- Removing the center console on an NC MX-5/ Miata should be a fairly simple and straight forward job. It's a necessary step for doing any gear shifter or transmission work, or even for audio/ navigation head unit installations.
There are 2 electrical connectors for the power window switches which need to be removed which can be near impossible without this simple hack. I wish I had known this the first time I tried it. I ended up struggling and cursing at it for a whole hour before I finally got it out.
In this video, I'm replacing the shifter gate bushing to give me smoother and easier shifts into 1st and 2nd gear. If you're experiencing difficulty shifting into these gears, this is very likely your solution!

Great video. A pointer, if you’re removing all those parts, it’s a good opportunity to replace the turret oil, I believe it takes 90cc of 75-90W GL5. Will help to reduce notchyness.

The gear change on my 2014 MX5 was getting a bit notchy so I decided to replace the gate, and watched a few videos prior to starting. I removed the console etc and guess what - the 3 bolts holding the gate in place were also loose. Is this a common fault?

Mine was worn enough after 50,000mi that I was finding reverse at traffic lights. Not a great idea! Looked pretty similar to yours.
