By far the best UA-cam demo of out-of-phase pickups. Great playing, and FANTASTIC tone. But your list of guitarists is missing a big name-Brian May! All three pickups on Red Special have polarity switches, and he uses the out-of-phase tone on most of Queen's most famous solos.

@@BuddaGuedes Haven't yet. But that's what's got me all over UA-cam - trying to get a sense of what sounds are possible, so I'll know what wiring scheme to follow. There are a lot of subtle differences between various wiring schemes, and I want to know what results from each. I recently sold an Ibanez with humbuckers, that I did all kinds of custom switching and filtering. Just acquired a Harley Benton telecaster, and looking to exploit some of this out-of phase mojo I'm hearing. Your video has actually been the most useful, most convincing example of a sound I'm going to aim for.
Finally, a scientific explanation and a decent demo that's not just someone showing off, thank you! Now to decide if I actually want the guitar I can't play to have this feature.

I build most of my telecasters with an out of phase middle position and its an awesome sound. You can add some volume boost to it with a compression pedal with just a bit of compression added as well and it takes it over the top.
You actually explained the principle! Somehow, after 25 years of guitar playing, I just tonight heard about this wiring trick. And I've looked at a few UA-cam videos to gain insight into what this sounds like, but despite a number of the other videos thinking that were explaining the principle behind this sound, they didn't understand (or at least didn't articulate, but it really sounded like they didn't understand) the basic idea of phase cancellation. You can't really tell people how this works without getting into waves and how amplitude sums if in phase and subtracts if out. You, thankfully, offer a *helpful* resource because you get into all that. Those other UA-camrs should have watched your video first before making theirs! Phase is important for anybody working with audio, but if you do anything with modular synthesizers, you'll also encounter a very different side of this concept. It's pretty fascinating so learning about this pickup wiring technique really interested me. Your video was definitely the best demonstration of it I found. I really appreciate your video and I'll check out the rest of your channel! Appreciate the enthusiasm!
Two years ago, a friend of mine guive me a humbucker from the 80´s, and he tell me it was broken because don´t have treble basse tone, i put in my guitar, and the sound is expectacular, that was the sound i was searshing for a long time, but i want more of that sound i was hearing, then i was working with that humbucker, trying to get out even more of that sound, and by mistake, i put it out of fase, and i love it.
I did this mod to my les paul along with a blender knob, so I can gradually add the out of phase sound. It works like a chime! Sometimes les pauls can be a bit tricky to stand out in a mix, so this mod helps a lot!

Just my two cents for those who are wanting to apply this trick on stratocasters: The "out of phase sound" is more prominent and useful if the distance beetween pickups is sufficiently away from each other. The best effect is achieved by using the bridge and neck pups connected together, but since the stock strat circuit doesn't allow to do this, you need to install a switch on the pickguard to allow the neck pickup being connected directly with the bridge pickup when, for example, the pickup selector on position 1 or 5. This mod is also called "Gilmour mod" because he used it on his black strat. And secondly you need to install ANOTHER switch for phase inverting the neck (or bridge pickup, it makes no difference). So you will end with two switches installed on your pickguard. You can use those micro toggle switches available at electronic stores, or you can use push-pull pots if you want your pickguard untouched.

@@vpmobile2185 Yes, as far as I know this trick will work on any pickups you have on your guitar. The only thing that matters is when you have a "lipstick" installed on the pickup (like the Tele's neck pickup) or a grounded cage like the traditional PAF humbuckers have. Those two mentioned need to be "treated" previously in order to isolate the grounded pieces from the bobbin cables. In the case of the strat and/or P90's that is not the case, because these pickups are mounted inside a plastic protector.
@@vpmobile2185 and, secondly, the P90 IS a single coil pickup, indeed, hotter than a standard strat pickup. Just ask Brian May if you want to reassure you how it sounds with a hotter kind of single coil pup 😁.

I have a Vintage "Lemon Drop" done like the Peter Green guitar with out of phase... In a les paul type guitar you can take more nuaces from the out phase tone, adjusting the tone and volume knobs of each pickup. Abraço!

I have been in the process of attempting this same mod for my dual humbucker guitar two push pull pots one to switch the neck to series parallel and the bridge humbucker to do a phase reverse. Using cts tone shaper solderless pots. That out of phase and series parallel mod should allow me to get by with one guitar thank you so much for sharing this in english and explaining the wave canceling effect that gives us this sonic option to our library.👍👍
I had this done to my Tele - sounds too thin (yours sounds a bit fatter here) but I use an EQ pedal with bass/mids cranked up and it sounds great - I love your demos - SUPER EXCELLENT!!

