the difference between E.L. James and Colleen Hoover is that the fifty shades is smut, with a very problematic male main character and erika leonard knows it, but colleen really thinks her 6th-grade-level texts are empowering.

For example, in Slammed the female main character's dad dies suddenly, but the mom actually has cancer so she dies too, leaving the female MC alone to raise her primary school age brother. The male MC already lost both of his parents in a car accident and has been taking care of his younger brother ever since, making the MCs perfect for each other (except the male MC is the female MCs teacher, but you know they are destined to be together by their suffering)
I'm so glad I found your video, because I had heard about controversy but never read the books or watched the movie and I did not want to need to. Now I have some things I can actually use to ask my friends why they think these things are okay.
Justin did an amazing job at bringing awareness to domestic violence abuse. It's a very real and important issue !! Not a romantic movie but real life drama!!
It sounds like the author has some latent masochistic traits and she decided to write some bad 80s Mills and Boon "romance" novel that doesn't fly in the 21st century since men who "treat you mean to keep you keen" are seen for the abusive douchebags they are and there is a lower tolerance for those situations being romanticised. Seems like the dv aspect was more of an afterthought despite saying the book is supposed to be some sort of a survivor's tale. Could be wrong though 🤷♀️
All I'm thinking is 'big yikes,' and I won't be watching this movie or reading the book. I don't believe it's about taking sides; it's about observing what we're given from both parties and making rational discernments. From what I see, Justin is nothing like what people depict him to be, and authenticity is something you can't fake. Also he isn't the one trying to sell me shampoo or a coloring book, the most he's promoted was the 'No More' foundation which helped them with the film and he also shared resources to help DV victims. On the other hand, the dude who played Atlas always seems uncomfortable, like he's being held hostage or something. Whenever Blake is talking, he awkwardly drinks whatever's in his hand and doesn't really say anything. If we take a look at Blake, she is actively dodging questions, acting aloof, and forgetting the subject matter, making it all about her and her outfits. I really do believe she thought she was having her 'Margot Robbie' moment, and that's what has ruined everything for everyone here. hi opiniyon. i am reaching out to request a Deep Dive of Anna Marie Tedler's memoir. i feel that CMBC was paid to call it bad. i need a youtuber to critically analyze it because i'm so invested in her journey as an artist.
I feel like I don’t really *get* to have an opinion on coho since I haven’t read any of her books. idk if I want to read any based on everything I’ve heard tho 💀
13:21 this is false, Z library was not taken down because of "CoHo fans". It had already been under investigation and a different author (Sarina Bowen) was actually the one who reported/submitted a complaint. Colleen Hoover already publically stated on Facebook that she supported college students getting free books on Zlib and would not have conspired to take it down.
Don't care about the drama, people should be worried that young women are so enamored of this woman's books, because it seems to me that she's sending problematic messages about relationships between men and women
The whole It Ends With Us Toxcity started with Colleen Hoover. Colleen Hoover doesn't seem to take DV seriously by the way she marketed her book. She marketed to tweens and teens in florals, coloring books, and without Trigger Warnings and age appropriateness. How irresponsible and misleading.
Well, trashing all her books without having even read one of them doesn‘t seem really fair to me. It‘s absolutely ok not liking them, but you can‘t form an opinion only reading snippets or what people write on the internet. BUT I do completly agree the way they promoted the movie is completly wrong. I‘m a 100% on Justin‘s side on this one.
Complaining about diversity not being present in a book is pretty dumb. I couldn't care less if they don't include a LGBTQ, latino, black, asian, etc. And I'm latino. I don't think that should be a complaint at all in any type of art. It's the author vision of their characters and it shouldn't be forced. However, the rest of your critique its well founded. Congrats on that, but reading the book would be the right step to make a critique about that.
I don't understand you people whats bad in a traumatic past of a character,i mean how are you even gonna enjoy a romance book without any rollercoasters,do you expect a sweet smooth flowy happy happy books for romance?!
Sorry as a black author I don’t care about race. I care about substance. I don’t “look for myself” in the characters I read. I actively seek out characters who are complex and multifaceted. It shouldn’t matter about diversity when you are reading a book. A show or a movie is a different story. Sincerely a South African woman who hates Coleen Hoover 😂
I hear you, but diverse stories often lead to new and interesting ideas. Without diversity things tend to grow stale, which seems to be why so many people have a bone to pick with Colleen Hoover. It's not just the fact that her characters are white, but that the stories themselves are stale, formulaic, and homogenous. I would also argue that the diversity of characters is in some cases important for realism. It Ends With Us is set in Boston, which is a super diverse city, so it is actually weird that there aren't any characters of color in the story.
As a chronic reader, I have stopped reading books because too many of them are similar to Colleen Hoover's books, everything on bookshelves are corn and abuse
I’ve literally never seen anyone get “hate” who spoke badly about Colleen Hoovers books. It’s the main opinion right now, don’t act like this is a niche opinion. It’s the in thing to hate on her right now. I agree with the controversy about the marketing of both the book and the movie - that’s it tho. I’ve read her books from the ages of 14-16 and they have majorly changed my perspective on some things. I’ve gained so much empathy for women in abusive relationships through reading it ends with us. The selectivity of what’s hated right now is so weird to me. There are so many badly written books in this genre that don’t get nearly as much criticism as hers. For what it is, these books have obviously struck a nerve with a lot of people, sparked the love for reading again and been a part of their teenage years. They aren’t ground breaking literature and some aspects do deserve critique but as usual on the internet everyone (who like you hasn’t even read her books?!) jumps on the hate train and I think that’s not deserved. A lot of this is merely speculation, nitpicking of a few single expressions and for what?
Maybe we're just in different internet circles, but people absolutely get hate from the Colleen Hoover fanbase. Her books are kind of like SJM books, where criticism isn't rare by any means, but the fanbase of said books is absolutely rabid. And while I agree that sometimes people are a bit too quick to jump on a hate train, this doesn't feel like that kind of a video? She's addressing the controversies surrounding Colleen Hoover, yes, but isn't dunking on the author or those who like her stuff.
On a separate note I'm glad that you personally got a lot out of this book, but there are plenty of people who feel the opposite, and their thoughts are just as valid as yours. Sure there are other crappy books in this genre, but as of now there are none that are as high profile as Colleen Hoover's. That's why the criticism feels disproportionate. It Ends With Us literally sold more copies than the Bible. And like anything else that gets super popular and is of questionable quality (take Fifty Shades or The Da Vinci Code), it's gonna take a lot of heat along with the love. That's not to say you're wrong for liking the book, it just means it's divisive, and that's fine. Oftentimes divisive books increase sales so I doubt Colleen has heartache over it.
"their baby died cuz they were laughing at his balls" man I can't wait to see what historians do with this one

