    Oh how I wish choirs / singers / clergy in other liturgical traditions sang this well and correctly; especially the clergy. I am Anglo-Catholic in the tradition of men and boy choirs. What a shame that many traditions are now falling into a great apostacy. I love and admire the Russian Orthodox Church and pray that they keep their great traditions and especially the music going as is! So red blooded, fully human and with total conviction, full commitment and spiritual - all in one. GOD save Russia and all true Christian; especially from the great trial and turmoil to come.

    Old Russian was very difficult to read...
    coming back, or really never spiritually left the orthodox church
    In my church it felt empty.
    Not a place to intersect with God.
    It was cliquish, political, a business...people weren't necessarily decent.
    This excerpt does touch my soul... priest, ritual, holy passages... makes me want to pray here!!!

    What a terrific upload! The 'ancient Russian hymnody' referred to here is exactly that - the ancient znamienny and diemiestvienny chants - here sung in full according to the Obychod (the book of canonical church chant) at the Divine Liturgy of St. john Chisostom. These are original medieval Russian chants sung as they would have been sung at the time of Alexander Nevsky. They would have also been sung by the hold congregation. The singing tradition was preserved by the 'Old Believers' (followers of the Old Rite or 'staroobriadovtsy') so fortunately, the tradition was never lost. One of the best things I've ever seen on youtube!

    This is so interesting, thank you for posting! So, if I understand correctly, this is a reconstruction of liturgical repertoire of the 17th century with a commentary during the ceremony. That commitment to preservation of repertoire and education of the congregation is admirable, my heartfelt congratulations.
    It’s so curious to see antiphonal singing and instances that actually sound similar to Gregorian chant that I recognise from my Catholic background, and moments that sound closer to the music I have heard here on UA-cam in Greek and other Orthodox traditions, I guess that speaks a lot to the common root from which all these practices sprung from.
    Also, as professional opera singer, what glorious singing, especially from the basses...

    I so admire and love my Orthodox Slav brothers. You have retained such liturgical purity and practices. Seeing the piety of the people is inspirational. I am a Eastern Catholic saddened by what the Roman Rite has become; a Protestant gathering. I sincerely hope and pray that all my Orthodox brothers may very soon return to communion with Rome. You needn't sacrifice any of the beauty of your liturgy, customs, hierarchy, etc.
    With love and hope, God bless us

      Petrus Josephus Oh well, again a "catholic" trying to express his admiration and love for us and our customs, while also implying that it is us who abandoned the church and its traditions. We have retained the true christian faith and this is the reason why our liturgy is truly still a liturgy to god. The church of Rome has unfortunately failed to do so. No scholastic theoretizising can undo this. You cannot serve the pope and the Lord! Took me a while to realize this and become orthodox.

      well said! very well said!
      the false flattery of papists, whether they be latin 'traditionalists', novus ordo's, or the saddest case these *_UNIATES_*, are the sort of duplicity that Eastern Orthodox spirituality abhors as the lies of the devil. these papists and ecumenists have nothing better to do than troll Orthodox videos because the papacy has destroyed nearly every vestige of ancient Christianity that it used to once possess.
      _"19And a certain scribe came, and said unto him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. 20And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head"_ - Matthew 8_19, 20

      Petrus Josephus you asking the Eastern Orthodox Church to embrace papism is asking the chaste bride of Christ to commit spiritual adultery and fornication with the man-made papism.
      to you papists and ecumenists: we Orthodox not so politely say NO THANKS! WE ARE *NOT* INTERESTED IN YOUR POPE.

      Godly Mathew I'm glad His All Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew doesn't hate us Catholics the way many of his flock do. The devil loves division, God hates it. It's NOT false flattery. Many of us Catholics love our Orthodox brothers and sisters and pray daily for reconciliation. One flock, one Shepherd.

    • @oldwest517
      @oldwest517 8 років тому +6

      Petrus Josephus The reason that the Roman Rite has become a Protestant gathering (in many cases, there is far more dignity and theological fidelity to the Christian faith in many Protestant services) is precisely because of Roman papal ideas -- namely, that any change, no matter how ugly, irreverent, and taken from thin air, is OK as long as one is in communion with Rome and as long as the pope doesn’t outright condemn it (thus tacitly approving those changes.)
      And make no mistake about it, every pope from Vat II on fully approves of ALL of the abuses visited upon the Roman Rite in the name of the spirit of Vat II -- after all, they have the full authority of the magisterium and none of them lifted a finger to try to clean house.
      Why on earth would we Orthodox want anything to do with an ecclesiology that created the travesty that is the modern Roman Rite? The only reason why the eastern rites aren’t just as bad is because your criteria for authenticity are ultimately outside the Roman church? The whole purpose of Uniatism is to try to entice Orthodox Christians into communion with Rome by giving them something that looks like Orthodoxy even though it isn’t. So you can’t change much -- even though many in communion with Rome would like you to. But not because anything in Roman theology or ecclesiology prevents you from creating your own eastern-flavored “Protestant gatherings."

