I've practiced to records, learning the drum parts and people have noted that I have a 'nice feel' when I play. Based on the video I'd say the character is auditioning for a jazz ensemble, where it's absolutely required that you are able to sight read drum charts. Jazz drum charts are usually super easy to read, you barely need to know the basics of reading. They just give a count structure and provide a simple base groove for each phrase so you can feel out a piece without having to talk through each phrase individually before hand.
I too am close to 63. Played drums since 16. I learned to play piano only a couple years back and all it did was improved my music credibility and resume. I was tired to the "chord guy/girls" speaking a language that I was a foreign to. Now if I am playing drums or piano in the band, I can articulate notes, bars/measures, and general music theory that I lacked as a mere "nice feel " drummer. This not intended as dig on you, but be open minded. Not all readers are mechanical...ask Steve Gadd.
That's such a typical answer from someone who doesn't read music. I envy those who can play by ear but for me sight reading or reading notes or whatever you want to call it, has always been a useful tool to learn music, whether it be brass, guitar/bass, piano or drums. I feel lucky to have learned that at a young age. But never have I heard that I play music mechanically. To me that sounds just spiteful

Til this day, my single neuron monke brain still can't read sheet music.
I’ve been a musician (trombone) for nearly 60 years and despite hearing all the reasons why someone thinks they don’t need to read charts I have just one word for them: illiterate. I am now the Director of Music for an ensemble and the drummer, who heaps of experience and a wonderful feel for a whole range of music is now learning to read for the first time. I’ve convinced him of the importance of reflecting precisely what the composer or arranger was thinking at the time and showing respect fit that person’s work. As a side note he’s now getting work playing in a house band backing visiting singers which he would not have gotten if he couldn’t read.
“A prima vista” is what they call sight reading in the Netherlands. I once had to do a music exam (to make sure it was still going to be subsidized moving forward) and I passed my exam but they didn’t tell me. Instead they provided me with “The Black Page” (Terry Bozzio) just to see me sweat for a couple of minutes, after which they told me I passed :)
I'm a self taught drummer and I learnt how to read sheet music with no problems at all! Remember that tutorials and UA-cam are very useful I you know how to use them ;) and they exist since quite a few years man
In my day all my auditions were an invite to learn some of a bands songs and show them how I would play each song. They got to hear my style, work with me on fine tuning, and get to know me personally. All that in one audition. I was accepted every time. The bands lasted for years. Good times!
This video is almost word for word EXACTLY what happened at my audition for my jazz composition major audition this past saturday. though, i didn’t lie about my sight reading skill.
It was entertaining but Can't believe over 1.9 Million viewed this video. And I'm 1 of them? I'm 70 YO, retired, and just returned to "playing" Drums after a 50 Hiatus. I play for enjoyment in retirement , to MY Music : CCR, Petty, Stones, Mellencamp, Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, etc... in my basement. When I started to get into it in 1966, took maybe 6-8 lessons, practiced on a pad, and then, Finally got on a Set (in my day it was called a Drum Set) with the Instructor which was at a local Music / Record Store in Flushing Queens NY. Once that occurred .... I was Hooked on the DRUMS. I was given sheet music to read for the drums, used it for practice , but Predominantly played by EAR like many or all of us. I played in a Garage Band with HS buddies who were all learning their instruments as went. Then life took charge, off to College, etc... And I never played again until (I always played Air Drums .... it's in the Blood), my wife of 47 years heard me say That I would like tom go to a local Music Studio just to Beat on the Drums . So she played Santa Clause in 2018 , got me a Cheapo Gammon Kit and I started to play again a few months later. It took me a few months to get going. Now during 2020 -2021 I've upgraded the Kit toa PDP Maple Concept 7 piece kit (Used), new cymbals, purchased 3 new Snares , replaced all the heads, added a cowbell, all for Fun. So Baker, Moon, Bonham, Peartand most recently Watts (may they RIP), are safe !!! Well Who Knows, Maybe someone locally will start a Geriatric Band and have an audition .... I'll bring the Cymbals.
