Ian Gillan had so much versatility in his vocal performances . He was never able to explorer it professionally and he and his fans were cheated. Those were the days when record companies had creative control over the artists. Music In My Head is a superior example. It sounds like a hit soundtrack from a movie , an excellent example of his singing POP ability . He had the vocal ability to go where ever he wanted . This album reminds me of another former Rock lead singer who went on to have a very distinctive solo career after the drummer passed away and the band couldn't continue. Ian's performance at the Royal Albert Hall in Deep Purples Concerto is another AMAZING performance , as well as his singing with Luciano Pavarotti . He was probably the most versatile Rock singer ever . Long Sing you Ian Gillan .

Dear Kevin. I appreciated very much your message. I have been a huge fan of Ian, for many many years now. I agree, he never knew exactly what to do with his fantastic voice and the worst of all, he lost part of it because of his bad behaviour, since the end of the 70's. In my opinion, he never took care of his voice, he never worked on it and he pushed too hard on it. Yes he his a hero, a true rocker. But beeing a rocker doesn't mean you don't have to work on your voice, to be careful on it. Ray Fenwick, who worked with him during those post deep purple years sessions, told "he'd make a great rock'n'roll singer, going down the Tom Jones route". I agree. Those recordings prove it. You talked about this other great singer (who must not be named). I'll admit that this singer was also a great rocker, but he still have more or less the same voice today. He took care of his voice. Ian can't sing anymore like he used to. Not to mention the high notes of Child in Time. In these 1974 recordings, his voice is simply perfect. Not far from what he did during the early seventies with deep purple and also Jesus Christ Superstar. Maybe it was his vocal route? I can't imagine where he'd be if he had ridden this route further. Of course, what he did during the 80's with Gillan (the band) is fantastic. Totaly underrated. Maybe the best post deep purple solo band. I love all the albums. Still my favourites. But he ruined his fantastic voice beacause of his bad behaviour during those years. He pushed too hard on it (the Sabbath year is so black for his voice!!!), Often drunk, always smoking. But that's his life. And he is still there. Still alive. Still singing. Still my hero. I have an infinite respect for him (even with what I wrote). But I'm sure that if he had had a better understanding of his vocal potential, he could be concidered as one of the greatest singer of all time, as people say about this other famous singer....

Sofa King: There's a parallel between Ian and David Essex, at least with this kind of material - and they looked fairly similar. I actually prefer Gillan's solo career to Robert Plant's, overall. He's had zero support from the media, in contrast to Plant.

By 72 and 73 Ian reached the peak as a singer and IMO no other rock singer ever matched him. Up untill Born Again he was unmatched as a rock (and other genres) singer, his Gillan years were amazing. In Perfect Strangers you notice the transition the the more "nasal" kind of vocal he kept. Since then, i think he highlighted in Toolbox, amazing vocals and on the Purpendicular and Abandon era it was the last time his vocals were great, Total Abandon is an amazing live album/concert. I like his vocals since then but they aren't as strong as before !

While I probably wasn't ready for it back in '74 (I was 17 then), this collection is a great display of his talent and versatility.
Had this been released as an album, I would've bought it, but I'm sure I wouldn't have appreciated it right away (being a Purple-maniac).

Wow! He has always been my favorite, but this a surprise. I've only known his "Deep Purple voice". I know he had the range but had know idea of the versatility. He had such a rare gift, it's a shame he abused it with smoking and drinking. As a result we only have about 30 great songs or a bit more where he was at his peak. Also a damn shame he quit DP in the 70's. I can't help but wonder what they could have done if they closed that decade together.

In Rock, Fireball, Machine Head, WDWTWA, Child in Time (album) Clear Air Turbulence, Scarabus, Japanese album, Mr. Universe, Glory Road, Magic, Future Shock, and Born Again are all albums with Prime Gillan (Pre-Sabbath voice injury). Funnily enough, I'm really not that fond of Ian's DP years, I've always gravitated more toward his solo career albums a lot more. Clear Air Turbulence has always been my favourite album from his catalogue. The Cherkazoo album is a genuine musical treat that showcases his versatility as a singer. If you can find it, BUY IT!

Who cares what Blackmore would have thought? This was Ian Gillan after Deep Purple had split in 1973, so what RB thought would not have bothered IG one iota!
Maybe Gillan didn't like Since You've Been Gone or the
J L Turner American sounding Rainbow?

No handwritten lyrics for the first verse of A Little Share Of Plenty? I could never understand what he sings in the last line, "I think I'll.... ?? if the form of life is higher"? Some help my dudes, this has been driving me wild for years!

Sorry. I do not have the lyrics of this song. You know, I'm French. It is not easy for me. But I have the impression that in the end of this verse, he says: the former life is higher. On the CD "Cherkazoo", only the second and third verses are handwritten. I did not find anything on the internet.
