    Well I finally got around to altering the wiring on my heated leather NC2 seats on Friday and wasn't convinced they were working, being a sunny day the leather was hot anyway, but bright and early Sunday morning I went to the Bromley Pageant of Motoring, roof down heater pointed at my feet and heated seats on and all I can say is
    "Why didn't I do this earlier?"

    Got a 2010 NC2 in Aus with the Recaros . Pretty sure it’s the “touring” edition with fugly forged bbs wheels (have been replaced with rx7 Bathurst R oem wheels). Very much rate the seats. No heating or cooling but drivers does have a decent amount of lowering ability which sure helps anyone over 6’. Supportive and comfy (considering it’s a sporty seat) and easy enough to clean and protect with colourlock products

      Totally agree with you on that.
      The BBS wheels might have looked better if they sat a bit wider I reckon.
      The Bathurst TypeR wheels are sweet. I had them on mine for about a year. Then replaced them with 16in FD wheels cz the 17s sit too wide for passing the local legal inspections. 🤦‍♂️

    Nice video. One thing possibly worth mentioning is that, in the UK at least, both the passenger and drivers seat have sensors for the seatbelt activation. This is needed because the passenger seat has a weight sensor to indicate whether there is a passenger sitting in it or not. To turn off the seatbelt light and alarm (when moving) the belt has to be fastened, this can be quite annoying if you place a bag or other luggage on the seat. The drivers side does not have a weight sensor, it works on the logic that if the car is moving there is probably a driver present.

    • @TachOnRed
      @TachOnRed  Рік тому

      That is really useful to know.
      Just a couple months back there was someone in the NC Facebook group having trouble with swapping their passenger seats with aftermarket ones.
      They couldn't get the airbag light to go out because of that weight sensor not being present. 🤦‍♂️ Not sure what they ended up doing buf the discussion seemed to go the direction of pulling the entire weight sensor unit out of the factory seats and just having them plugged in. 🤷‍♂️

      @@TachOnRed When I got my car earlier this year (2013 ND2+ 2.0 PRHT) the seat belt warning kept sounding, I could tell it was related to the passenger side as it would stop if I plugged in the passenger seatbelt. I tried unplugging the wire from the seatbelt, checked the dash and the light was still on so assumed it was a normally closed switch (closed when seat belt unplugged), put my meter on it found this was not the case so then assumed it was an 'intelligent' active device which was giving a data signal. No, that's not the Mazda way. I eventually realised that the reason the light was on was because the driver belt wasn't plugged in, I thought as I wasn't sitting in the seat it wouldn't trigger but, as I mentioned the drivers seat doesn't have the load sensor.
      Anyhow I then found I could 'solve' my problem by either unplugging the weight sensor or the seatbelt switch. At that point I had the weight sensor out and was tempted to leave it at that but then thought this could result in the airbag not triggering if there was a passenger in the seat so swapped to removing seat belt switch.

    In Switzerland probably more than half of NC's have the Recaro seats, however, since I want a blue or white NC2 I might be out of luck because Switzerland is a boring country when it comes to car color choice... 95% of cars are either gray, black, gray, or gray.
    Another challenge buying in Switzerland is you need to usually pay a heft tax if exporting to the EU. So in the end, I'm still looking for an NC in EU that I like since I want to register the car in Spain.
    Great video btw!!! I like the pace and style.

    • @TachOnRed
      @TachOnRed  2 роки тому

      Really? They're that common! 👍😮
      Since you're in the EU, would other alternatives to the NC MX-5 be cheaper or perhaps similarly priced?
      Porsche Boxter? BMW 3 Series Convertible? BMW Z3 or Z4?
      Here in Japan, European cars are expensive just for the name and status. They can be old rusty time bombs spewing oil and coolant. But they'll still ve more expensive than a decent NC. 🤷‍♂️

    • @zeksel1
      @zeksel1 2 роки тому

      @@TachOnRed BMW and Porches and Mercedes are relatively expensive everywhere… including in Europe where they are produced. The Japanese cars in Europe tend to be actually more affordable because many Germans and Swiss have an ego about German cars and they don’t see Japanese cars as quality… even though by the way it’s completely opposite, everybody knows that Japanese cars are more reliable… and that’s true in Europe as well. So the demand for German cars is still higher in Europe which drives prices up. My wife (she is German) who used to be a product manager for Mercedes managing the S class and AMG products… I convinced her to check out the Mazda CX 30 and we ended up buying one last month because they feel just like a Mercedes and the quality is fantastic which most Germans don’t recognize or don’t even bother to look into. Not saying anything bad here about Germans, we all love the cars where we come from… I used to have a Mustang in the US and I actually would love to have a BMW M2, however it’s just too expensive for the car and for service and maintenance and repairs! I find Mazdas a fantastic value and they are great to drive… you’re just not getting the 500 hp like a AMG that most (well off) Swiss love to drive.

