Many thanks for this and your other videos. It's great that you are prepared to invest the time and commitment into producing these outstanding, transparent and encouraging lessons. The saxophone is a retirement project for me and your clear communication of these techniques really helps. Many thanks.
What an entirely lovely message to receive on an otherwise cloudy & dreary Monday (no bank holidays for musicians!). Really appreciate you taking the time to comment & for your support of the channel. These videos are very time consuming & it's people like you which keep me going with them. Thanks again. C
I'm 60 years old, love music, but have never attempted to play. Just bought a Yamaha alto sax and have no earthly clue what to do, so I'm watching your video's. I want to play Pink Floyd's "Us and Them" soon. Reading music almost seems harder than learning Latin.
I'm glad one person said that you don't necessarily have to use the tip of the tongue. The most important thing is that whatever works for you is the best. Everyone does something a little different and that's ok.
paul j it's a technique I originally learned as a classical flautist. Useful!! If you double Saxes, I recommend trying it on a smaller horn 1st - alto/soprano - as the bigger the instrument the more tricky this technique becomes. Cx
Good quick run through. I think double tonguing is used more in classical play it seems. Best part (besides sticky your tongue out) was illustration of the difference in sound produced by the three forms.
I realized another that I use which is in essence to flick my tongue so I will use the underside of my tongue coming off the roof of my mouth. I find that if I am articulating a syncopated section that is the easiest form for me.
Tina Hughes how is it working out? I'm playing for 2 days. I'm doing it by myself.. i think i will learn all the scales but with the tounging technique it sounds way better. Is this a hard thing to learn?
Is it normal to get the breath sound through the sax before the note begins to sound? I have never noticed it before but just uploaded a video to my channel and noticed it on my video. I think I was tonging but maybe I wasn't doing it correctly.
Yes indeedy. High on my list of intended videos. Trouble is, it's such a broad topic! Think I'll begin with absolute novice then add more & more improv lessons as the weeks go on. Hope to get the 1st improv tutorial in the series online ASAP Hun. Cx
Thanks for the great videos, really helping me as a beginner! Are you supposed to tongue after every note then? I'm practising it with my scales and it's making my them very staccato.
Hiya! I love your video but I'm having a bit of trouble. Is it bad that I keep my tongue on the reed between tonguing notes? I just started learning how to tongue and its hard not to put my tongue back on the reed between notes to stop my note, especially when I'm tonguing notes fast. Please help!
Having so much trouble with a tight embouchure, can't seem to relax my face. Playing for a bit over a year. Love to play but haven't found a good sound yet. Getting SO discouraged. Any ideas? Thanks, you sound great!
I generally find tight embouchure is a result of your jaw compensating when diaphragm is less engaged & throat is too closed. Imagine the back of your tongue "Ga" "Ka" is pushing back. This should open it up. For diaphragm, make sure you practice standing up & really think about whether this muscle is engaged. Also make sure you're definitely breathing through the mouth not nose. If you have a habit of breathing through the nose it causes all sorts of issues with your playing. Buy a swimming nose plug to check this isn't the case for you. Hilarious but effective! Hope that's helpful! Cx
Tracy Cooke My teacher pretty fixed this with the way he taught vibrato. He had me go as wide as I poossibly could at first and closed it in, pretty much forced me to loosen my embouchure, hahaha.
I am an excitable one I suppose! Hopefully makes learning fun for you guys. Glad you're finding the channel useful and thanks for getting in touch Darren. Cx
+Chez Taylor-Francis. Sax i know its out of the way now so we can move on!....😂, i like your lessons, im a complete newbie at the age of 31! (wouldnt have guessed that would you) ye immature...cant wait to play!

I'm not sure the tongue was an entirely necessary demonstration, but it happened! 😆 Thanks for the comment. C

+metamurph interesting! Not sure if I use that one… I'll try out today! Thanks for the heads up. C
Useful, fun, tongue in cheek video. (Could not resist the pun). But yeah, good idea: Please make that double tonguing clip.
Ah, saxophone jokes. So many puns, so little time ;-) Thanks for supporting the channel. I'll get on that double tonguing vid for you. Cx

Loves your vidoes. Can you do a video about improvisation?

Thanks for the comment! Hope it was useful. I'll certainly try to get some more up for you soon. Any requests or areas of interest Hun? Cx
Possibly a video on mouthpieces and tip openings. How does the brand/grading of the mouthpiece affect the tone? Good day!
+Semini96 ah yes! I have LOTS of opinions on mouthpieces! Will get on this for you soon Hun. Thanks for supporting my tutorials. Cx
