All of it is incredible - the heavily dub-influenced bass is amazing, too. I'm not really that into the Pistols, but PIL is out of this world, to me. Love the use of phaser/flanger and chorus sounds here on the guitar - sooo good.
Saw them play in New York, Palladium Theater. Mick Jones and Jerry Harrison seated not too far from me (they were not together!). Quite the apocalyptic show.
Keith Levine and his Travis Bean inventing Post Punk with PIL. Good to remember just how important Metal Box was. Goodbye Keith and thanks for all the music.
Hearing Metal Box for the first time with a few mates we were looking at each other thinking WTF is this ?! After a few listens it became a classic , Keith’s guitar work made it so different to what was happening at the time . RIP Keith 🎸⭐️🎸⭐️🙏🏻
RIP Keith Levene. The way Lydon keeps looking at Keith, (the "Yes" roadie), almost unbelieving of the sound coming from his guitar is classic. Even with the indomitable Jah Wobble driving the sound. Steve Howe would have been proud.
Great live performance hi quality recording with a relaxing hypnotic atmospherics ambience for the first PIL song. The second song is more dynamic energetic powerful with a crazy weirdly apocalyptic atmospherics ambience. This is a good example of PIL contrasting Song's a trade mark of what is PIL: Original, Rich, Finest, Smart, Unconventional, Experimental,No commercial & Avantgarde Live Band!
All cylinders. All powered. You can only grasp the horror of this song from PIL's live performances. I missed them this early but, got the Box on the day it was released in the states. I saw them later with John McGeoch on guitar.
Public Image Limited - PopTones, Careering Live The Old Grey Whistle Test 12.02.80. 10.3.24. the best line up....? a very self indulgent band......nice to see musicians get over themselves eventually as well as big A's ire... the anti music agenda must have visited either that or the big A's visiting aunt Irma.....
What an incredible song, this is about a girl who was abducted and gangraped by a group of men. When questioned by the police all she could remember was that she was dragged into a "Japanese car", the "smell of rubber on concrete tar" and that they were playing what she called "Poptones" on the cassette player One of the greatest and most beautiful songs ever written.
I remember my brother getting a cassette deck & putting 2 microphones on the TV speaker when this was transmitted in 1980. I had to stfu whilst this was on. PiL were light years ahead. Even Lydon knows in 2022 that he is not this good .
A Junkie guitarist + a great drummer that they apparently don't really get on with + a man who has no experience playing a bass guitar + a man who writes words but really can't "sing" = brilliance.
@@piplee1439 Dont really want to be "that guy" but fck it!! Diamorphine doesn't really have a delatarious effect on the body so. In and of it's self doesn't kill you. The Pistols was either a profiteer's scam or a conceptual art performance piece, depending on your frame of reference. This, on the other hand, is music made by artists.
I think to appreciate this, you need to hear it on 10 grands worth of audio equipment, blasting out in an empty warehouse. Getting feed back off Bob Harris beard, just doesn't cut it man.
RIP KEITH LEVINE no one played guitar like that incredible

Allan Holdsworth might have, maybe he's jamming with Keith now
Underrated par excellence
Levine also played the brilliant drums on the album version of Poptones. Totally amazing. Never bettered
@@johnned4848 an astonishing talent
"Poptones" is an amazing achievement. I can think of no other song that walks the line between beautiful and terrifying.
Wobble on bass, Martin Atkins on the skins, Keith on guitar and Rotten at his most venomous and experimental, just amazing.

the transition into Careering... jacket off, synth on, camera effects on - 10/10
One of the greatest ever performances in music

The original Line Up was lightyears ahead of their time.R.I.P., Keith Levene.
OMG years ahead. That line up just wow. For me, over 40 years of loving this music. Wow
Great version of Careering.
This absolute beauty of a song gets played in all my cars not just Japanese & long may it continue. Class 🖤✌️
"There is bacteria" = "lyric" = so good. OMG I love the heavy af electronica here. More than I heard on their 80s albums... beautiful.

The greatest Pil line up.
RIP
Punk pioneer and founder of The Clash Keith Levene (65) has died.
Useless trivia: the guitar line for Poptones is lifted from Yes' Starship Trooper. No surprise given Levine's Howe worship.
Saw them in SF, 82'. Fifteen years old. Scariest show ever. Massive crowd. One of the best shows I ever been to.
Very cool. What was the venue?
Oh man! Keith with that Travis Bean guitar and Mistress Flanger swirling away. What a hypnotic sound.
Bless you... Your comment finally led me to the pedal I needed!
so excellent. RIP Levine
The most totally organic sound ever. Send chills to your core.
Jah Wobble on bass. He' s amazing!
This is just coolness on another level! Much thanks.
Martin Atkins is incredible on the skins!.
Agreed. Better than Dudanski and even Brian Brain. Nice one

This is an unbelievably great recording of these songs. Sooo fucking good.
It was actually the bee gees they were listening to, as two jeeks would tend to do
Public Imagane Ltd started from the top with John Lydon and is still very high. Long live John Lydon with his great music! - Coolman :)
unreal performance