I just recently learned that Whole Lotta Love’s lead guitar is an out of phase guitar. I always assumed it was EQ at full! This video is great, super illustrative, and really cool! Cheers man! P.S: instant respect for the english comment. I’m from Spain and I think exactly the same way!
Essentially, you simply switch the ground and the hot wires from their normal lug positions or on the pot shell, on either pickup, and then the two PUPs will be 180 degrees out-of-phase when both are running, which tends to cancel the low frequencies. If you have two guitar speakers that are out-of-phase (OOP), (remember, 180 degrees), when one speaker is extending forward, the other is retracting backward, which cancels out or greatly reduces, the bottom end of the amplifier. As you will hear in the Nos. 3 and 4 examples below, jazzman Mickey Baker's Les Paul was wired OOP, as was James Burton's Telecaster in examples 1 and 2. This was factory standard for Teles either out of the late '50s, or the early '60s, I'm not sure exactly when. In fact, the Telecaster wiring during that era was completely different than today's, in that, position No. 1, was lead (bridge); No. 2 was an in-between like No. 2 on a Stratocaster, and both bridge and neck PUPs were running, OOP; No. 3 was straight up in the middle and was just the neck PUP treble; No. 4, was all the way forward, and was automatic neck-on-bassy tone. Tonetwisters I have a concern. I am making a Rickenbacker 4003 style bass guitar. The thing is that I am left handed. Another thing is that this guitar isn’t routed exactly for a Rickenbacker bridge pickup. I bought a Seymour Duncan Jazz bass bridge pickup and a Bartolini Rickenbacker replacement neck pickup. They are both typically made for right hand guitars. To install them, I am going to install them upside down. Will that affect the phase in any way? I don’t really mind out of phase sound too much. I actually prefer high frequency tones. However, I do intend to make more guitars and I may want to be in phase with a few of those builds.
It's a great sound. As someone already said, Brian May recorded a lot using out of phase tones. In conjunction with the "Deacy amp" he obtained a very distinct tone. I particulary like his guitar orchestrations in songs like Procession or God Save The Queen (it sounds almost like a group of cornets or an organ, in my opinion). I'm planning to do this kind of mod on a 2 pickups guitar, except I will tweak the connections in order to make it out-of-phase always, just like the old guitars. I don't need the normal configuration of the middle position (never use it), so I get that extra "out-of-phase sound". Thanks for the demo of the sounds and the explanations, just what I needed! Hello fellow friend!! I'm from Argentina I arrived here by accident, looking for some info of this AWESOME mod. I recently made to my MIM Tele the so called "Broadcaster" circuit mod and I'm love again with the tones she brings me now jajja. But I want something more to do, because I play mostly blues and classic Rock stuff. It would be nice if you can enlight me some advice of how to do this mod, because the Tele have the ground connection on the bridge plate, and it is necessary to isolate it from the pickup. I read a few years ago that its simpler to do this mod on the neck pickup instead. Also one more question: ¿The push pull pot associated with this mod, is always be located on the "tone pot" or it can be made it on the Volume pot? ¿Is that a tradition that the tone pot needs to be push pull, or is by personal preference? Thanks a lot for your video, your tone is awesome, and your playing is one of the best musical things I ever heard from a long time.

love the outta phase sounds bro! i bought a used peavey raptor H/S/S strat clone a couple years ago and noticed in 2 and 4 it was outta phase...thought maybe the mid pup was wired backwards by mistake... pulled it apart to get a closer look and its wired up correctly...the pups are ceramic magnet...the magnet looked a bit crooked on the bottom of the mid pup...so i was able to simply push it to center... pulled it off the pup just to see if i could...it popped off nicely...i put it right back and marked the magnet and the pickup baseplate and re assembled the guitar leaving the bar mag on wrong... loved the tones in 2 and 4 outta phase esp with the humbucker! as icing on the cake i put a gilmour "modswitch" on the scratchplate and hooked it up b4 putting it all together...now theres a really wild tone with all 3 on at the same time lol! its stayin like it is! factory oopsie and lovin it!

