When I was a TV and film puppeteer, I was one of only a handful of British puppeteers that used straightscan monitors. The vast majority preferred reverse scan (which was always a PITA especially if one of the reverse scan performers somehow found themselves using my straight scan mid scene, throwing them off). It’s been 20 years since I shifted over to CG animation and VFX but weirdly now finding myself missing the performance aspect of puppeteering. A lot.

Hey there, Mr. Krutinger! I’m gonna try and do my own puppet videos and this is really helpful! My one question is I hoped you could show how to key out the puppet rods, like how The Muppet movies do. Can you show how to do that?
Than you Adam. I binge watched your videos (in the wrong order mostly🤯) until my brain did that👈. I am a vanlife/adrenaline junky travelling the country with my "Narwhal" recording podcasts. I have a 1983 Toyota Dolphin and completely remodeled for an interview area. My hope is to set up where my Narwhal road mate shows up to interrupt the process of the interviews. You got me thinking about hardwiring cables to certain parts of the vehicle to connect monitors, power, etc. I'll share more when I have more to share 🤞 Thank you for sharing your craft, Cap'n Mac of the LS Narwhal 🦄🚙🐬
I'm a little late to the field of puppetry, but i have found myself in a position of teaching Drama to 5th graders in China. Your channel has opened up a new avenue of content to be taught to my students. Every year we do an "English Day" at the school and I would love some advice on doing a show based on the "Yip Yip characters from Sesame Street. It may not necessarily be a live show, but it would be great if you could do a tutorial on how to make the characters and a demonstration on how a small group go 6th graders could perform a simple sketch. I have some ideas brewing, but have never once in my life made a puppet. I plan on spend all of my summer holiday figuring out and tinkering with it. Any help would be appreciated. Also, I wish you the best moving forward!
So again another thanks. Well there will be a list for the small clamp monitor, the next gen battery. A brand of tools to invest in and why. Awesome reason. Great stuff. I'm a single shooter. On the fly.
I use an old TV that I used to use as my computer monitor. It works great and it's 27 inches so it's plenty big to see across the room. My big issue is lighting my green screen.
Isn't there software... or camera settings, or whatever that you could set to mirror what the camera sees? Also, what about VR headsets? Could those be an alternative to a monitor?
I was wondering how you hook everything up to the monitor to the video recorder I have a professional video recorder different from yours and I can't seem to figure out how to hook the monitor up is there a way to do this or do you have a video on all the wiring of stuff ?
Hello Adam! Thanks for the awesome video, it is very helpful and informative. I wanted to ask would you have a video that talks about sound when recording your puppet show, or do you just use the mic from the camera? Thanks!
It depends on what kind of production. Most of the time we use the mini shotgun mic on the camera. If it’s super complicated we will occasionally prerecord.

Oh, I never thought of that. I thought it was a great for tv since a similar technique was used in the Gorgs from Fragle Rock. Could you try it anyway?
That’s a bit of a different situation since they are not using a raised set like I was demonstrating. That’s impossible to gauge if you were looking out of the puppets eyes unless you were on a traditional set (as I mentioned) but then you would see the puppeteer.
Update: Just finished the stage and most of the lights are here from China. I was using my big monitor from my computer on my desk but turning my head might not be so good when moving the puppet, so I ordered a 12 in monitor for $60 and should be here in a month. Home film-making for this. Near zero out there. Bring us the goods, sir :-)
What is you have the monitor not facing you and you have a mirror angled to when you see in the mirror so it's easier to do a show
Naw. The easiest way is whatever you are used to.

Seen Eyed Puppetry: a small camera is hidden in an area on the puppet’s head and the puppeteer wears a small screen on their arm or chest. This COULD be a more cost effective method since you can purchase a GoPro and have it paired with your personal device. Also, this simplifies training since it is difficult to line up the character’s eyes with the camera. With this technique, you can just turn the head and see what the puppet sees as you do. Imagine this, you construct an eye that an snap off the head and inside there is a small compartment for a small video camera, you pair it with a smart device and just go to town.
This might help with a live performance. But not for a video recording. The method you described would make it impossible to know if you are in the frame of the camera.
Oh, I never thought of that. I thought it was a great for tv since a similar technique was used in the Gorgs from Fragle Rock. Could you try it anyway?
That’s a bit of a different situation since they are not using a raised set like I was demonstrating. You need to see the framing of the shot in that case to make sure you are not too high or too low. That’s impossible to gauge if you were looking out of the puppets eyes unless you were on a traditional set (as I mentioned) but then you would see the puppeteer.
Thanks, for this Adam! Awesome stuff!!
Can you do this with zoom if you don't have access to a monitor setup ? or just your phone ?
Update: Just finished the stage and most of the lights are here from China. I was using my big monitor from my computer on my desk but turning my head might not be so good when moving the puppet, so I ordered a 12 in monitor for $60 and should be here in a month. Enough time to finish the lighting and practice with the puppets. Need to get on Instagram to communicate better...

When I’m an adult I want to be a puppeteer so your videos are a great help! :D
Having my puppet not looking on the camera has been a bit of an issue. Thank you for showing it with a older camera, I was getting a bit discouraged.
Old smartphones and tablets can also be used as monitors. Some cameras will also send the video to the phone/tablet/monitor through Bluetooth or WiFi.
As long as you camera can connect to them.
@@PuppetNerd Right! It's always worth trying...I try to recycle as much as possible.
Good idea but I use my smart phone with a DJI osmo Mobile 3 gimble which has active tracking the software keeps me or the puppet in Prefect shot
What do you suggest for lighting or what do you use now?
