So these processes were going on at an accelerated pace anyway ... For this reason, the war in Ukraine actually began. But Russia did not pull the fight with NATO. It's rather sad that NATO is already standing right on the border and preparing to attack Russia. If Russia loses in Ukraine, NATO's nuclear missiles and air defenses will be all over Russia's border. It scares me.
@@markdexter6338 Why would it be? Less likely to be a burden to anyone, than most European countries. Finland takes care of it's business, unlike many others.
Remember, NATO is a defensive alliance and exists only because of Russia's habit of attacking its neighbors. Finland and Sweden only joined after the Ukraine war, their people were opposed to it before then.
@@Palilalia22 for me, l hope to visit Finland and also Sweden, maybe next year. Congratulations again, so happy to see you guys in the Alliance now. You will help NATO for the defense of the baltic states . Unity is Strength
My take on this is: It was not so much that they would not have wanted into NATO, but didn't dare to apply for it because that might have provoked reaction from Russia => for all the years, the moment Finland would have applied for Nato membership, it would be vulnerable to Russian attacks "to prevent it" - very much like it happened to Ukraine. However, when it became visible that Russia was not as overwhelming as the world had thought AND most of their resources bound in Ukraine, AND USA and UK basically offering security guarantees for the interim time, this was the opportunity.
One might wonder what things would look like if Zelensky would have fled and the Ukrainian army surrendered on day four. I think you are right and that is another reason that the western world and especially Finland absolutely owes it to help Ukraine for as long as it takes. BTW the winter war was similar in that respect, Finland was a young state that twenty years earlier had a devastating civil war (whites against communist reds). Hence Stalin expected Finland to have internal discord and surrender within a week or two. That did not happen and although we fought bravely, we were more or less alone in our fight. Therefore now with Nato: "never again alone".
Common opinion was that there was no threat to anyone in the this part of the Northern-Europe. Many viewed this passiveness as a way to keep the region stable, and were proud of this heritage since many major deals had been done in Helsinki at the time of Cold war. So nothing new, until Russia started a war against Ukraine. There was a pattern emerging where land craps were more evident, and then came threats about nuclear weapon strikes if others were to intervene. Many got very angry and thus raised their voices - one country cannot occupy others just because they have nuclear weapons. Winter war and continuation war came to mind for most, pitty for Ukraine, and the Finns like Swedes and Estonians demanded a punishment for Russia, support for Ukraine. Nato membership is in my view a revenge, but now I don't need to follow news articles about those Russian clowns.
@@Chris-pf8by Exactly. I think it makes a lot of sense and that we didn't apply earlier was primarily because fear of provoking Russia (and not getting helped, like in Winter war). ("We" as in Finland, I was born in Germany but I live here for 20+ years). Last three times Russia pulled this stunt (Georgia, Tschetschnia and Crimea) the West stood idly by. Ukraine made all the difference, world history will look very different because of this. Russia becoming a failed state, for starters. Thankfully the West this time helped, and that is because it was not over within 7 days. Yes, we owe Ukraine a lot. Everything we can give in economic and military aid, I would say. For numerous reasons: 1) The world will be a better place, and 2) : USA, UK and Russia guaranteed Ukraine safety when they gave up their nuclear weapons. From that, US and UK are IMO obligated to do everything they can. Promises made, promised kept? I wish "we" (western countries in general) would do more, but at the other hand, as much as they do stand united so far that's still more that I would have expected from EU.
@@iam5085 Yes. It was best way to keep things stable. I know Finland has put enormous effort into it to be on good terms with Russia. Revenge? Perhaps. I'd rather say: You reap what you sow. My guess is Putin gambled that it would go same way as last three times, that things would be over within days or weeks, before "the West" gets their act together. But he must (should) have known, that if his attempt fails and the West wouldn't stand by, that on the long run Russia can't overcome the combined West's economic and military might. Looks like he got also wrong information about his army's power and the mood in Ukraine ("welcome them as liberators") ... that's what you get in a culture of corruption and yes-sayers. He gambled, and he lost. The suffering of Ukrainians and consequences for the whole world overall are catastrophic. I hope that at least at the end of it things will be better - Ukraine becoming integrated into the west faster than it could have ever happened under normal circumstances. A high price, paid in blood, yes. And, perhaps, after all of it, Russia on the way of becoming a democratic state? One can hope. It's a shame -- with their natural resources, they could be a prosperous country.
Well, kinda. but not exactly. Finland didn't want to unnecessarily provoke Russia since there was still certain balance in Europe. But when it beacame clear Russia didn't care about "balance" netiher did Finland. Overall, it was never really about wanting or not wanting to join, it was just solely about what's best way to prevent conflict. In fact, Russian miliatary inaptitude is just reason not to join.
@@anitagorse9204 lol. Do you people even know why Russia is invading the Ukraine? Were you under the impression that Putin woke up one morning and decided he was going to take back all of the Soviet Union territory? My goodness, would it hurt to at least do some private research on the matter?
@@eufrosniad994 we know the story.. but deep somewhere.. his bigger picture is the restoration of USSR block. In one of his rhetorics early days of the war, he said there was "no Ukraine" but one "Mother Russia" and "Ukraine has always been part of Russia ". Do you need any further explanation on such statements bro
@@anitagorse9204 Let's look realistic. Russia is struggling with Ukraine, the chances of an attack on Finland are minimal. In fact, NATO is preparing a springboard for an attack on Russia from Finland. When NATO develops a sufficiently serious missile defense system to deal with Russian nuclear missiles, the Russian authorities will be faced with a choice: either you give us power or we destroy the entire Russian infrastructure.
@@emmanayoemmanuel1861 Well, if your main points of evidence for your assertion is that he made such statements, I think we require further explanation from you for making such bad conclusions, yes? For an example, suppose one decides to invade Ukraine for a different reason. Would it not then be reasonable to point out how Ukraine has been part of Russia in some way throughout history when convincing those around you? It seems like you discard all such obvious conclusions, and even refuse to take the man at face value for what he repeatedly warn would be their reason for taking action i.e., NATO expansion. Why is that? Is it because the media lead you to form such a judgement while you fell for it, “bro”?
Also great for Sweden. Even if Turkey never let's them become a full member, the only geographic routes to Sweden from Russia are through NATO members or through waters shared with NATO members. Attempting to invade Sweden with an amphibious landing through disputed waters would be ridiculous
Finland has already fought with the Russian Empire, and no longer wants to. I'm sorry that Ukrainians were sent to Finland to fight (We were under occupation
No hard feelings, Ukrainians went and had a good think about this stuff and started to reform. It's sad that Putin felt Ukrainians becoming civilized and independent free thinking people was threat to his power. Many Finns left to fight in Ukraine and there are lot of voluntary aid collection efforts going on in addition to 14 official state aid packages. So let this show and remind you and all your countrymen that there is no bad blood between out two nations.
But I'll bet Finland wants returned the 9% of its territory Russia stole during the Winter War. Since we're re-writing history pretty much everywhere, I think this is a topic for the United Nations to take up, right after they expel Russia from the obviously misnamed "Security Counsel".

