8 years since release, next month! Amazingly it still looks better than some more popular titles on the market. I wonder if the developers have anything in the works or they are handcuffed by the engine

Yes, they did add some online social features. Not as simple as a party or group finder but you can host or join multiplayer sessions of up to 4 players. The main multiplayer search page lists all available servers in a list. Within the multiplayer search area you can see steam friends to join as well.