    I ve got a NC1 with NC3 leather heated seats. I ve also swapped the center console with a NC3 console along with the variable switches (which don't plug in the factory plugs at the back). If I do the variable resistor that you mentioned will the variable switches work?? Will I have to do anything else with the wiring ? The plugs are not the same as you mentioned at the beginning of the video for example, so I guess I have to swap the plugs also right ?

    • @TachOnRed
      @TachOnRed  3 місяці тому

      My guess is that the NC3 switches are variable resistors. If so, you won't need to add resistors.
      I'm not sure if the 12v power supply to the seats is constant or if the switches controlled that too when switched from 0 to 1. I'd need to examine the NC3 switches to know for sure. Looking at the number of pins they have and using a multimeter should allow you to figure out what each pin does.
      Then for wiring, you'll need to draw out new wires from the seats to the NC3 switches. And for your 12v supply you can tap that out of the existing wires for the old switches.

    Great video, I have a passenger airbag OFF light in the center console ON all the time, doesn't matter if there is a passenger or no, or if the key switch is ON or OFF, any ideas?

    • @TachOnRed
      @TachOnRed  2 роки тому +1

      Could be any number of things.
      I would start with checking if the passenger airbag switch is turned on. My car doesn't have one but it'll typically be somewhere near the power window deactivation switch just below and to the side of the steering wheel. If that don't work, try unplug the passenger seat harness and reconnect it. If that still doesn't fix it, then perhaps a faulty airbag sensor or airbag unit. Would then troubleshoot according to the workshop manual.

  • @TeamAteem
    @TeamAteem 3 місяці тому

    How about this? My NC2 has been tan interior swapped with nc1 seats, with the NC2 switches in or even unplugged, the seat heating just comes on and off in intervals. I have the nc1 switches but as you said, the plugs are different.

    • @TachOnRed
      @TachOnRed  3 місяці тому +1

      I suspect that means the NC2 are wired to send a constant 12v power supply to the seats. The switches only control the resistance input.
      So, your NC1 seat heaters are probably on constantly. And their built in thermostat is switching the heat off when it reaches the max temp. Then when it cools down enough, it switches back on.

I have 2008 NC1 GT with Leather Seats with Heat Warmers.I have a few tiny tears on them. I'm not going to replace the seats but instead opt for seat covers. Would seat covers interfere with heating or airbags?

    • @TachOnRed
      @TachOnRed  6 місяців тому

      Glad you found the video helpful!
      Most seat covers Ive seen do interfere with the side airbags. I've seen seat airbag compatible seat covers for other cars but not for the NC.
      As for the seat heaters, they should be fine as long as its not a cheap plastic cover. Cheap plastic covers can flake and rub off their colour onto your seat upholstery. But if it's a decent quality fabric, leather, or even imitation leather, it'll be fine.
      I had Autowear leather seat covers in my car before installing the Recaros. Fitment was so good you couldn't even tell that it was a cover unless you looked really close. Rev9Autosport sells them. But I don't think mine were compatible with side airbags.

    2006 NC1, Fitting Recaro’s, Car has zero wiring so starting from nothing. Old seats had passenger occupancy sensor, any idea how to bypass? Would it be possible to install the sensor in the Recaro’s?