hi opiniyon. i am reaching out to request a Deep Dive of Anna Marie Tedler's memoir. i feel that CMBC was paid to call it bad. i need a youtuber to critically analyze it because i'm so invested in her journey as an artist.
I feel like I don’t really *get* to have an opinion on coho since I haven’t read any of her books. idk if I want to read any based on everything I’ve heard tho 💀
Idk why anyone would think Colleen Hoover of all people would do a DV story justice without romanticizing it
13:21 this is false, Z library was not taken down because of "CoHo fans". It had already been under investigation and a different author (Sarina Bowen) was actually the one who reported/submitted a complaint. Colleen Hoover already publically stated on Facebook that she supported college students getting free books on Zlib and would not have conspired to take it down.
I will never forgive them for z Library. Never.
4:19 no wonder she tight with Blake

You’re telling me she was a professional social worker before she moved on to write books that romanticize abuse?????
I don't understand you people whats bad in a traumatic past of a character,i mean how are you even gonna enjoy a romance book without any rollercoasters,do you expect a sweet smooth flowy happy happy books for romance?!
Honestly idk that z library got taken door. Authors deserved to payed for their work. You’re not entitled to have it for free.
SHE'S WRITTEN 24 BOOKS???? 24??????
Yessss
As a chronic reader, I have stopped reading books because too many of them are similar to Colleen Hoover's books, everything on bookshelves are corn and abuse
No way Coho stans somehow contributed to zlib getting taken down 😭
I’ve literally never seen anyone get “hate” who spoke badly about Colleen Hoovers books.
WEAR YOUR FLORALS. Good Lordt 🫥🫥🫥
1:32 she was a teacher??? Her first book is about a teacher student relationship!!!! JAIL!!!