    Liturgic question: I am curious that during the Trisagion when a bishop is serving, I have seen a variety of practices. 1. The bishop using the candles and cross vs using trikiri and dikiri is one variation. Also, the bishop saying "Lord Lord look down from heaven" 3x, in various directions. Sometimes I see it only said 1x with quietly saying "Holy God,... etc" after the choir responds and then continues" Holy Mighty," etc. Is there a reason for the variations?

    Could veey easily done without the docent tour guide deacon. It's the Liturgy, do we really need an unending exhortation throughout, even the presiding bishop seems to be possessing his soul in patience with resignation and some difficulty. Besides, it's all the same kind of pious cant one is altogether too used to in most Russian tradition churches. I know there are good preachers in the tradition; where are they?

    I wonder what the caption "Divine Liturgy in ancient Russian hymnody" means. Does it mean that the language of the priests and the chorus is Church Slavonic or or Old Church Slavonic ? I don't speak Russian so any help will be appreciated.

    • @StJohntheBaptistOrthodoxChurch
      @StJohntheBaptistOrthodoxChurch  9 років тому +6

      George Sigalos The language is Church Slavonic (there is only one Church Slavonic language). But the musical settings are of Russian origin. They've been slightly re-composed to add additional harmonies. (the original settings were only a single melody line with no harmonies written)

    • @bishopgeorgeschaefer2181
      @bishopgeorgeschaefer2181 8 років тому +7

      George Sigalos It means: in ancient Znamenny chant.

    • @oldwest517
      @oldwest517 8 років тому +5

      St John the Baptist Orthodox Church I believe that at least some of this music is Demestvenny chant -- early Russian polyphony that predates modern Russian harmonization. Much of the unfamiliar sounding harmony heard here is not music "re-composed to add additional harmonies," but rather represents original harmonizations from the 1500s and 1600s that pre-date the Nikonian reforms. And some of the harmonized settings are quite simply "modern" Russian chant settings that blend very well with the older music being reintroduced into liturgical use here.

    • @StJohntheBaptistOrthodoxChurch
      @StJohntheBaptistOrthodoxChurch  8 років тому +1

      oldwest517 You are, of course, correct. But I decided not to make the answer more complex than it needed to be. Most are unaware of Dmestvenny chant altogether, and all ancient Russian chants are simply known to be "Znamenny", simply because their notation was done in Kryuki. Even several Old Believer friends of mine are rather ignorant of the Dmestvenny settings, as they don't use them in their parishes that I know of.

    • @hypnobuddha1
      @hypnobuddha1 8 років тому

      +oldwest517 It would have been nice if they would have stuck to the Demestvenny style of chanting during the "O Come Let Us Worship" rather than defaulting into the typical harmonized melody that is often used .

      No. The Old Believers just continued using the older ones, So they don't have a Basis in anything. This is just the rite that was used as the time, so yes, it LOOKS like old Believers, But they aren't in communion at all, they're essentially Orthodox Protestants

    • @StJohntheBaptistOrthodoxChurch

      The title is referring to the singing (распевов)", Which is all based on pre-16th century settings. I could contend that's not really "Ancient" either, but I translated the English title directly from the Russian one, and the word "древнерусских" literally means "ancient Russian"

      This varies depending on the parish. In many parishes there's a high amount of participation in singing from the laity; I notice this with Antiochian parishes especially. For parishes with large choirs like this one it's probably less so.

      A lot of them have been though some very tough times. The almost PTSD fear of making a mistake can be caused by tough older ladies in the past who beat them up if they didn't behave. I hope they have managed to rein those ladies in a little so the churches will be more friendly to outsiders (ie. such as not getting shoved or smacked upside the head for standing in the wrong place. At my old church, the priest tried to instill a healthy fear that if we were to visit Russia and did things wrong, the Babushkas would get us.) Irl, I don't think it is possible to stay orthodox for very long without having a sense of humor.

      personally I APPRECIATE seeing the serious faces. SO much in the West is so casual, irreverent, watery thin, infected with ease. Suffering breads seriousness. Once a young girl was given complete authority over a church choir, wanting to re-make it more "happy", more "upbeat". I cried for 6 weeks at the travesty hoisted upon the centuries old spiritual
      depth of liturgical music, and the poor older suffering souls upon which the "upbeat" was heaped.