There is so much truth to that "I've got sheet music in my car" I always felt bad a jams and sessions with guys who could shred on the guitar, or crush it on the drums or keys - and I'd jump on the set, and had a hard time playing with them all. Then I heard someone say that a lot of those kinds of musicians can't really read sheet music. Me with a symphonic background as a percussionist, I can read sheet music - and as a percussionist, I can read drum clef, as well as, treble, bass, and percussion clefs.
I grew up on a full kit, mostly self taught. In middle school jazz band i played percussion and literally had to decipher the sheet music and memorize the parts because I couldn’t read fast enough. After memorizing, I just ignored the music stands and yoloed it and actually did well. Now it’s been a few years and I forgot everything about music theory and sheet music.
All good bandleaders know the drummer is also the muscle in the group (singer's the looks, guitarist's the brains, bassist is the wildcard), so someone who can lay down a funky jazz beat and also throw a right hook is crucial to musical success. You would've gotten the job in my band!
The ability to read sheet music was one of the main reasons I 1st a first wanted to learn to play the piano. To. To be able to hear music for the 1st time for the 1st time by making it yourself was a dream that I was fortunate enough too just enough to make come true... I'm a pretty good site reader. It takes not being upset about your mistakes and just powering through.. If you can learn to cite read piano music you are golden you can read anything after that... Except for those weird cleffs that strings people use....lol
Of course I have to admit that being really good at site reading Organ music makes you even more masterful than probably even the best site reading pianist...
Drummers read sheet music? Ain’t gonna lie, I’ve been playin for a while and I still in the beginning stages of reading sheet music for drums, I literally gotta go back to the basics and start over, And starting over is hard so that’s why I’m still at the beginning lol
Hiya, where in N.C? And so the moral to your comment is,... learn to read your music notes from the get go? 👍😉 Good advice, 'coz I want to learn how to play the drums. You have any other advice ? 🤗 Take care and I hope your dreams come true!
As a visually impaired musician it’s genuinely hard for me to sight read. I have to either learn the piece or just hope I get a drum part. I play mostly percussion, violin and piano. Anything melodic I can’t sight read. But learning is good on me. Sight reading rhythm, depends on the difficulty. If there’s like stupid stickings then I’ll most likely miss it lol
I remember in my high school music class, I had a classmate who was amazing at playing the drums, but he couldn't read music notes. Dude failed theory components so bad, he had to rely on learning by hearing. It's too bad we couldn't exchange some of our skills, because my strength was in theory but I was only a decent guitar player
I was thinking the video was over, sipping my beverage here, ok no worries. "Forgot my hi-hats..." "Oh! Hey! There you are! Where'd you go?" *PUNCH* And so I proceed to spit everything onto my keyboard while laughing. Guess my keyboard is going into the dryer now.
Such a great video! You always have such great elements of humor, skill, and useful advice, all combined! Some of the coolest brothers I've ever seen! Happy drumming/playing, my friends!
Absolutely, sight reading is essential and should be part of every percussionist’s training. There is no doubt that learning to sight read greatly enhances your chances of success BUT the ability to sight read or not doesn’t mean a drummer can’t be talented or successful! There are many examples such as Buddy Rich and we can see how successful he was! Bottom line: follow your dream no matter what obstacles are in front of you!
Hal Blaine read music and we all know he played on thousands of records for all these different bands... He justs walked in, read the sheet music, and then played, and they worked out all the different instruments including him... A good place to watch and hear this is the videos of him playing for the Beach Boys.....

I’ve convinced him of the importance of reflecting precisely what the composer or arranger was thinking at the time and showing respect fit that person’s work. As a side note he’s now getting work playing in a house band backing visiting singers which he would not have gotten if he couldn’t read.
