I remember crying like a baby when I heard he died. He always reminded me of my father, who has also been diagnosed recently with Alzheimer’s at 60. To watch someone you love and think is the strongest person you know, become a shell of themselves absolutely is heartbreaking. I cherish the time I have left with ‘my dad’, and will still love him when he’s gone but his body is still around.

Less-successful people say, "Too much success is dangerous. Just look at what happened to [Prince, Robin Williams, etc.] But I'm still here, so I must be living right."

If CIA have Heart attack and Cancer guns back in the 70s that melt and become untraceable Im pretty sure they have much more advanced stuff now.

Very generous of Bobcat to share his memories of Robin. They were, infact, best of friends & I feel his discussion was very respectful.
Robin Williams had a very lonely, isolated childhood.
His Father was GM of the Ford Motor co., & was rarely home. Williams stated that when his father was around, Robin was afraid of him.
They were a wealthy family. His mother did not work, she was a ' socialite' & Narcissistic.
He was bought up by a beloved Nanny.
He was sent to private schools & was bullied mercilessly by his peers.
He developed many of his personas & voices, playing for years, alone in the Attic with his tin soldiers.
The only way he was able to gain his mother's attention was to make her laugh.
    He was an only child.
He used cocaine & alcohol to self medicate, for quite a number of years. LBD & Parkinson's are often found later in life, & there is a link to past substance abuse.
He was a highly sensitive soul & a genius. Anyone who was truly friends with him, & most who worked with him said he was the kindest person they had ever known. A giver, not a taker.
Devestating to see the destruction of such a beautiful human being.
His eyes haunted me, as they were filled with sorrow along with the joy he created.
    Vale Robin.

"He thought there were people INSIDE the TV." Reminds me of people who, when telephones were first invented, wondered how they fit tiny people inside the devices to talk, and why it sounded like people they knew. You sometimes see this as jokes in TV shows and movies during older times, but it was a very real phenomenon. When you think about the kinds of "basic knowledge" stuff that people today have versus those a thousand years ago, it's astounding how complex and knowledgeable modern society is.
Sorry to hear about your situation. It's tough to go through.

The victim-blaming mentality a lot of people have is, I think, a coping mechanism for dealing with how chaotic and unfair life is always gonna be. You can do everything right, you can treat literally everybody in your life compassionately and fairly, you can live life AS GOOD as you possibly can, and a drunk driver can still plow through you as you drive through an intersection... your daughter can still get brain cancer... you can still show up to work and get unexpectedly fired... your wife can still meet someone else and fall in love.

The Robin Williams one here is like 'Oh, well, yeah, he was depressed, and also in a shitty marriage/ex drug addict/couldn't keep his finances together, so that's why'. You can just keep going on and on 'Yeah, because he ate like shit/Yeah, well, I told her he was gonna hit her one day and she sucks at picking boyfriends anyway'.... yadda yadda yadda.

I lost my mom to dementia Jan. '19. The worst part wasn't when she physically died. That was actually a relief that her physical suffering was over. The worst was watching the person that she was slowly fade away. The day she died, the chaplain at their retirement home was talking to my brother and I, and told us that it was okay to mourn her loss. My brother looked him in the eye and told him that we had already been mourning her loss as the woman that we knew as Mom had died years before and this was just the physical shell that was left. Sadly we lost my father 15 months later. She died 3 months before their 59th anniversary and I don't think he ever really recovered from that.

Bobcat made a very good film called 'World's Greatest Dad' starring Robin as a teacher whose snotty teenage son accidentally commits suicide by autoerotic asphyxiation, and instead of being honest about the difficult relationship they had, the teacher attributes his own writings to his deceased son and becomes famous for it. It is one of the darkest comedies I've ever seen, and it might be very difficult to watch now, but it's worth the effort.

This makes me so sad. I love Bobcat and Robin, and I watched dementia change my grandmother. The saddest part of all of it, IMO, is that Robin had to tie himself off with a belt hung on a doorknob, like some kind of prison suicide, rather than be able to have a physicians-assisted termination. most humans, naturally, aren't meant to live as long as we currently do. It's because of the amazing advances in medicine that so many are able to live so long and live so well. And I think think there is no shame nor selfishness for wanting to die in a peaceful and controlled state.
This whole thing just makes me want to give Bobcat a huge hug.
