Hi everyone! My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian.
Today I am going to talk about Leptospirosis in the dog, more commonly known as Lepto. Lepto causes serve liver and kidney disease, but thank goodness there is a vaccine.
Lepto is spread through other animal's urine or bodily fluids. Because dog's get lepto commonly, there is a vaccine for leptospirosis "Lepto". The lepto vaccine covers most of the different kinds of lepto, but like any vaccine it is not perfect. The lepto vaccine is usually boostered the first time given and then it is given every year.
If a dog gets lepto, the veterinarian will notice liver and kidney disease, and this can be very serious. Lepo is so serious it can kill a dog if not treat. Even with treatment, some dogs do not make it or they develop chronic kidney disease.
There is a blood and urine test the veterinarian can do to diagnose the leptospirosis. Once diagnosed, the veterinarian will put the dog on IV fluids and given different antibiotics to fight the infection. Most dogs stay in the hospital for days! Humans can get leptospirosis too, so we need to be really careful when handling a dog with lepto.

My sister's dog got lepto and the kidney damage was severe before we knew anything was wrong with her. The staff at the veterinarians advised us to call the health department and get tested ourselves for it. We didn't have it but it was an awful experience for the dog and us. Don't hesitate to get the vaccine for your pet!

Thank you for being real about this topic! I’ve seen an older vet before downplay leptospirosis, making it seem like it wasn’t an issue at all.
I love in a very humid climate where there’s a lot of wildlife so lepto is a bigger risk compared to many other places

My little boy just suffered from this and unfortunately passed away a few weeks ago. I moved to TN more than 2 years ago and went to two different vet clinics in which neither clinic included lepto in my babies vaccines.
The first vet diagnosed him with pancreatitis in a Fri and by Sun a trip to the ER.
The vet suspected lepto and the test was sent out. But she began treatment for it anyway. Grand total of 5 nts at the ER over a week and a half and he was only getting worse.
He got his wings exactly 2 weeks from symptoms.
I'm beyond devastated with my loss and lack of knowledge and treatment from local clinics.

What you’re explaining sounds like my case. My healthy 3 year old dog suddenly had crazy high liver enzyme levels out of nowhere. She was hospitalized, was on IV fluids and electrolytes, and antibiotics. Her liver levels are still high so we have her on 2 liver supplements, a diet to support her liver, and she’s now on doxycycline. However, the ER vets for some reason are trying to tell me it could be Lymphoma. I strongly believe she has an infection. She’s been on antibiotics for 3 days now and seems to be improving physically! Not lethargic or vomiting, seems stronger, gets excited, barks when the door bell rings. My vet took 2 lepto tests and one came back negative which has me worried. Still waiting on the antibody test. She also presents with a singular inflamed lymph node. I just can’t see my dog developing such a serious cancer that completely damaged her liver in one month. I’m hopeful she will get through this but scared. Especially since I don’t have an official diagnosis. I wish my dog could see you!

My dog is old but just 3 weeks ago we walk 2.6 miles every day. The distance dwindled as she seemed to get tired. One day didn’t greet me seemed disoriented and stared at me for minutes before getting up. Following day, didn’t raise head, and it was friday noght off to ER vet. Lepto. Left with an anti nausea and 2 a day Dioxy cycline antibiotic. This is second day of pills, she has had 3 antibiotics this far. She seems to have labored breathing on her side but otherwise fine. Lacks energy but is drinking fine and maybe a little extra when up. Her food consumption is a third the norm and is steak bits, overeasy eggs, nutrition paste, a bit of cat food,… basically all the things she never gets routinely. She wont touch pet foods now.
I have a question about this.
Is there a time the medicine tends to get in the system and really start swinging the dog on the incline to normalcy? 14 days of pills,… what can I expect with food, energy. The doc said her kidney, liver, limph, counts were slighty high and slight anemia and seemed optimistic. Otherwise, my potcake pup has always been a self driven rockstar. It is hard to see her like this, but last time she was off her counts rose before normalizing.
    Any thoughts?

My beautiful, kind dog Blueberry was diagnosed lepto 3days ago.We were on a long weekend away with us wit her mum and her baby sister. We didn't see any sign of lepto only that she didn't eat.
And then..the same day 6pm I saw her waking like she was dizzy. She slept with me i monitored her.Following day 8am I took her to the vet. They did some blood test which came back 5mins later that she had lepto. She got 4 vaccines plus 8x10ml dog blood transfusion from my brothers Caucasian dog.My Blueberry is a mini pincher. On Monday after her blood transfusion and 4 vaccines she got better even she wagged her tail and drank water and peed.I was very happy. She slept with me again.Monday and on Tuesday she got 4vaccinnes and no IV.Yesterday was Tuesday and in the afternoon she was again latergic so I took her back to the vet worried about if she dehydrated. The vet said No because her skin is flexible.I was ok.
We kept giving her water with a surringe.Today morning she passed away my beautiful, kind, always smiley Blueberry💔😭We buried her under the rose tree and cherry tree planted lots of flowers on her covered her with a softest blankie ans roses.
I'm so soooo heartbroken and her baby sister Mango is sad, looking for her .
I'm blaming myself if I even took her to the right vet because as I read the survival chance is 80%.Why te vet didn't give her IV fluid. And that test how come it came back in 5mins if they say it takes longer to get the result?!? My dogs had combination vaccines when they were little, but the vet said they need it every year....I did not know this!!! If I knew I would of gave it to them.My main priority were and is my dogs health, well being and happiness. At this point I am so sooo heartbroken😭I already miss her smile and even to kiss her

Yes the liver function was on 10% and the kidney was giving up as her urine was red.
The vet literally shouted at me saying why didn't I notice that my Blueberry's gum and skin was already yellow.I didn't notice because she had black fur and she didn't show a sigh of anything related to health issue until Sunday afternoon. On Monday morning we at the vet 8am.
My Blueberrys little sister still off.I can tell she is not the same even though I spoil her, take her and her Mum long walks, holidays,we play and all.She was like a glue to her sister..She was more like a Mum to her even though her Mum is alive with her.Im worried about her, because her Mum is already 13yrs old and my baby is only 6yrs old.Im thinking to rescue a puppy so she can still play and be happy again💗

I am home and let me tell you I could not keep her alive if I wasn’t home. She needs around the clock care I hope she makes it but I’m treating her like it’s life and death because it is! The hospital i went didn't hospitalize dogs with lepto to my surprise and it was a saturday. All other vets were already closed and vets dont open on sunday i had to wait to monday to take it to another vet. I was given doxypolicin or something like that on tablets and i took the dog home but the doggy kept vomiting it all the food and the antibiotics . On mondayshe was already very bad, she was all yellow and was unconcious. I took it to the vet but she arrived dead by the time i got to the vet.
Don't ever let the vet tell you to take the dog with you or give you tablets They should be hospitalize ASAP. The antibiotics are supposed to be delivered by IV or injections. That is because they will vomit everything in the next days.
