9:01 Future Plans With This Material
After learning about thi material called Panzerholz, the first thing I thought about was making snare drum out of it. Its just a bunch of resin impregnated hardwood veneers squished together. The adiophiles out there seem to be obsessed with it for its acoustic dampening properties and build the most ridiculous things out of it to eliminate any sort of resonance. For example, people use it to build pcbs (it had good dielectric properties too), record player carts, plates, speaker cabinets, all sorts of stands, and the list goes on…
I wasnt able to source that material in the US, so I found something similar and hit up Sam from HHG Drums to see if he could whip up a snare drum out of it for me. I looks super cool and sounds rad too! No matter how I tuned it, it sounded great. Definitely a great all around snare and can see myself using for basically any genre.
Whats the first song you would play on this snare?
How did you comment 13 hours ago on a 30 second old video
Blue - Eiffel 65
@@tbtdylarn8611 creator tricks eh...
Any song off "St Anger" Really though, the snare sounds tight with a nice subtle pop. I dig it, cool find on the material too.
He had the video on private till now
dunno if your mixing skills are getting better and better or is it just the snare, but man this sounds amazing
Perfect sounding for that size...
It's the heads and tuning. HHG shells are really cool but shells don't affect the sound much.
I don't wanna get into a spittin match, but the shell material plays a big part in how a drum sounds. I dig the sound of this one 😎
@@Bill-os4kf I’m gonna split the difference. For stave, drums like this one and solid shells, the type of wood does play a significant role in a drum’s tone. When talking about ply drums, however, wood type plays only a minor role in a drum’s tone. Other factors like heads, hoop type, mass on a shell, bearing edges, thickness of shell, etc. all play a much more prominent role in determining sound.
You inspired me to drum and now I'm in a band! Thank you
That's awesome! Have loads of fun, you and your mates! 😀👍
OMG, that sounds so good at the medium and low tension tunings!! Crisp yet fat, and so much presence!
Everyone always talks about the drums themselves but RdavidR is one smooth cat on the kit. Super Clean Mixing is not possible without super clean chops. The snare is gorgeous
Kudos to HHG for giving this a go. I’ve heard nothing but great things about this builder.
This snare has a lot character its very dynamic and reacts to your hits exactly how you want it to
i could listen to the medium tuning groove for a thousand years bravo
Man that’s one of the best sounding snares I’ve ever heard it’s got like the perfect punch and low end
This has gotta be the coolest drum I've ever seen
Hey david! Huge fan of the channel Man, I love all of the experiments and such you do. Keep up the good work
So much punch on that, and impressed that it didn't need any ring or gel damper.
That snare looks and sounds **amazing**.
That high tuning is beautiful😍
I love those little omni mics on snares & cymbals!
it just sounds amazing
That snare has just the right amount of ring to it, sounds great.
Absolutely beautiful. Sounds quite incredible as well.
My dudes from HHG!!! Sam and Kevin are the best, and their drums are super solid, such a great video David!
Always awesome and creative content! Thank you!
Holyyyy that sounds as gorgeous as it looks
Wow the whole kit sounds A-amazing!!!

Very cool drum!!! Awesome vid as usual!!!
Sam makes some really good stuff!
Sounds lovely.
some great technique in this video, on top of the lovely snare
Remarkable sounding snare.
Really love this channel! Idk if you can see but I’ve almost binged watched you catalog 🤕. Thanks for the content!
That snare is dumb sexy!!! Those dudes make sick drums which I freaking love !! High and mid tunes are siiiiccckkkk! Love it man ! Keep doing drum builds with them! Also that kit sounded slammin!
That's beautiful man!
Piccolo snare have always been my fav
Sounds and looks great.
I'm not crazy about stave shells, but I'll make an exception for this. It's a pretty special drum.
May i ask why?
@@ElijahCuddlefish really? If given a choice between a stave shell and a solid, steam bent or ply construction you'd choose the stave? Come on, man.
@@alanduncan1980 "come on man" gives zero reasons why you think steam-bent or ply shell is better than a stave. in a blind test you would have no idea when was which.
I like metal snares. Stave drums look really cool, though. I don’t like this one so much, but it’s interesting for sure. As far as tonal preference of wood snare designs?… I’m too poor to have developed a taste for what’s more preferable.
@@alanduncan1980 Give your reasons. I know why I wouldn’t choose a stave construction over other methods and some have nothing to do with sound or playability. What are YOUR reasons?
that nc gonna look really good as it yellows and checks.
