Several years ago my close friends son tried to commit suicide. He was having serious mental health issues and had to spend weeks in the children's hospital psych ward. Her husband worked a union job and had so-so insurance. She calculated how much she was going to have to pay and it was more than $50k. I knew the hospital well and told her she should call and ask if they have any programs for hardship because I qualified for one once and not only did they zero my bill, my child was allowed free medical at that hospital for 3 months. At first, she wouldn't do it because she thought she wouldn't qualify since they had a regular job and insurance. When she was finally persuaded to call, they zeroed the whole bill. (We lived in a tech city where lots of people donated to that hospital.) It never hurts to ask.

Just wanted to correct the last thing. As of July 2022, any medical bills or medical debt except strictly cosmetic, can no longer affect your credit score. They can show on your credit report just as a debt but legally it can no longer bring down your credit score. Any bills previous to July 2022, some are removed from affecting your credit score and others will unfortunately stay. But any new ones can't bring down your credit

@kiyabland5587 I had something similar, but my bill was from before 2022. What I did was ask for an itemized list for the bill, and then disputed the bill. If you're speaking with collections, ask who owns ur debt (dr's office, hospital, or the collections agency). Then, ask to dispute your bill. This will put a pause on collections. You don't need to tell them a reason (tell them as little as possible), but my reason was bc they charged me 2x for something, and they told me one price before, and billed me 6x that price.
The dr's office still owned my bill, so I had to call the dr's office for negotiations. They initially said they would not lower the bill, but after a few years, they rescinded my debt from collections and offered me a lower amt to pay. But at that point, it'd already been 4 years, so I decided just to wait 3 more years for it to drop off my credit report (collections record gets removed off after 7 years). One thing to note is that if you pay off collections normally, the record updates on ur credit report, so the 7 yr stain starts over. I'm not sure how the new law changes all of this, but you can do some research into it.
If you only have a few more years left, I would just try to wait it out. Also, document everything when going thru this process. This way, if they try to bring you to court, you have documented proof that you tried to pay. I hope this helps. Good luck!

Retired medical personnel here and I'm here to tell you my RBFF scrutinize everything if you don't know what that item is look it up if you're still questioning it try looking it up and putting medical billing definition. Some hospitals had charged over $100 for a box of Kleenex that wasn't opened. So go over everything make notations on the bill of hey I didn't have this or I didn't use this I'm not going to pay for it don't be afraid to stand up for what's right either and let them know I'm not going to pay for this I did not use this and then also let them know hey I want to get it taken care of. Question everything not just on a bill in life. Questions are only a bad thing if you know the answer you're going to give is a lie. Once again happy New Year everybody.

The thing that pissed me off is we had budgeted the care and had enough waiting for the one we couldn’t plan. Yet it still went to collections. I swear those places just assume they can’t get paid before even trying to collect and just sell off the debt for less than what was owed. Shit if you are giving discounts on your service let me pay the full amount and get the discount. The system is so fucked lol.

Rich people don't negotiate medical bills and fewer even look at their bills. They can afford health insurance. They pay the difference when the insurance company sends them the explanation of benefits which settles out their deductible and co-insurance. Poor people negotiate bills because they don't have personal insurance policies or a job with a company that does.

After 5 years those negative medical bills can be dropped off your report. Push hard for charity care. The Attorney General in WA State sued 1 of the mega conglomerates because they were refusing to offer charity care.

I’m from Canada 🇨🇦, so one time I had a black out and seizure and got taken to the hospital. I had to stay the night in the hospital, my total bill was $100 , which was for the ambulance. If this was in the States how expensive would it have been ?

Also (medical student here) if it's not an emergency, express to your doctor that cost is an issue when discussing treatment options. They may be able to recommend/prescribe less expensive meds, skip a few labs/diagnostics that may not be actually necessary but are recommended under the CYA policy (cover your ass), etc. Doctors do not actually want you to go into debt to take care of yourself. That's healthcare admin. Healthcare admin sucks.

This. My son got appendicitis when we didn't have insurance. We told the doctor at urgent care that we didn't have insurance, and he called the hospital and let them know. They arranged for us to check in at the front desk (after hours patients generally have to go through the ER which adds expense). They did the surgery within a few hours, so we wouldn't be paying for him to sit in a hospital room until the next day which shortened our stay. I think they skipped some pre-imaging too.