    • @TachOnRed
      @TachOnRed  2 роки тому

      Do you mean aftermarket recaros?
      The passenger occupancy sensor is a mechanical weight sensor mounted to the rails. And tricking it is not as simple as just using a resistor. The only solutions I've found are like this:
      The only way I believe it is possible to trick the weight sensors (without destroying the sensors and really going nuts reverse engineering the whole thing), is to pull the rails off the seat and mount them remotely in the car.
      - There is a little silver box underneath the passenger seat with three connectors going into it. Un-plug the two connectors going to each rail. Unscrew the box from the seat and set aside.
      - Un-bolt the rails from the seat. There are 4 bolts you can get at (I believe using a 15mm wrench, or maybe a 14mm) that should be fairly obvious. Remove the rail, and drill out the rivets holding the connecting bar on. This is the only destructive and non-reversible part of the process. But those rivets are tiny and could easily be replaced with a small screw with no issues whatsoever.
      - Now you have two seat rails with sensors attached and wires hanging off. Take the hose clamps and put them around the middle of each rail. Tighten down as far as you can crank them, to compress the two halves of the rail together. This is how we make the rails think a person is sitting on them.
      - Find a place in the car where you can securely mount the rails. I mounted them to the upright supports of my roll bar, using u-bolts from the hardware store (pic attached). You could mount them in the trunk, you could zip tie them to something inside the car, whatever you want (although I'd prefer to use baling wire over zip ties).
      - The rails weigh like 2lb each, so it's not like weight is a concern.
      - After you find a place to mount the rails, figure out how long the wires need to be in order to get back to the wiring harness. Cut 4 lengths of wire (2 red, 2 black) to those lengths. Strip the ends of the wires and attach spade connectors (each wire should have 1 male, 1 female). Cut the wires coming from each of the rail sensors, strip them, and attach spade connectors again, so that you can splice the new longer wires in between the rails and the wiring harness.
      - Mount the small silver box somewhere near the seat. I zip-tied mine to the seat mount. Connect the newly spliced and lengthened wires coming from the rails. Plug the box's output connector back into the wiring harness.
      All done.

    Maybe I missed it but, what seat would be the best seat to get the maximum amount of headroom?
    Im a tall driver and I BARELY fit in my NB with stock seats. My head grazes the soft top metal bar. So im thinking of selling the car and getting an NC because I hear there is slightly more room inside.

    • @TachOnRed
      @TachOnRed  Місяць тому

      You have 3 options if you're looking to maximize headroom.
      1. Using Factory NC2 or later seats with JASS Motorsport seat lowering brackets. The NC2 or later type seats (Recaro or not) all have height adjustment. You can put them on the lowest setting, and then if you still need more headroom, get the JASS motorsport lowering brackets. Note that these require welding for installation. I've put 2 links to other videos about the lowering brackets.

      2. If that's not enough, next option is to go with aftermarket bucket seats with aftermarket low profile sliders such as this: www.sportseats4u.co.uk/product/2-pci-racing-mazda-mx5-mk3-frames-with-black-recaro-pole-position-abe-seats-package/
      3. If you need even more room, aftermarket fixed bucket seat mounts. As the name suggests, they're fixed and don't have sliders to take up space under the seat. This allows you to position seat lower. The seat position is adjustable but requires tools to do so. So it might take some trial and error to get the position right for you. An example would be like this:

    Well, shit me! Acquired a set of perfect NC2 leather heated seats along with the variable switches and newer console. Looks like I'm in for some serious work wiring these suckers up. From what I can tell so far, the green and the blue plugs are for the back and seat bottom heaters. I've learned the colors are whackado. My 2010 seats have pink, yellow, red and green wires in the blue and green connectors. Yeah, not seeing those in my 2014 diagram. Got a link for the proper wiring diagram by chance? Thanks man, great job on this video making sense of the differences. The single switch setup utilizes a built into the set thermostat where the other one gets it's resistance value in that thumb wheel. I imagine both versions have that 37degree cut off to prevent a burnt ass.

    • @TachOnRed
      @TachOnRed  9 місяців тому +1

      Congratulations on scoring the seats!
      And yes. The thermostats work just as you described. Both types have a max 37degC cutoff and are built into the seats. Only difference is the NC2s allow you to lower that cutoff temperature using a variable resistance input through the switch.
      Don't have a link to the wiring diagram but I got mine with a PDF workshop manual on CD which I bought on ebay. Mines for the NC1 only so I don't have the diagram for the later ones.
      But Id recommend having a look on ebay for the NC2 Manual set. 👍 they're way cheaper than a Haynes manual.

      @@TachOnRed Thanks bud. I think I've got a good grip on the wiring now. Spent a lot of time last night with an ohm meter. I'll make my own harnesses if I can just find plugs to fit the back of the switches. 👍

    • @jagboy69
      @jagboy69 9 місяців тому

      For the guy trying to get his NC2 heaters working in the NC1 here's the real deal. Throw the wiring diagrams in the trash and DO NOT use the cars existing harness! Follow these colors under the seat and you will be good to go! CUT the 4 wires off the blue and green plug! The red is keyed hot, the green is ground. Now the pink and yellow must travel to the back of the variable selector heat switch. Looking at the back side of that switch, the far left pin is for the yellow wire and the 3rd pin is for the PINK wire. If you want the thing to light up, the 2nd pin from the left is the grey/red and the 4th pin over is the Red/blue and those two wires come from the instrument lighting circuit. Do yourself a favor and supply the red with fused and relayed power from a keyed hot in the fuse box. If that last sentence is greek to you, walk away now. lol. The heat will not turn on unless there is some resistance across the pink and yellow. High heat is around 10 ohms and low is around 1200 ohms. A variable resistor knob COULD be used if you stay in this range.

