Aaron Pierre is actually the exact same color as some of those images of John Stewart. But as a light skinned black guy myself, I’ve also received a lot of “not black enough” comments throughout my life. It definitely gets to you until you stop worrying about what ppl say about you. Most iconic dark skinned Superhero characters(including Latino dark skinned characters)have been played by lighter skinned actors. I think AP is getting heat that's been building for a long time. I don't blame him for taking the role. I'd play Fred Flintstone if I was getting millions of dollars and I'm dark skinned.

Hollywood definitely needs to do better. It would've been nice to see the creator's intentions for the character to be considered. But to say Aaron Peirre should've declined the opportunity to play a fictional character is ridiculous. If he was given the opportunity to play James Bond, we would all be in support and arguing with white folks who had an issue with it.

Thank you for covering this topic. However, the issue isn't that Aaron Pierre's not "Black enough". It's that the character was specifically designed in the comics to be a dark-skinned Black man, and Aaron is a light-skinned Black man with green eyes. Because there is a history of this (e.g. the two Storms, Sunspot, Stagecoach Mary, etc.), his casting has hit a nerve with some folks. Then there's the whole British vs. American actor angle too. But to say Aaron isn't "Black enough" I think mischaracterizes what the actual pain point is.
Also, Amandla Stenberg turned down the role of Shuri because she understood that Wakandans were dark-skinned people and that Shuri was a dark-skinned character. So in my opinion, I think it is incumbent on Black actors of whatever shade to understand the impacts of colorism and how they may unintentional engage with it. It's similar to how Halle Berry was chosen to play a trans woman for a project, then stepped down after backlash because she wasn't the right fit as a cisgender woman.
I like Aaron Pierre and I hope he does well in the role. But at a certain point, we as Black people need to make these studios understand that we are not interchangeable. Because when they do change up Black characters - especially heroes (they seem to always get the skin tone right on the villains...) - they want to try to lighten us up.

4:08 I believe it's the same scenario when choosing a black Canadian actor. There's less money that has to go out from the studio. The studio doesn't have to pay a black U.k actor or Canadian actor like they would a black actor who is from, The U.S.6:32 I think the Latino conversation is still a black conversation. In the Americas alone 5 out of 10 countries with the highest black populations, are Latin countries six if you count Haiti. But tv shows & movies don't reflect it. I think black panther 2 was awesome because it highlighted actors who otherwise would not be seen. I remember conservations of why they didn't get a light skin mexican to play the role who looks more European coming from actual Mexicans. Oftentimes Hollywood will use Latinos, west Asians, South Asians interchangeably to play roles forgetting not just dark skinned people but actual brown people as well and I believe that's why it matters. 6:45 I think all shades of brown should be celebrated. I definitely think when someone says someone isn't black enough it's definitely people's own ignorance & colorist views. I remember when people said that about some actors in the first black panther movie having no idea that certain tribes in Africa have lighter skin people as well having nothing to do with colonialism. 7:21 outside of two people 95% of the voice actors were dark skinned who voiced John Stewart. I agree they should find the best actor for the job. What's crazy is that in 2024 they couldn't find one dark skinned actor for the role. He's a good actor I'm still going to watch. Because I'm sure if he's got a lot of screen time the R's will hate on him regardless. Just look at what happened to Amandla Stenberg in
The Acolyte. Before the show aired and released people had R comments on a lot of the trailer videos and promotional photos. A lot of black comic book characters are dark skinned I just hope that people don't continue to use these same arguments or talking points. Because 7:26. When people keep saying they just chose the best actor for the job they feed into colorism because every time a dark skinned actor doesn't get the role that's the talking point. Zoe Saldana, Halle Berry, Terrance howard all cast in roles for dark skinned people. The only reason Zoe got more hate is because people didn't see her as black even though she's Afro- Latino. I just wish black people would be just as upset about colorism as they are about racism.