One of the biggest misconceptions is of Jimmy Pages Les Paul. His "Out of Phase/Parallel " mods all came about circa 1984 (Post Led Zeppelin) Gibsons 'Jimmy Page ' models are (electrically) "Period Incorrect" for Led Zeppelin. J Pages guitar was 50 standard wiring throughout Led Zeppelin. I go into detail and replicate his live 1973 tone on my channel for any Jimmy Page Les Paul tone chasers
I discovered the out of phase sound by accident on a Les Paul copy. I installed a 1985 Schaller Humbucker pickup in the neck position and a brand new Golden Age overwound humbucker in the bridge. I couldn't figure out what was going on at first until I started researching on the internet to verify this was the deal. Sounds exactly as he describes, Nasal and like a wah-wah in the middle position with both volume pots set at 10. As soon as I back off one of the volume slightly I get the full signal from the other pickup.
My strat bridge pickup is out of phase (so position 2 sounds weird but position 4 sounds fine) I’m debating getting it fixed or keeping it that way, since it is more unique this way.
@@BuddaGuedes You use a Mesa Boogie in this video, right? I have an older Mesa Boogie Express 5:25. It is hard to dial in a good tone but once you've found it, it sounds great.... I connect it to external cabs, now with a vintage EVM12L, and a Tubescreamer for an extra boost if needed.
I removed the phase reverse option on a one modded tele when I got a Nashville. I found the “neck and middle” sound far more useful. My “Fat Nash” has a four way switch. Tele bridge. - bridge and (Strat) middle. - bridge and (Gibson Humbucker) neck. - humbucker only.

You could also buy a 6-way switch (which are available) to give all combinations: 1=bridge only, 2=both in series in phase, 3=both in series out-of-phase, 4=both in parallel in phase, 5=both in parallel out-of-phase, 6-neck only.
@@BuddaGuedes If you are interested, I've found a wiring diagram that allows these 6 sound modes, but using a 3 way switch and 2 push pull potenciometers. I think it's easier to use while playing, but I haven't built it yet, so I don't know if the diagram actually works, but it seems legit.
Jimi was famous for using his wah as almost like a tone knob, cutting the bass for a solo. I’ve listened to countless recordings of him and he seemed to prefer a mid/treble- heavy sound. I think it’s possible but I don’t know for sure.
If you would like to try series wiring with your Telecaster, buy an Oak Grigsby 4 Way Switch and get your friend to wire it for you. Then, you will get 6 sounds out of your Telecaster: Bridge, Bridge & Neck in Parallel in Phase, Bridge & Neck in Parallel out of Phase, Neck, Bridge & Neck in Series in Phase, Bridge & Neck in Series out of Phase.

Why nobody mentions the REAL king of the out of phase sound, T-Bone Walker? He basically set the standard for everyone who came after, from Pee Wee Crayton, Lowell Fulson, Goree Carter to all the modern guys I don't even care about. Also check out Junior Barnard. Thank me later.

Great demo. If you want some really weird inverted pickup sounds, checkout Big Black "Kerosene." Apparently one of their other tricks was notching flexible copper picks. Strange indeed.
I recently flipped the magnet on the neck pickup in my les paul i absolutely love the sound but the volume drop is kinda annoying, do you know any trick in the wiring to kinda solve it? i have series/parallel wiring done as well

If you EQ the second channel of your amp with more bass and use a channel switcher, it can provide a nice unique tone. But I get that you don't like it. I was into it from the days of James Burton playing with Ricky Nelson.
I got this sound by accident when I upgraded the pickups on a 72 Keef Richards Tele reissue I owned - the two pickups I replaced were made by different manufacturers who used opposite polarity in their standards. So when I switched to middle position = instant nasal tone. Andy Summers used this sound on his modified Tele - I think he used it on the Flanged/Delayed harmonics he did as sound fx on a lot of his early Police stuff. I never got round to fitting a switch so I could change it to normal.
The Biggest "Blunder" is on the Gibson Jimmy Page Custom Shop Models where the 'Middle Pickup Position automatically defaults to a Peter Green 'Out of Phase' sound and (arguably )the most iconic Page Tone (Middle Position IN PHASE ) is not available! He probably uses this sound more than any other.. I don't know of any song where he uses a Les Paul out of phase. Must be somewhere in his solo career i suppose ?

Just my two cents for those who are wanting to apply this trick on stratocasters:
The "out of phase sound" is more prominent and useful if the distance beetween pickups is sufficiently away from each other. The best effect is achieved by using the bridge and neck pups connected together, but since the stock strat circuit doesn't allow to do this, you need to install a switch on the pickguard to allow the neck pickup being connected directly with the bridge pickup when, for example, the pickup selector on position 1 or 5. This mod is also called "Gilmour mod" because he used it on his black strat. And secondly you need to install ANOTHER switch for phase inverting the neck (or bridge pickup, it makes no difference).
So you will end with two switches installed on your pickguard. You can use those micro toggle switches available at electronic stores, or you can use push-pull pots if you want your pickguard untouched.

