- I just couldn't pass up the chance to try out this Eastonmade 12-22 Wood Splitter when I had a chance. I've seen it at various trade shows before but never had a chance to try it myself until now. Watch as I check out some of the things that I like and don't like about the 12-22 on today's episode. With the auto cycle function on this unit I"ll surely be ripping through the rounds but I'll have to be careful as this thing does a bunch of things on it's own that I"m not used to. Glad you're all here for this demo. Here we go!

Nice new to you got there!!! All you need is a conveyor belt for loading 😁👍
Great splitter but i think i like the vertical one better because you have a better control on the pieces size though the six way is faster defenetly would have to dump into the totes have a great day
Dumping into the totes sure is a great feature and the custom split sizes of the axis
Andrew makes awesome splitters.Hands down. Good for you Sandy- Cheers!
They sure are nice units eh Gord!
Orange and blue. What can I say. Hahahaha. Great machine. That’s what I started with then upgraded to the 22-28 and now the 37D. All fantastic machines. Great video
Great overview Sandy. Thanks!
Thanks Marc!
I’m watching you operate that little beauty and thinking ‘what are you, Canadian?’ There are some illogical things going on with that lash-up.
I’m not sure what you mean
@@sawingwithsandy I was watching you walking back and forth to operate the hydraulic cylinder control lever and thinking that the control lever needs to be on the same side as the loading device. Later you started hanging out on the load side, reaching across to work the lever. B
That's a awesome splitter there buddy not long splitting up a few logs.
Great machine! Andrew is a top notch guy… good for you Sandy!
Jeff
Hey Jeff! Hope the end of summer is treating you well out east there. Leaves are just about changing here already
I had a 12-22.. I sure miss it..
It’s super fast eh!
@sawingwithsandy yeah .. I replaced with the Axis but feel like the 12-22 would have been a better fit for us
Love my 37D - the only thing that will ever replace it is another 37D. Eastonmade makes amazing splitters. See you at Bunyan!
Hey James! Looking forward to chatting with you in Ohio. Coming up real soon
MM77 Approved 👍🏼 👍🏼
Thank you sir! Have a great weekend
I'd love to have it, if I could justify the purchase. I can in no way justify that though. Ah well. Good vid. Thanks.
Yeah you'd definitely have to have a need for a unit like this for sure. It'll make a year supply of firewood in a hurry that's for sure
That is a pretty nice machine. If you had someone just to keep the log loader loaded this would be really fast, but I thing I like the conveyor loading right into the ibc cages a little better.
I’m with ya there Wallace. I like being able to control the split size with the Axis as well
Who knew I needed one of those in my life, but I do! I also think that cradle is genius, no more using your elbow to keep it in place until it hits the wedge.🤨 Good fun at Sandy's!
That cradle sure was nice. I never knew what I was missing with the other horizontal splitters until I tried that out.
Hi Sandy, great videos, been watching you for a few years now. I have to say you don’t look very comfortable using that log splitter.
Hey Paul! Firstly, thanks again for all your support over the years! Yeah I didn’t quite know where to stand yet with this unit. I think operating it from the log lift side would be better and faster for sure. I’ll give it another good run down before too long
Awesome , can't wait for the comparison video ! Great machine and introduction !!!!! 😊🙏👍❤️
Hey there David! Thanks for checking out today's video. I had a great time giving this thing a first go around
Time for a bigger saw
Did you have a chance to try out the upgraded version of their axis splitter? I believe you have the previous version. would love to have your take on that as i’ve had my eye on this unit for a while now . keep up the good work, you rock !
Hi Sebastien! I haven't tried the new upgraded version of the Axis but maybe if Eastonmade has it at the Paul Bunyan show they'll let me give it a try at the show. I've seen it in videos and it sure is quick!
That seams much faster and easier. Like u said with a conveyer that would be the ticket.
Sure was fun trying it out
If you had a lot of large hardwood rounds. that six way becomes a little more efficient, but like all lifts you have to do one round at a time!! I have to still feel that a six way needs to be attached to a processor that cuts the logs to size. and a conveyor to load, to be truly efficient!!
I hear ya there Tim! This unit sure makes wood in a hurry and having the rounds a bit larger would be all the better
YES!! The one drawback is the inability to load your split logs directly into your totes. On the other hand, that six-way wedge - if you could adapt that to your vertical splitter, you would have the best of all worlds. Hey, one guy likes Foster's Lager, and the next likes Singha. (You know me... Bombay Sapphire martini drinker) Either of those machines looks outstanding to me, Sandy.... hope you liked that mill plan I sent. Let me know if you have any questions.
Hey Carl! Thanks for taking the time to send those plans off. I saw them come onto the email but haven’t look at them yet
I agree that cradle seems to be where it's at.