UGH I want an HHG Snare so bad. Such cool drums.
Cool sound!
Really nice snare response on this one. Good job recording it too.
HHG is awesome. I bought a stave mahogany shell from them to build out and the shop I brought it to drilled it wrong.
Dang! 😖
Filler time
Did they cover the cost of buying a new shell?
@@ToomanyFrancis Nope, they told me I was wrong because they were too experienced to screw up and I almost put them on blast but in the end I decided not to give them all that energy and moved on with my life. They don’t have a business anymore as far as I know, so that’s fine by me.
@@sleepwhenimdead9667 They're too experienced to have a business.
I usually don't like shallower shells but this sounds amazing
damn that sounds killer! 🔥
woah u nailed that low tuning, sounds great!
Yo David love your vids man
Sounds and looks amazing. Personally, I would have gone just a little tighter on the tuning.
One thing you could do to make it look cooler. Get a very fine paintbrush and paint in the grooves with your color of choice.
Amazing
Bro i watch you from colombia 🇨🇴 cool content
Nice cameo from Harold 🙂
wow, so cool.
First thing that came to mind when I heard it was S L A M, damn it sounds brutal
Reminds me of those acouticon drums remo used to make.
It sounds pretty lively.
"Take that, guitar nerds!" I'm feeling seen but also attacked. Great video!
I enjoy your channel.
High tuning Sublime sounding snare
Hey Dave, I don't know if you've chosen a wrap material but I bought some white marine pearl celluloid drum wraps off a Chinese seller on ebay to wrap the $20 kit I bought and they came out phenomenal. Love your videos as always!
i had a friend that bought some cheap wrap off ebay and he gave me a scrap of it, seems pretty decent for the price
Either it's your mixing, or that snare sounds extremely balanced and very "airy"! It definitely has a resonance, but not the whistling and sustained kind that you need to remove in post. Sounds beautiful!
DUDE YOU CAN GET STICKS MADE OUT OF THAT STUFF AND IT'S LIKE PLAYING WITH TREE TRUNKS, I LOVE IT.
Sam can probably whip up a pair for you, but damn will they be expensive haha
Amazing idea & execution! Well done! 👏🏻 David, what are those hats???
I used to build science tables for school out of a material called Trespa, it's a similar thing, resin impregnated, hyper dense, doesn't transfer shock. Might make a neat drum. Stuff's insanely heavy though.
I love this sound. Meaty. I liked the pongy sound of the first play clip; combined withe the meaty sound, it's a huge sound with personality.
Everyone gangsta 'til the barcode snare rocks up.
sam does great work. hes doing ply shells now i heard.
Love it weeeeeeeeeeeee🤘
Rdavid is so lucky to have all this I'm just lucky I even got a snare
Stunning! I would have to find a clear batter head that sounds good so I could keep those beautiful "V" joints displayed.
yeah is definitely the move for this drum!
Do you have a video of what mic’s you use or recommend pls and thank you
YOU RAWK!!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
@rdavidr Great sounding drum and great playing as always. You did a little fill at 4.44 which i would love to see a breakdown of or transcription if at all possible? Keep up the good work 👍
sweet
Great sounding snare, David. I do have a question. Why is the butt plate in the center of the drum instead of being down by the resonant rim like most drums?
Nice
This snare sounds great! What hihats are you using on this video?
My 1988 REMO kit is resin-impregnated wood.
Oh my... 😲
This gives me an idea for another crazy project right away - *make a drum shell out of pencils.*
Pimp out the questlove pocket kit!
Panzerholz translated from german to english is tank wood
🤔🤔🤔 might have to have them make me something like those pepper mills in a 12 lug deep snare 😬🥰🥰🥰
It has all the crack and ring of aluminum with the tone of maple
Dude I'm here so early this time !
Where did you get the ceiling mounted mic arms? I've been trying to find something like those. Thanks
What hi hats? Sounding so good
By the way 'Panzerholz' is German and translates to 'Tank Wood' 🙂
David,
Can you tell us where you get your play along music? Are thry available for mere mortals like me out here in reality land.?
For the algorithm. ✊
sam i need to make knife scales with that stuff, blair county represent
Where'd you get the material from? I can't find this stuff anywhere.
You should try out a ocdp kit
HHG is so dope! hey David what was that subscription service that sends you random cool stuff each month depending on what you're into? Can't remember the name