@@vpmobile2185 Yes, as far as I know this trick will work on any pickups you have on your guitar. The only thing that matters is when you have a "lipstick" installed on the pickup (like the Tele's neck pickup) or a grounded cage like the traditional PAF humbuckers have. Those two mentioned need to be "treated" previously in order to isolate the grounded pieces from the bobbin cables. In the case of the strat and/or P90's that is not the case, because these pickups are mounted inside a plastic protector.
@@vpmobile2185 and, secondly, the P90 IS a single coil pickup, indeed, hotter than a standard strat pickup. Just ask Brian May if you want to reassure you how it sounds with a hotter kind of single coil pup 😁.

I have a Vintage "Lemon Drop" done like the Peter Green guitar with out of phase... In a les paul type guitar you can take more nuaces from the out phase tone, adjusting the tone and volume knobs of each pickup. Abraço!

I have been in the process of attempting this same mod for my dual humbucker guitar two push pull pots one to switch the neck to series parallel and the bridge humbucker to do a phase reverse. Using cts tone shaper solderless pots. That out of phase and series parallel mod should allow me to get by with one guitar thank you so much for sharing this in english and explaining the wave canceling effect that gives us this sonic option to our library.👍👍

Essentially, you simply switch the ground and the hot wires from their normal lug positions or on the pot shell, on either pickup, and then the two PUPs will be 180 degrees out-of-phase when both are running, which tends to cancel the low frequencies.
If you have two guitar speakers that are out-of-phase (OOP), (remember, 180 degrees), when one speaker is extending forward, the other is retracting backward, which cancels out or greatly reduces, the bottom end of the amplifier.
As you will hear in the Nos. 3 and 4 examples below, jazzman Mickey Baker's Les Paul was wired OOP, as was James Burton's Telecaster in examples 1 and 2. This was factory standard for Teles either out of the late '50s, or the early '60s, I'm not sure exactly when. In fact, the Telecaster wiring during that era was completely different than today's, in that, position No. 1, was lead (bridge); No. 2 was an in-between like No. 2 on a Stratocaster, and both bridge and neck PUPs were running, OOP; No. 3 was straight up in the middle and was just the neck PUP treble; No. 4, was all the way forward, and was automatic neck-on-bassy tone. Tonetwisters I have a concern. I am making a Rickenbacker 4003 style bass guitar. The thing is that I am left handed. Another thing is that this guitar isn’t routed exactly for a Rickenbacker bridge pickup. I bought a Seymour Duncan Jazz bass bridge pickup and a Bartolini Rickenbacker replacement neck pickup. They are both typically made for right hand guitars. To install them, I am going to install them upside down. Will that affect the phase in any way? I don’t really mind out of phase sound too much. I actually prefer high frequency tones. However, I do intend to make more guitars and I may want to be in phase with a few of those builds.
It's a great sound. As someone already said, Brian May recorded a lot using out of phase tones. In conjunction with the "Deacy amp" he obtained a very distinct tone. I particulary like his guitar orchestrations in songs like Procession or God Save The Queen (it sounds almost like a group of cornets or an organ, in my opinion). I'm planning to do this kind of mod on a 2 pickups guitar, except I will tweak the connections in order to make it out-of-phase always, just like the old guitars. I don't need the normal configuration of the middle position (never use it), so I get that extra "out-of-phase sound". Thanks for the demo of the sounds and the explanations, just what I needed! I arrived here by accident, looking for some info of this AWESOME mod. I recently made to my MIM Tele the so called "Broadcaster" circuit mod and I'm love again with the tones she brings me now jajja. But I want something more to do, because I play mostly blues and classic Rock stuff. It would be nice if you can enlight me some advice of how to do this mod, because the Tele have the ground connection on the bridge plate, and it is necessary to isolate it from the pickup. I read a few years ago that its simpler to do this mod on the neck pickup instead.
Also one more question:
¿The push pull pot associated with this mod, is always be located on the "tone pot" or it can be made it on the Volume pot? ¿Is that a tradition that the tone pot needs to be push pull, or is by personal preference?

i bought a used peavey raptor H/S/S strat clone a couple years ago and noticed in 2 and 4 it was outta phase...thought maybe the mid pup was wired backwards by mistake...
pulled it apart to get a closer look and its wired up correctly...the pups are ceramic magnet...the magnet looked a bit crooked on the bottom of the mid pup...so i was able to simply push it to center...
pulled it off the pup just to see if i could...it popped off nicely...i put it right back and marked the magnet and the pickup baseplate and re assembled the guitar leaving the bar mag on wrong...
loved the tones in 2 and 4 outta phase esp with the humbucker!
as icing on the cake i put a gilmour "modswitch" on the scratchplate and hooked it up b4 putting it all together...now theres a really wild tone with all 3 on at the same time lol!

