I agree with you totally in that the 1985 Live Aid version is perfect and timeless. The way he altered the arrangement of that performance is superb. He emphasized the soul aspect that this song has. I do, however, think comparing it to "Stairway to Heaven" and "Comfortably Numb" is a stretch. As good as Young's Live Aid rendition of this song is, it's not THAT good. But if you like it that much, then who am I to get in the way of your opinion?! 😃

I dont think it is shot. I think he vocal chords were tight and tired. All older singers have to reduce their performances due to their aging vocals, Paul has probably been overdoing with too many shows. A week's rest and I bet he will be fine.
Unfortunate with age the voice doesn't manage with high notes anymore. Other singers are fortunate they can still sing a lot of their original songs, albeit their voices are different - listen to Billy Idol then and now. Paul young is still a legend. I wonder how Freddy Mercury's vocals would have held up had he lived to 60+.
Actually, this has a Tom Waits feel to it in an odd way, or Johnny Cash doing 'Hurt'. If it was stripped down with just an acoustic guitar and Paul giving this scratchy, raw rendition, I think it would find an audience.
