  • Hawk Roosting is a poem by Ted Hughes. It was published in the year 1960. The Hawk is the first-person speaker in this poem. It speaks with an air of authority and narcissism. It sits in tall trees, kills the prey with a single flight, decides who will die, and feels that the Earth looks up at it for inspection. This is one of the earliest animal poems by Ted, in which he discusses the instinctual nature of animals. In his own words, "Actually what I had in mind was that in this Hawk Nature is thinking. Simply Nature. It's not so simple because maybe Nature is no longer so simple."
