    Given the behaviour of a number of drivers I witnessed today and where they decided to leave their vehicles, I think it is time traditional parking fines made a comeback.

      Since this was 17th-Century Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory wasn't written until the '60s wouldn't it be the prototype of Violet Beauregard?

      That would be a scold's bridle from the looks of it.

      @emd476 That punishment that the woman is enduring in the illustration is called the "scold's bridle" & was a punishment for nagging wives, women prone to gossip, etc. The mask had a piece that fit over the tongue and prevented the wearer from speaking. The point was public humiliation - including being led around town on a leash) to dissuade the accused from engaging in the behavior in the future. I'm guessing it was extremely uncomfortable and would result in excessive salivation & possible damage to the tongue. It was mostly used on women, but a man could be sentenced to the same treatment. I wonder if some people thus punished would engage in selective mutism to avoid even the possibility of a further stint wearing the scold's bridle.

    Maybe it's time to go back to the olden days when prisons where just used to hold the person until sentencing. I'd love social shaming punishments to be a big thing. Like because you bullied people for their clothing you must now perpetually wear yesteryear's fashion for five years, and there's always a mustard stain at the worst possible bit.

    Not so fun but still interesting fact: Punishment of the Sack was also said to have been done in the Ottoman Empire to people who smuggled coffee beans which were illegal for a time in the 16th and 17th centuries.

    • @Qilue
      @Qilue Рік тому +2

      That was for smuggling them out of empire, not into. It was an economic measure to maintain the coffee monopoly. Eventually someone did man age to smuggle some beans to the Americas and the monopoly was broken.

  • @billyeveryteen7328
    @billyeveryteen7328 Рік тому +9

    I assume the answer is "probably not," but is the Punishment of the Sack where we get the term "sacked" (meaning "to be fired") from?

    • @nintendoentersoft
      @nintendoentersoft Рік тому +11

      Yeah it's not. Getting sacked originated because tradespeople carried their tools in a sack so when you don't need em anymore you tell em to pack their stuff and leave.

    • @dbmag9
      @dbmag9 Рік тому +1

      Adding to what ZeppoJR said, the original expression is 'to be given the sack' which makes the origin clearer.

    • @krashd
      @krashd Рік тому +1

      The modern equivalent is when people in office jobs get fired and are handed a cardboard box for all the junk on and in their desk. They 'got the sack' but a cardboard box is cheaper and easier to sort their items in.

    • @interestedbystander196
      @interestedbystander196 Рік тому +4

      @@krashd Actually no, getting the sack and getting fired are two quite different things. And this fits the bill for QI, as it is indeed quite interesting.
      Getting the sack, i.e. a sack to put your tools in and leave, was a "no hard feelings" kind of thing. There is no more work for you, so here's a sack to take your tools to the next job.
      Getting fired was much more egregious, and was reserved for people who had done something wrong (stealing, cheating, fighting, bad parking, etc.), and whose employment was terminated on that basis. Their tools, which typically belonged to the workman, were burned so they could not work again (until they got new tools). Tools were "put to the fire", so the workman was "fired".
      As you see, getting fired was much worse than getting sacked.