Nothing like this in Russia
So these processes were going on at an accelerated pace anyway ... For this reason, the war in Ukraine actually began. But Russia did not pull the fight with NATO. It's rather sad that NATO is already standing right on the border and preparing to attack Russia. If Russia loses in Ukraine, NATO's nuclear missiles and air defenses will be all over Russia's border. It scares me.
Bless you all. Peace from 🇫🇮🫶

Love the Fins from UK.
Lets hope Fins won't be a burden for NATO in the future.
@@markdexter6338 Why would it be? Less likely to be a burden to anyone, than most European countries. Finland takes care of it's business, unlike many others.

Putin should be awarded the Recruiter of the year award. I don't know how he managed to do the exact opposite of what he wanted. What a genius!
Congrats to the people of Finland!Welcome!
Remember, NATO is a defensive alliance and exists only because of Russia's habit of attacking its neighbors. Finland and Sweden only joined after the Ukraine war, their people were opposed to it before then.
Welcome Finland

@@krumel20 Estonia defended Finland in the 1940's, now it is our turn.
First Valtteri's mullet, now the whole country joins NATO. Finland is unstoppable.
Congratulations 🇫🇮 & welcome to the clan from the UK
Perfect time for Finland to join NATO. The risk is too high for the Finns if they did not.
Yep, Finland was for sure on Russian invade list. After ex USSR regions, of course.
Sweden has already been invaded. In 50 years it will be part of the Ummah.
Yep, great defence for our northern border 👍🏻💪
Sweden has already been invaded. Russia doesn't even have to lift a finger, Sweden is already conquered 🤣
RuSSia is currently known for doing ridiculous things.

@@jjuanmarin 'Occupied' by a free and fair democracy?
