Two of my brothers were De La Salle brothers and went to Hopwood College as it was known, in the 1960s. We often visited . There was reputed to be a priest hole but it hadn’t been found. That is definitely a Tabernacle you found. It would originally be attached to the alter in the chapel, it would also have had another piece on the top. It was used to hold the consecrated hosts between masses and was would have been gilded with gold leaf, inside and out. I am so glad you are renovating the hall, it is an important piece of Catholic History in Lancashire. Have you been in touch with the Catholic Diocese of Salford? They maybe able to shine some light on its history.
Wow! I love you are getting a crash course on English history through your ancestral home! Pretty amazing history to have! Lucky you! I hope you have the money honey to get the job done!
3:07 I shared this with my archaeologist sister and she said: It's a common misconception that we travel by ambulance! We actually can't afford something that flashy, so we travel by clown car. You can fit far more archaeologists in that way! 😂😂
Good on you I am sure there are lots of secrets to unveil after all your ancestors lived there. How exciting as all the layers begin to tell their story. Big shout out to the volunteers as well. Thank you Hopwood
cheers Wendy- thanks so much for your comments. Yes we keep discovering more and more! I'm excited to get more videos out. You are right - the volunteers have been amazing and we are very thankful to have so much support!
Just a little note , the De La Salle brothers ran a teacher training college there, and they built another chapel on the newer part of the campus,I think it it now part of the art block for the school there. It was architect who built the Metropolitan Cathedral in Liverpool ( known locally as paddy’s wigwam) and he based the design of the Cathedral on their chapel.
Would love a tour of that house ,don’t think I’d want to spend the night in there alone 😂😂,awesome to find a secret room though,Another great video Hopwood 👍👍👍
This is my last comment Hopwood, and the third video I have watched, as in my earlier comments I said I had been given a tour by one of the De La Salle brothers he told us on that tour that there was a priests Hide Hole, so that is probrably what you found. For more information about some of the things regarding the hall you may try and contact the De La Salle brothers as they may have more photographs and information on the old hall. Also the club house of the golf club used to be, "The Lodge" for the Hall. Final part, I think (note the word think), but, "The Norton Grange" was also owned and part of the Hall's grounds.
Don’t know if anyone still checks comments in posts several years old, but here goes. The camera footage clearly shows a prominent wall with a brightly painted coat of arms above and to the left of where the artifact (tabernacle/vestry cupboard) was found. Any comments on that coat of arms and the other architectural features found in that space?
Hi Gloria - yes that is also one of the Hopwood family coat of arms. They vary as new ones were often created when a marriage occurred. The fireplace is dated 1658 and was a gift from Lord Byron and is thought to have come from his ancestral home that was being dismantled in the 1800s. The ceiling above the fireplace was designed by Edgar Wood and we made a video about the first step in the process of restoring it that you can watch with this link: ua-cam.com/video/eRjxCiklh4k/v-deo.html&t I hope that answers your questions!
HI@@gloriasmestad3803I may be mistaken but I believe you're seeing the coat of arms that is just below the priest hole. I'll take another look. Thank you!
I know this is a bit outside the box but have you ever thought of having a medium go in and give a reading if you do please record and post. Also I'm an electrician who lives in Heywood if you need a hand at wkends let me know .
Thanks Scott! yes we will definitely record if we have a medium. It would be great to have your help. Could you please email your contact details to Office@HopwoodHallEstate.co.uk or let us know the best way to get in touch. cheers
Thanks Betty - we are trying to make them more often so hopefully soon. Make sure to click on the bell icon so that it alerts you when we put out new videos. cheers
Truly fascinating and a work of love. Have you considered having some mediums or "ghost hunters" come to the house, or working in concert with one of the many television productions of this popular genre? Have you already found this site/url? There's a little bit of information about the home's original chapel, which would have been at least partially destroyed during the Reformation. There's also quite a bit regarding the family's reluctant, eventual conversion from Catholicism to Protestantism. www3.telus.net/public/a3a87173/hopwoods_of_hopwood.htm "This stone gives the exact date of the dedication of the church extension that was purposely dedicated on the ninth day of the ninth month --- the ninth year after Flodden to the day." The Battle of Flodden was September 9, 1513 (!),
Thanks Maureen! yes we are very interested in investigating all these areas -- and to have the cameras rolling when we do it! Thanks for the link- I am constantly amazed by the history of the Hall ! I appreciate your help & support. cheers
@@HopwoodXIV I only found out about an hour ago, i've never heard of the hopwoods before but the house looks very beautiful. Love the fireplaces and carved wood stunning. The first hopwood in my line is Margaret 1684 and i've gone back to John 1480 so far. It went downhill from there onwards and we became mill workers in stockport. I had no idea we were from such noble stock lol
"Mummified Mold" is my new Realtor term... I believe King James I was not only famous for writing a bible and being Mary, Queen of Scots son, He persecuted Catholics too... that's why Guy Fawkes and crew wanted to get rid of him by blowing up Parliament!! Love your videos, keep them coming!!!
plz plz dont PRIEST HOLE no and again no i doubt if its even a secret room it would have held something like machinery that was upgraded and the room was no longer needed
Maybe send it to Antarctica?! Isn't that what was done a couple of years ago with the Ark of the Covenant? King Henry VIII needed to keep offing those Catholic Priest pedos!! Secret rooms?

Thanks Bob - really helpful info. Yes great suggestion!
As a catholic, I knew right away it was a tabernacle. As the above commenter said, it’s used to hold the consecrated hosts. What a find!

Hi Hopwood
Could the cabinet that you found in the secret room be part of a small altar ?

It could be a mini model of the 17th century version of Hopwood Hall. Or the model of a gothic church cut up.
Maybe it is a secret prayer room from the Tudor period?
Could be what ws called a "priest room." This is where masses were held and also priests could hide when Catholics were outlawed.
Could it be a priest hole?
okay, do not put the toaster in the cabinet. btw, you got top notch help there. bob knows his stuff, in america they woulda used it for firewood.
Haha right
Are the ghost friendly or angry? You'd think they'd be happy you are restoring the hall.
Thanks - yes they seem very happy!
🕊👍🏻🍀
They hid priests? Hadn’t even gotten to the part that they mentioned it or found the tabernacle. Need to know the history people…
It’s part of a sacristy Vestry alter.
Thanks Michelle! We'll look into that - if you have any other thoughts please let us know
I'm guessing smuggler's hold, or priest's hole.
LOL I thought u were gonna fall off the ladder. B careful!
Haha I will! Thanks!
henry didnt kill folks as a rule for been catholic he didnt give a hoot he wanted the land and cash from the church
