and I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but that's ex Flying Buritto Brother/ ex Eagles bernie leadon on electric guitar standing behind Emmylou. that's pretty F'ing cool.
You could tell he was nervous at the start (he admitted it later in interviews) but once he got that "high and lonesome" through the nose back in his sound, he nailed it....and who wouldn't be nervous, how would you like trying to follow GP on this one singing with the legendary woman who was there at the birth of it....
This is awesome. I think it's funny though how Ryan Adams starts off sounding like himself and less than halfway through it he falls right into sounding like Gram.
ryan's coolness score just went up 90% with me ... totally impressed with his job on this classic song... maybe theres hope for the younger generation yet ..
Here is a great live version of Gram Parson's song "Return of the Grievous Angel" performed by Ryan Adams and Emmylou Harris. Song was originally performed by Parsons and Harris. If you like Gram Parsons, there is an album titled "Return of the Grievous Angel: A tribute to Gram Parsons." Featured artists include Whiskeytown (Ryan Adams), Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Elvis Costello, Wilco, Pretenders, etc. Worth checking out.
Anyone who gets to sing with Emmylou Harris is immediately elevated to a whole new level. She can make a career and by her doing this song with Ryan Adams it immediately gives him real country credibility.
We're talking about two separate people here . I don't think Ryan is trying to be Gram . I think he appreciates Gram's music , as do a lot of us , and he does an amazing cover on Gram's tunes .
there isnt one person when i play ryan adams that doesnt say wow who is this? rap fans, pop fans, country fans, his talent is undeniable emmy lou would probably ask you to leave if you were at her party.....lighten up, lifes too short
It doesn't sound like it was too great being a trust fund child. His parents certainly were a selfish lot. Leaving him to deal with the pieces of garbage they left behind for him to deal with. Escape in those times was the way to go, as in our times. Addiction grabs hold, and the rest is history. Rest now Gram, you did good.
@Sidrat54 Seriously? Cold Roses? Jacksonville City Nights? Not to mention country songs among his other non-country albums (Pearls on a String comes to mind). Ryan has always been alt country. Hell, he's more country than 99% of the songs you hear on a 'country' radio station today. How could Gram Parson's not be an influence?
Hey Zimmy. Not tryiing to correct you but I think the person you think is Mark Knopfler (unless I'm missing something) is Bernie Leadon, lead guitarist and banjo player from The Eagles. But glad you enjoyed. Ryan singing a Gram Parson classic with Emmylou in the background is heavenly.
Yes, Gram was a rich boy and didn't need to work, but he was still talented. If he hadn't been a hopeless drug addict, he would have soared to the top of his genre by about 1975. Agreed on today's 'Country' music. It's disgusting. It's NOT country, but more like bad rock music with cowboy hats.
Can anyone please explain how she sings the harmony on this song? It sounds very distinctively Emmylou, but i can't put my finger on what she does - harmony-wise...
Shes sings a fifth above and follows the melody. Sometimes Emmy sings a counterpoint for harmony. If you dont' know what that means contact a reputable singing teacher.
far more gifted? i will give adams credit he did a nice job on this song but i don't agree with you about being far more gifted than gram, and 2 or 3 original songs you must not have really studied parsons much, 99 percent of the people that know music would disagree with you, but you have your own opinion and i have mine, i just dont agree with you on this one, take care
You realize that Gram was a spoiled trust fund kid right? I love Gram but neither he nor Ryan were stuck on one type of music, I love both artists and HATE country music today.

Any duet w/ Emmylou is great. Her ability to harmonize w/ anyone is unmatched...
This is awesome. I think it's funny though how Ryan Adams starts off sounding like himself and less than halfway through it he falls right into sounding like Gram.
I just hope Adams knew what an honor was bestowed upon him singing this with Emmylou.
Never in a mi,,ion years d would have thought that ANYONE even WITH EmmyLou..could ever adaquately cover this song!.Kudos
It takes balls to take on this incredible Gram tune. Adams nails it. Note Emmylou's smile near the end of the song. She approved. Me too.
I can't get over how good this is.

Wanna learn how to harmonize? Listen to this clip about 450 times. Emmy will teach you.

just once in my life, i need a woman to look at me the way e.h. looks at who ever she is harmonizing with.
Ryan Adams is a cowboy now? Cool. Way to go Emmylou and Ryan. Gram Parson still rules after all these years!
November 5 - Happy birthday to both Ryan and Gram! Perfect video for today.
what makes this song is the song.
And vice versa, doubly so. Ryan is the most gifted artist in the in the 45 year history of alt country.
Ryan is a true artist - at his best in this genre. Confidence and talent are an amazing combination.
Thank God for Gram and Ryan and Miss Emmy.
His hair looks like he just took out the curlers;0) Love him and love this!
Ryan nailed it.... well done.
Fantasitc cover. Gram would be proud.
Gram's last two albums had some amazing original songs on them as well :)
I've read in interviews that he was nervous as hell, and rightfully so! You can see it with the first few lines.
I love Gram. But Ryan has some great tunes too. Open your mind a little.
You'd be nervous too if you had to perform a country song on stage with Emmylou Harris and Bernie Leadon. Great job.
Love this version. Ryan Adams absolutely does it justice. And Mark Knoepfler playing guitar too.
One of my favourite Emmylou songs.
there isnt one person when i play ryan adams that doesnt say wow who is this? rap fans, pop fans, country fans, his talent is undeniable emmy lou would probably ask you to leave if you were at her party.....lighten up, lifes too short
Whiskeytown. Nuff said.
Oh My Sweet Carolina........'nuf said
Wonderful.

Thank you so much for posting this.
@ClassicRocker30 This was a few years before Gold, before Heartbreaker even. It was filmed in September of 1999.

Great comment! SO true!
@UncleLudie That's Buddy Miller on the left, in the ball cap.
...and a good saloon in every single town....
Gram is the man
Amazing!
How the hell did this get any thumbs down
Ryan at is best :)

Looks like Bernie Leadon on lead - who else is in the band?
epic
lol somebody's never heard the Whiskeytown records.
100% true
damn, that was nice gram...........
@mkbcoolman Thank you for liking real country music and not the "99%" of trash as you said.
@knmsondre Im thinking this is post gold. Would make sense ryan was a bigger name after gold and could get on television more easily.
Can anyone please explain how she sings the harmony on this song? It sounds very distinctively Emmylou, but i can't put my finger on what she does - harmony-wise...
When is this? Around Heartbreaker? 1999, 2000?
Looks like Emmylou has a little crush on this young buck! ;)
@whisky2roxy She is maybe the greatest backup singer of all time, which sounds dismissive, but is meant as a complement.
Shes sings a fifth above and follows the melody. Sometimes Emmy sings a counterpoint for harmony. If you dont' know what that means contact a reputable singing teacher.
dont know who ryan adams is, the part he is singing isnt particularly difficult. what makes this song is emmylou, that voice is an original!
Show me one song of Ryan Adams that is half as good as this song
even rich trust fund folks have tragedy in their life. You do know his name wasn't Gram, right?
far more gifted? i will give adams credit he did a nice job on this song but i don't agree with you about being far more gifted than gram, and 2 or 3 original songs you must not have really studied parsons much, 99 percent of the people that know music would disagree with you, but you have your own opinion and i have mine, i just dont agree with you on this one, take care
