick producing stellar musicians and explaining the process from the producer's and engineer's perspectives.
An in-depth interview with Chris McHugh is DYING to be made! The man is an absolute beast,, on of the best pocket drummers of our time! Make it happen, Rick.
I didn't know much about him--then I heard that beginning fill into groove--borderline unfair to be at that level...
Yeah, the drum work was spot on and fascinating for me.
This. Chris McHugh has credits a mile long. Not to mention was the engine behind Keith Urbans sound
Funny, I didn’t really like his drumming
They're SO professional. Lovely song too by the way.
Yes, more like this! As an aspiring songwriter not living in Nashville this is my dream!
Love your channel Rick!
Awesome content! Polished 3rd take . No doubt the 1st take was fab as well.
Merci for sharing Rick!
Beautiful song. Love watching studio musicians. Nothing flashy. ❤
I really would enjoy seeing more content like this. Great song and great session players. Vocals were amazing. Buk is a monster on guitar. Besides your channel I watch his all the time. Inspiration Plus!!!!!!!!
That vintage Rogers drum set sounds perfect. Always did think their snare drums sounded absolutely killer!!
Of course it sounds perfect. I think it's too much on the bassy side, but that is part of it's appeal, especially on a song like this. And what is this? Maybe "Country pop cabaret?"
The mix works the feel perfectly, but it is super muted, as it should be.
Lovely solid damped snare.
It’s sound as thick as a million chicken condensed in one teaspoon. Love it.
It‘s the drummer making that sound, not the drums!
Yes please! Definitely more videos like these! It is fascinating to see really talented musicians ply their skills in the studio!
Came across Tom during the pandemic. I was hooked after the first video. Great song great vibe. More please.
The way these musicians play comfortably in a session is amazing.
it should not really be "amazing" that people who do somthing for a living are good at it.
When you have great talented people in the room, it comes out so effortlessly finessed.
Amazing to see the apparent ease, definitely professionals! Yes, I would definitely watch more videos like this!
Loved Cecilia's voice. Wonderful production. Yes, please more of these
Tom (Uncle Larry) is one of the world's finest. His channel is a goldmine of guitar playing inspiration and brilliance. More please Rick!
Whew! Somehow, I managed to survived a lovely afternoon w/ a very gracious host and studio pro, to say the least.
now that's something to write home about. epic
Cool story. Professional musicianship must be a joy to behold. Can I make a suggestion to clarify what everyone's jobs are in the studio: 'Gals' are in this case, 'Vocalists'
Love anecdotes like yours. Makes a non-musician like me feel like an insider.
Now, if only some good music came out of Nashville.
I don't think anyone misunderstood what he was saying.@@sianwarwick633
Yes, I would love to see more content like this! I will be surprised if this doesn't become one of your most popular videos.
More of this please Rick, think it would be great to see even more detail on decision making / creative process unfolding ❤
This. 💯. More of you (Rick) talking about what’s happening during the process.
Bravo.
