This clip is from QI Series P, Episode 10, 'Pain & Punishment' with Sandi Toksvig, Alan Davies, Jimmy Carr, Alice Levine and Lee Mack.
Given the behaviour of a number of drivers I witnessed today and where they decided to leave their vehicles, I think it is time traditional parking fines made a comeback.
They’re not going to address the woman with the party hat/cage/leash who is forced to watch her poor barrel husband rolling away like the second coming of Violet Beauregard
Agreed! Most bizarre headwear.
Yeah, I was waiting for that too. Not every day you see a picture of a skold's bridle.
Since this was 17th-Century Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory wasn't written until the '60s wouldn't it be the prototype of Violet Beauregard?
That would be a scold's bridle from the looks of it.
@emd476 That punishment that the woman is enduring in the illustration is called the "scold's bridle" & was a punishment for nagging wives, women prone to gossip, etc. The mask had a piece that fit over the tongue and prevented the wearer from speaking. The point was public humiliation - including being led around town on a leash) to dissuade the accused from engaging in the behavior in the future. I'm guessing it was extremely uncomfortable and would result in excessive salivation & possible damage to the tongue. It was mostly used on women, but a man could be sentenced to the same treatment. I wonder if some people thus punished would engage in selective mutism to avoid even the possibility of a further stint wearing the scold's bridle.
alice levine is just adorable
Indeed she is
Fricking gorgeous, too.
@@KarlBunker she sure is
Maybe to look at, but from what I have previously seen, I think she can be a bit of a bitch.
OI! I saw her first!
Newcastle Brown Ale is worth the humiliation.
Thanks for the tip.
Damn, you got that right!
"Nookie broon" Never see that in pubs here in Dundee but step into any pool hall and it's all people seem to drink.
Maybe it's time to go back to the olden days when prisons where just used to hold the person until sentencing. I'd love social shaming punishments to be a big thing. Like because you bullied people for their clothing you must now perpetually wear yesteryear's fashion for five years, and there's always a mustard stain at the worst possible bit.
YES!
And it must either be comically oversized, or uncomfortably small and tight.
Well the one from the 17th century seems tame compared to the other two so I suppose there has been some progress.
These shorts can’t compare to an all-new episode, but they do go some small distance toward making the wait for next season slightly less onerous. So thanks, kind of.
Not so fun but still interesting fact: Punishment of the Sack was also said to have been done in the Ottoman Empire to people who smuggled coffee beans which were illegal for a time in the 16th and 17th centuries.
That was for smuggling them out of empire, not into. It was an economic measure to maintain the coffee monopoly. Eventually someone did man age to smuggle some beans to the Americas and the monopoly was broken.
I assume the answer is "probably not," but is the Punishment of the Sack where we get the term "sacked" (meaning "to be fired") from?
Yeah it's not. Getting sacked originated because tradespeople carried their tools in a sack so when you don't need em anymore you tell em to pack their stuff and leave.
Adding to what ZeppoJR said, the original expression is 'to be given the sack' which makes the origin clearer.
The modern equivalent is when people in office jobs get fired and are handed a cardboard box for all the junk on and in their desk. They 'got the sack' but a cardboard box is cheaper and easier to sort their items in.
@@krashd Actually no, getting the sack and getting fired are two quite different things. And this fits the bill for QI, as it is indeed quite interesting.
Getting the sack, i.e. a sack to put your tools in and leave, was a "no hard feelings" kind of thing. There is no more work for you, so here's a sack to take your tools to the next job.
Getting fired was much more egregious, and was reserved for people who had done something wrong (stealing, cheating, fighting, bad parking, etc.), and whose employment was terminated on that basis. Their tools, which typically belonged to the workman, were burned so they could not work again (until they got new tools). Tools were "put to the fire", so the workman was "fired".
As you see, getting fired was much worse than getting sacked.
Just leave us in the dark about the woman next to the barrel then… 🤔
Joke's on you.... any cloak I wear is a drunkard's cloak.
Because you're a drunkard
Traditionally the second half of all QI episodes is the `animal cruelty` round. A satirical look at how weve tortured animals overmthe centuries.
Anything that has to do with Assyria you know is going to be bad news
Silly QI, you don't need to put Alice Levine in the thumbnail. I was going to watch it regardless.

"The sack", I knew that as being "Seabagged".
Better than being teabagged, I suppose.
I only became aware of Alice Levine a few months ago, when I started listening to her podcast British Scandals. I proceeded to binge listen to all available episodes. I then googled her and I am now convinced that she is the most beautiful woman I’ve seen in many many moons. I feel pretty sure that someone is going to come along to tell me how wrong I am. Don’t bother.
Have you seen her on Taskmaster?
@@danielyeshe No, but I’ll look for it. Is it on UA-cam?
@@davidhull1481 Only clips. Are you in the UK? It is on Channel 4's app.
@@davidhull1481 There are certainly clips. And it is on channel 4 if you have access to that. And on Netflix - if you're not in the UK you will probably need a VPN.
Sounds like that Assyrian warlord had the right idea on parking...
Penalty of the sack. Don't threaten me with a good time.
At least with the 'Sack' you have the luxury of having a piss or a crap in private!
That was the idea of the drunkards cloak, its wasnt just to shame

They don't even get to guess the answer. They ask a few questions and are then told the answer. A bit pointless.
It’s a panel show, not a quiz show.
@@ferretyluv It's actually described as a "panel game quiz show".
They are awarded points for giving correct or interesting answers and points are deducted for giving wrong answers or ones that are stupidly obvious.
If they are being awarded points, they should be able to ask more than 1 or 2 questions before being told the answer.
