Im literally in tears. I grew up near Philly.and these peoples voices and presence are like an extended family to me. Love em all. And that says alot for itself.....and those people....from a noon and evening news broadcast.
I will always remember when young Lisa back in the 1970's cryed on air when Jim Obrien died the great weather man. Loved how true her heart was and though I lost touch with Action news because I live in Texas I still have never gotten used to any news or local news since leaving N.J. back in 2007. I keep up with them through yube tube and will always love Channel 6 Action news!!!
Channel 6 is known for keeping the best talent for as long as possible. Jim Gardner is the last of the anchors and reporters from the 1970's that help vault Action News over both Channel 3 and Channel 10 and keep it there for over 45+ years.
Lisa has always carried herself in the style and grace of a queen. I've never met her personally ,yet I feel as though she raised me. She definitely raised the bar for minority female anchors in philly. Lisa may God bless you and your family and thank you for showing (us men) that there are beautiful black women who are classy in real life!
Although I live in Arkansas, every summer since I was 9 years I stayed with my Godparents in Philadelphia. My Godmother watched the news religiously and I grew to LOVE watching her on the news. WoW... I think I loved saying her full name just as much as watching her. She definitely earned her retirement.
I never knew her connection to Oprah. Wow. And to think she was so professional at age 24 when she started at Action News. A true living legend in broadcasting. :-)
I saw this the other day and it was sad. It was though a part of my childhood came to an end. I remember all those years ago when she did the noon newscast with Robin Wagner and also how she grieved when Jim O'Brien passed away in 1983. I do not know her personally, but she carried herself in a classy and professional manner on the air as both an anchor and journalist. I am sure her recent health battles influenced her decision to retire and I agree with this decision; her focus should be on maintaining her good health... she's made all the money she needs for the rest of her life between her and her husband.
She really is a class act, always liked Lisa. I thought about this a few months ago - that I haven't seen her on Action News in quite a while. I checked her Facebook page for the heck of it and saw she's been battling this damn illness again since last year, publicly posting her progress, then stopped in late Aug. 2015. Just wish her well, nothing but happiness and hope she gets better! But it does feel bits and pieces of our childhood is coming to a close..I grew up with Channel 6..hate to sound cheesy, but they do feel like a family. Few reporters like Lisa, David Henry retired. Vernon Odom just celebrated 40 years with the channel. And Jim Gardner will celebrate 40 years with PVI on June 1, also just had his 68th birthday.. Ugh, the day he announces his retirement, that's gonna hurt..for me and for many of us. But, it will be well deserved.
I don't think Jim is in any rush to retire. As long as he is in good health, I do not see him stepping down from his perch any time soon. Also, let's not forget that it has been reported that he makes in excess of 2 million per year (I would not be surprised if it's 3+ million by now). His legacy has long been established and he obviously enjoys what he does if he is still working at 68.
For as much as Vernon Odom and Jim Gardner have done in their great careers, They are at the stage of not "IF" they retire, it's "WHEN" they retire. Eventually they will retire (on their own terms). It's 40 years (and counting)for both of them. You have to wonder, who would take over when Jim Gardner steps down. Vernon, Jim, and Lisa's legacies speak for themselves.
She was already a media icon to female classmates when l went to college there in the 90's (GO OWLS!) But l remember being a little kid watching her. l think the word is: "authenticity."
Wow... Ms Lisa always reminded me of Jayne Kennedy. So pretty with a beautiful spirit inside and out. I left Philly for NYC in 94. I was unaware of her illness. So while viewing post on the late Jim O'Brien, I ran across this one. The whole Channel 6 family was prime time at best for their signature intro, to the beautiful people seen and unseen. All have are great memories of that crew. Thanks for posting this video clip... 😉
We all grew up with all these amazing people they made watching the news a pleasure. So many have been at action news a generation and what a generation of warmth and care they gave us all . We love everyone at 6abc action news. It’s 2023 and the eagles are in the super bowl next week fly eagles fly
I moved out of the area and didn't know that she actually came back as an anchor I thought once she left with her health problems that she had permanently retired. I remember when she used to be on at lunch time with co-anchor Chris Wagner.. they seemed to be really good friends and then Chris was no longer there and had read in the papers there was an altercation and the parking lot between Chris Wagner and Lisa Thomas... they made it sound as if Chris Wagner tried to attack Lisa.. I found that hard to believe.. does anybody know what in the world happened ?
That story is utterly false. One afternoon a crazy man punched Lisa in her face right on the lot of channel 6. Chris Wagner was the one who actually reported the story on air with tears and extreme emotions for Lisa being hurt.
I never met Lisa Thomas-Laury myself, but I've heard HORROR STORIES about her from friends who have. My friend interned at WPVI in the 90s and he said she was a monster and used to make the interns assigned to her cry frequently. My ex girlfriend worked at the AMC Marple 10 movie theater. She once told me that Laury banged on the ticket booth and shouted profanity at the clerk on the other side of the glass because the clerk had the nerve to charge her for a movie ticket. She apparently was screaming, "Don't you know who I am? I'm Lisa Thomas-Laury!!" My ex said that they had to tell her that the police would be called if she didn't stop. I'm so sorry that she's been sick and I wouldn't wish that upon anyone. I just hope that over the years she softened and learned to be a bit nicer to others. Like I said, I wasn't there and didn't witness these events for myself.
He just retired, with his last newscast being on December 21, 2022. Brian Taff took over the 6 PM newscast while Rick Williams has done the same for the 11 PM newscast since February.
I grew up watching Lisa Thomas-Laury and admired her professionalism and grace. What a lovely lady!
What year did she come to Channel 6 Action News

oh man when Jim O'Brien was killed, that was brutal to watch

Her husband was a doctor and worked with my grandfather (he was a nurse) before he passed.
Congrats Lisa on a fabulous career. Enjoy retirement.
Jim Gardner was getting really emotional at the end. Lisa was a trailblazer for so many.
