I was washing dishes as I was listening to this, and the "pounding" comment got me to laugh such that I dropped one of my favorite mugs in the sink. Almost broke it... Damn you sir. =]. It was just out of no where and hilarious. Great review man, love your content!
@@vnshngpnt um, no. It isn't. If you try to buy the game today you'll see a notice that they have stopped development and are shutting off the servers. They even apologized that the remaining bugs, some of which are game breaking, can't be fixed.
I was in the same boat as you, but I ended up unlocking a node in the poe style skill tree thing that made my character ditch Willpower in exchange for producing Rage over time. It essentially makes it like any other ARPG. I also beefed it up with other nodes giving me massive amounts of Rage and by end game I pretty much never ran out unless it was an ongoing barrage of enemy waves.
I was just going to mention that node. Basically reverses the willpower/rage default where willpower is the default degen back to rage instead of the normal vice verse. I think there are passives that build rage on kill after that so you can basically perma melee or burn rage potions for long fights/high attack speed. I was making a pistol projectile chaining build and needed rage instead of willpower.
@AllTradesJackReviews Pretty good, but started to get very very grindy and difficult the deeper you got. I almost reached final endgame level. I think I stopped at 193 and final was 216. Can't recall now, it's been a few months.
@AllTradesJackReviews actually it's after 216, you then use accumulated skulls to unlock the rest of the GOF and even other stats...you become invincible...but to get there, you gotta know what you're doing and have luck with drops.
Keep in mind that this review was released 1 month after the games final update. All of the bugs are still there, the servers crashed only 2 weeks ago as they are no longer maintained. The console version has most of its features inaccessible because they used the PC's mouse UI but never added mouse support.
Good review. Did you knew that there are red and purple rarity gear that unlock some spells to be used by who wears that gear? My favorite is the sheild that allow you to use any sacred damage type spells regardless that it is bound for guns, dagger or catalysts. Just unlock stats change on a spell to make it deal sacred dmage and there you go you can now use it. Also catalysts have their drawbacks..they are slow to build up willpower and have reduced damage output from spells. While staves regen will power much faster and add a 30% up 50% with the best staves.
It is ok game, my only gripe with it is that once you finish the main story, the difficulty go up by quite a notch. It can become quite impossible on some builds, and barely menageable on very powerful builds. Still it's a very challenging game.
I enjoyed Wolcen, it is very easy though, especially if you go full mage, with a staff. Feeding Swarm + Annihilation + Solarfall, and you are unstoppable.
I enjoyed playing this game with my dad in '21. Just came back cause we saw the game was shutting down its MP. I had to restart my client twice now. The first time was because my dad entered a cut scene while I was looking at the Gates. My mouse refused to register in game. Restarting fixed this. The second time was fighting a boss in the necropolis. We "beat" the boss then it kamakazied and caused us to restart the fight. The notable difference was, the first "bugged" fight didn't have any boss abilities.
There are a few things I really like about Wolcen. It's visuals, the skill trees and wheel, and just how it feels to play a wizard with a gun. Pistol + catalyst is such fun, IMO. It's like the D4 Rogue and Sorc, but faster, more agile, and just MORE. Also can summon a minion to tank. But I had it bug out on me in Act 3...Making it unplayable for about a month until another patch dropped and seems to have fixed it. Now, I'm playing D4. I might (should) go back and play more Wolcen, and I probably will...But not now.
It definitely seems like the bugs kept a lot of people from playing the game or finishing it. I was at least able to finish the base game before I ran into any issues, but I have heard plenty of other experiences from people playing since it launched.
and a curiosity as to why this dog will follow this random stranger into the bowls of hell, but mine will run at the sound of a broom sweeping the floor. 😂🤣😂
How did you miss the node in the Gates of Fate which enables you to generate Rage instead of Willpower? There's a node immediately after it which boosts ability damage by 100% when above 750 Rage too, which is incredibly easy to maintain. So there is already a solution to the Rage/Willpower issue you had.
Interesting just two months ago, when i did my review of the game the technical issues were crazy and even partially the same as three years ago. Effects and Loot-models went visually missing in Act 3, sound bugged out and the endboss (after they introduced the last act) had a gamebreaking bug that caused a crash everytime when he used a specific ability. (Luckily you could get around that by editing a file, what wouldnt be possible if i had played Online) And tbh in general when i look at your gameplay the lag between attack and hit detection looks sometimes really bad. So i think it really might have been better to go for the offline mode. ;D
You know, I heard that same experience from my buddy who tried it last year. My experience was definitely different, but those bugs may still be in there. Maybe I just got lucky and only got a few of them lol! But yeah, offline mode would have definitely been better... the lag at first was absolutely terrible until I figured out that it was connecting to an EU server while I'm in West Coast USA.
@@AllTradesJackReviews Good for you then. :D The worst thing for me was simply that i knew the effects-bug already from release and its so downturning to see that they still exist several years after that. I bought this game when it came out. Multi stage bosses are annoying to me, but i can usually tolerate 2 stages at most. The boss i was fighting had at least 3 stages and i had its health down to nearly 0 and then it DC'd on me making me have to restart it. I deleted the game right there and never went back. I deleted the game because my build (health globes explosion) would make the servers go crazy laggy, inducing rollbacks, rubber banding, desync and all kind of glitches (especially in mp, for both my friends and I). I came back to try the latest patch, they reset talent tree and levels for all players, moved equipped gear into a special stash, it was disapointing but not the end of the world. Cool review Game is great, one of the best modern ARPGs to play. Obviously it’s not live service game, but it has great campaign and enough character customisation for few playthroughs. Had much more fun in my 100h in Wolcen than in D4 or Last Epoch. There are just enough fun details in character building and customisation to keep playing, and trying again with different character

I gave this game a shot a couple of years ago and it killed my gaming laptop. Years later I was happy to see it works well on a steam deck, though I think I had to use a Jsaux fan to keep the thing from heating up to a breaking point. I had a good time. I probably had a handful of crashes, and I had to manipulate a JSON file to get to the end game after I beat the final boss because something didn't trigger correctly at the time. Quite good review otherwise, but you kinda skipped over the awesome music and visuals, and didn't talk much about loot and endgame. This is a good review for casual ARPG players, but not worth much to an ARPG grinder as it seems you quit at level 43. Is that even the end of the campaign? I haven't played it myself.
It definitely is a casual/new player perspective! I believe I was around 50 or so after finishing the main story to the point where I got a screen saying “the story will continue later” or something like that. Then it popped me out into a mission based campaign system. That’s when it looked like the grinder starts. You can get all the way up to level 216 I hear though it gets extremely grindy (even for an arpg).

its an ARPG they all see to have the same kind of endgame. you do the "endgame" activity then you do over and over again to get better gear and do the activity (endgame) faster. that pretty much all games like this. Diablo, POE, Grim Dawn, etc
I've been a wolcen supporter since it was called umbra.. yes it's still got some bugs, and it still needs some polish, but honestly there's not another ARPG around that can compare with wolcens combat. Last Epoch is a close second. POE, D4 the skil bar is full of buffs/ shields, and you're spamming one maaaaybe two skills. In wolcen I get to use 5 skills in almost every encounter, ather jump into or out of a area, then Dodge roll to a new location and blast away. Wolcen doesn't get credit for it's skills and combat at all.