      The converter is a universal one and it fits perfectly in the hole for the cigarette socket. I used flat wire terminals to connect it to the factory cigarette socket connector. Then wrapped it in electrical tape so it doesn't come loose with vibrations. So I didn't have to butcher up the factory wiring and it's all easily reversible.

    I own an '09 Touring w/stock cloth seats. I took out the center console and yes I have the heat seater wire harnesses plugged into blank holders behind the stock panel, weird.(so, I bought the correct stock heater switch panel from an NC2 GT) I also appear to have the correct wiring, at least under the drivers seat. What I don't have is any wiring in the labeled fuse spot in the fuse box...just an empty slot. Thinking about upgrading to stock NC2 leather seats w/stock heaters, how hard to connect existing wiring to make them work?

    • @TachOnRed
      @TachOnRed  Рік тому +1

      That's annoying isnt it. They put everything you could need for the seat heaters but didn't wire up to the fuse box. Here's what I'd do if I were you...
      I think adding wiring to the fuse box is just way more trouble than it's worth. Instead, I would first use a multimeter to check if the wires for the switches are live. You might have to add a resistor across the pins for the seat heater to complete the circuit and test if the circuit is live even without a fuse. If it is live, then they've probably just wired it to share a fuse with another circuit.
      If it's not live, what I'd then do is just draw out fresh wiring of my own from the battery straight to the seat heater switches, via a relay hooked up to the radio/ accessories circuit. This way, the seat heaters will only draw power from the battery when the car is turned on. Id put a fuse in it too right next to where it connects to the battery so that it's easily accessible from the engine bay.
      Once you've got that all done, the seats should just plug and play. :)

    I have a 2006 GT (USA). I believe only the 2006 NC's did not come with seat heaters - 2007+ GT's came with heaters. I have a 20amp fuse in the 4th slot and it does have terminals. Under the seat, I also have the green wire with the red stripe. I have not pulled off the console to see if it has plugs back there. My question is do you think the seats might have heaters but, they just didn't hook them up in 2006 models? I don't know why they would do that but, it seems weird that it would have the wiring and the fuse in place. Thoughts?

      Thank you for watching, Bill!
      It is possible your seats have the heating elements and controller but they just didn't put the switches in your car. To be sure, check if the white connector on the seat side has the green plug going into it. If it does, then you can be sure your seats have the heating elements. So, if you already have the fuse in place, all you need now is to add switches to get heated seats. :)
      Why would they do that? I imagine to have fewer variations in their production line and more modularity across different grades and vehicle markets. All their vehicles come off the same production line. And the only difference between vehicles with seat heaters and without is the switches which can even be installed or removed at the dealership. They don't ever have to worry about ending up with a huge excess pile of wiring harnesses for a grade that didn't sell well.

      @@TachOnRed Yes, I think you are right about Mazda being a small company and just putting everything in place so they didn't have to create more variables. I know Canadian cars in 2006 did have seat heaters so, it would make sense that they would just put them in all of them. So, you said green "plug", did you mean green wire? All my plugs are white but, with different color wires. I saw that you had commented on the Facebook group a while back on this subject. I'm going to go there and reply back to your comment with pics of under my seats. The driver side has a green/red wire next to a black/blue wire. The passenger side has a green wire without the red though. Curious what you think after you see the pics. Thanks again for all your help!

      I'd judge it compared to other cars similar in spec, mileage and condition. And the aftermarket exhaust and suspension in my opinion should decrease the value of the car rather than raise it.

      Try using some extension wires to connect the heater controls from your passenger side to the driver side.
      If you have the same problem with your driver seat, it could be a faulty controller.
      The seat heater controller is built into the seat. So, replacing the seat might be easiest.

    • @TachOnRed
      @TachOnRed  2 роки тому +1

      As far as I know, no. But the height adjustable NC2+ seats could be considered to have some lumbar adjustability because the height adjustment only moves the seat cushion while keeping the backrest in the same spot. That means you can set the seat height where the arch in the backrest is in the right spot for you.
      I've also heard of people modding their seats with inflatable lumbar support bags. 😊 👍 The parts are pretty cheap and easy to find. I'm just not too comfortable disassembling my seat and upholstery. 😆