It sure seems like the way to go for horizontal splitters
I've noticed on quite a few other channels and yours Them Huskies don't bog like the Stihl would you agree. 👍🇺🇲👊👊
I do like he husky 555 I’ve got. It is surprisingly powerful for the 60cc size. Sure grunts and gets it done
I dunno. I find it painful to watch him chainsaw. Don’t get it? Was out with my 500i yesterday and dropped down to the 20 inch bar and could hardly hold on to it !! By the time Sandy gets through those medium 8-10 inch maple - I could blast through 2 or 3 16 inch hard beech logs. The 500 roars at full throttle and never ever slows down like his 555 videos. I am thinking Sandy is just 2 to 3 hours East of me …. I am in hard Elm/Maple/Beech country and limb with a 261C / 16 inch. The 500 with a 25 inch bar does the hard work. I don’t know Huskies but watching him use one is painful to watch. I have to hold back to 500 at ALL times - mind you it is 80cc & fuel injected but why mess around with a limbing saw on logs ? 500 only weighs 19,5 lbs with bar & fuel and I walk the bush with it. I am 62 years old. The 261 is 14.5 lbs. ……End of the day; using about $36,000 in log splitters and then a little limbing saw on logs just makes zero sense to me. Sandy - try a Stihl 500i with a 20 inch bar on your logs ; you will be shocked ! It is ferocious!! Is the best word I can think of. Watching you with that heavy looking 555 is just too hard to watch bro. Greetings from Grey County.
After watching it operate for 5 minutes, I understand why the customer returned it.
To be fair, the operation of it is only as good as the operator and I was a bit scattered here trying to figure things out. I'd imagine things will look different with an operator who has some practice with it
I would prefer the stand up one with the conveyor, or use the tractor with the bucket, thanks Sandy
Hey Brian! I sure do like the Axis with the log lift and conveyor. The 6 way wedge is nice for speed but I like the precision of the axis I think
That dude is a beast!
Hey Andy! Thanks for checking out the video
I like it but your other one is better
I think I like the Axis as well for the type of splitting I do
I'm sure you could figure out a way to adapt your log cutting table and just roll them across to the splitter with out having to bend over to roll or pick up rounds (Oh my Back!) to put on the log lift all the time. It is a good splitter I can see the best of both worlds with both splitters. Cheers!
You’re right there John. Keeping the back in good shape would be key to running this with my log deck. I’d like to find some conveyor rollers somewhere to move the rounds one day
Heath and Rachel at Hard Working Man (youtube) have done a couple videos comparing an Axis to one of their other commercial horizontal splitters, the race wasn't even close. I've noted with 6 way wedges that unless you have the perfect diameter rounds to give you the desired split size then you are forever resplitting. I thing the combo of the Eastonmade tall 4 way wedge and one of their box wedges is the way to go for bulk firewood production. For a solo firewood operation, I still think the Axis or any commercial grade vertical splitter is the way to go.
I think the main thing that I notice is the axis makes more uniform pieces whereas the 12-22 makes whatever size that goes through the wedge
nope. its a step backward, back to working harder not smarter, my back hurts just watching the video. . . having to bend and then handling the splits multiple times. . . needs to be a way to hook up a conveyor.
I’d want one of their conveyor units for it or sure
While they make some stout equipment I go to believe that anyone who needs a 6-way wedge for processing would also need a way to put it into a tote or something. The stack of logs that thing made and the effort to keep the rounds aligned seems like a lot of work compared to your splitter. But it was nice of you to make a video to help sell the splitter. I am sure there is a person out there that will be very happy to get it, for the right price.
I think since this thing makes firewood so fast a good addition would be a firewood conveyor. That matched with this would be quite the firewood setup.
Sandy, like u had stated, it woulda been nice to have the firewood go up into a ben. It looks a back breaker to me..
Yeah that’s the only drawback I see right now for my setup
I noticed the log lift bogs the motor much more than the splitting ram
Yeah I didn’t notice any bogging when using the ram.
👍great video, Sandy 😎
Thanks Paul! Always great to see you in the comments
@@sawingwithsandy they say that it will help you with the algorithms
Good afternoon, Sandy! Seems like a lot of walking around the splitter, plus you have to double handle the logs to fit into your totes. Maybe a nice unit for a small acred home owner, but in your case, not so much. It's a beautiful sunny day and 23C with no humidity. Greetings from Peterborough.
Hey there Ken! I sure have some learning to do with that unit. Beautiful day out there for sure
Seems a bit of a poor design setup. Too many inefficient movements are required for a solo operator.
Could also be rookie operator as I’ve never used a splitter like this before