One of the biggest misconceptions is of Jimmy Pages Les Paul. His "Out of Phase/Parallel " mods all came about circa 1984 (Post Led Zeppelin) Gibsons 'Jimmy Page ' models are (electrically) "Period Incorrect" for Led Zeppelin. J Pages guitar was 50 standard wiring throughout Led Zeppelin. I go into detail and replicate his live 1973 tone on my channel for any Jimmy Page Les Paul tone chasers
I know that’s true but Jimmy page used very bright tones, mainly due tu using the bright channel of his plexi.

I discovered the out of phase sound by accident on a Les Paul copy. I installed a 1985 Schaller Humbucker pickup in the neck position and a brand new Golden Age overwound humbucker in the bridge. I couldn't figure out what was going on at first until I started researching on the internet to verify this was the deal. Sounds exactly as he describes, Nasal and like a wah-wah in the middle position with both volume pots set at 10. As soon as I back off one of the volume slightly I get the full signal from the other pickup.

My strat bridge pickup is out of phase (so position 2 sounds weird but position 4 sounds fine) I’m debating getting it fixed or keeping it that way, since it is more unique this way.

@@BuddaGuedes You use a Mesa Boogie in this video, right? I have an older Mesa Boogie Express 5:25. It is hard to dial in a good tone but once you've found it, it sounds great.... I connect it to external cabs, now with a vintage EVM12L, and a Tubescreamer for an extra boost if needed.

I removed the phase reverse option on a one modded tele when I got a Nashville. I found the “neck and middle” sound far more useful. My “Fat Nash” has a four way switch. Tele bridge. - bridge and (Strat) middle. - bridge and (Gibson Humbucker) neck. - humbucker only.
That’s why I use a push push knob. This way I can get both tones

You could also buy a 6-way switch (which are available) to give all combinations: 1=bridge only, 2=both in series in phase, 3=both in series out-of-phase, 4=both in parallel in phase, 5=both in parallel out-of-phase, 6-neck only.

Jimi was famous for using his wah as almost like a tone knob, cutting the bass for a solo. I’ve listened to countless recordings of him and he seemed to prefer a mid/treble- heavy sound. I think it’s possible but I don’t know for sure.

If you would like to try series wiring with your Telecaster, buy an Oak Grigsby 4 Way Switch and get your friend to wire it for you. Then, you will get 6 sounds out of your Telecaster: Bridge, Bridge & Neck in Parallel in Phase, Bridge & Neck in Parallel out of Phase, Neck, Bridge & Neck in Series in Phase, Bridge & Neck in Series out of Phase.
Steve Albini did it for all of Big Black’s stuff. He used SD Quarter Pounders

No. The out of phase makes it sound thin and konky not like a Strat.. for that you would need a middle pickup

I recently flipped the magnet on the neck pickup in my les paul i absolutely love the sound but the volume drop is kinda annoying, do you know any trick in the wiring to kinda solve it? i have series/parallel wiring done as well
The volume drop is due to the cancelation. Use a boost or an overdrive pedal

No. You must be taking off reverse wound on a middle Strat pickup.

If you EQ the second channel of your amp with more bass and use a channel switcher, it can provide a nice unique tone. But I get that you don't like it. I was into it from the days of James Burton playing with Ricky Nelson.
I got this sound by accident when I upgraded the pickups on a 72 Keef Richards Tele reissue I owned - the two pickups I replaced were made by different manufacturers who used opposite polarity in their standards. So when I switched to middle position = instant nasal tone. Andy Summers used this sound on his modified Tele - I think he used it on the Flanged/Delayed harmonics he did as sound fx on a lot of his early Police stuff. I never got round to fitting a switch so I could change it to normal.

The Biggest "Blunder" is on the Gibson Jimmy Page Custom Shop Models where the 'Middle Pickup Position automatically defaults to a Peter Green 'Out of Phase' sound and (arguably )the most iconic Page Tone (Middle Position IN PHASE ) is not available! He probably uses this sound more than any other.. I don't know of any song where he uses a Les Paul out of phase. Must be somewhere in his solo career i suppose ?
Jimmy page used a lot of different things in the studio! For example the solo on Stairway to Heaven is a Telecaster.