Its not going to make him a better drummer though and for most musicians that whats important.
and your paying him how much,,and how entertaining is he,,you cant be all of it my friend
As a former self-taught drummer, I can say I really enjoyed this
Thanks Zack, some great tips there, when I'm in doubt, I too punch my way out of the situation, we are drummers after all.......................
The punch at the end was the best part :)
I'm a self taught drummer and I learnt how to read sheet music with no problems at all! Remember that tutorials and UA-cam are very useful I you know how to use them ;) and they exist since quite a few years man
As a drummer my professor said it's good to read but also it's good to be able to be creative when playing.
showing up with a tiny head to the gig has gotten me in so much trouble
In my day all my auditions were an invite to learn some of a bands songs and show them how I would play each song. They got to hear my style, work with me on fine tuning, and get to know me personally. All that in one audition. I was accepted every time. The bands lasted for years. Good times!
This is the best UA-cam channel,
I love you approach and how spontaneous you are
The ending actually made me lol, PR[CH]OPS
“Did you bring your own cymbals?”
“You said in the email that you were providing drums!”
“Yes. Only drums.”
This video is almost word for word EXACTLY what happened at my audition for my jazz composition major audition this past saturday. though, i didn’t lie about my sight reading skill.
But you did punch him?
I'll bring the Cymbals.
that's a 50 YEAR Hiatus !!
good for you
There is so much truth to that "I've got sheet music in my car"
I always felt bad a jams and sessions with guys who could shred on the guitar, or crush it on the drums or keys - and I'd jump on the set, and had a hard time playing with them all.
You would've gotten the job in my band!
yea i busted a few heads throwing sticks at assholes that fuck with the band,,bass players are the real muscle
Lol this was great!! Well done! I literally laughed out loud especially when he punched him at the end!
Having a very crappy pre-birthday. Randomly clicked on this video. Your smile made me smile. THANK YOU!
This is one of the best videos on this platform, period. 😂 thank you for making! 🤘🏽
"Yeah he's impressed"
Drummer: Waet, I’m supposed to sightread??
Orchestra players: First time, huh?
Whenever I go to audition they always just reply
"Sir, this is wendy's. "
This is why you ask your drum teacher to help you with audition prep!😆😆😆🥁🥁
The ability to read sheet music was one of the main reasons I 1st a first wanted to learn to play the piano. To. To be able to hear music for the 1st time for the 1st time by making it yourself was a dream that I was fortunate enough too just enough to make come true... I'm a pretty good site reader. It takes not being upset about your mistakes and just powering through.. If you can learn to cite read piano music you are golden you can read anything after that... Except for those weird cleffs that strings people use....lol
Of course I have to admit that being really good at site reading Organ music makes you even more masterful than probably even the best site reading pianist...
sight reader...
The millisecond he taps drums:
Uncomfortable smugface intensifies 1000%
Lucky my drum teacher taught me charts from day one
Gotta love the running part lul
And the guts to run outside with 3 golden discs in his hands lmfao
The "I forgot my hi hats" got me xD
"How many members are in your band?"
"We are 3 musicians and one drummer"
a conversation somewhere, probably
I pride myself on actually being a good sight reader
Drummers read sheet music?
Ain’t gonna lie, I’ve been playin for a while and I still in the beginning stages of reading sheet music for drums, I literally gotta go back to the basics and start over,
And starting over is hard so that’s why I’m still at the beginning lol
Hiya, where in N.C? And so the moral to your comment is,... learn to read your music notes from the get go? 👍😉 Good advice, 'coz I want to learn how to play the drums. You have any other advice ? 🤗 Take care and I hope your dreams come true!

Ok, I used to live in Wayne county. Not sure where your county is tbh 🥴😄 I was in Goldsboro...
@@acetrace4173 I was in Goldsboro a week ago, they got a lot of fighter planes all over the place over there
As a visually impaired musician it’s genuinely hard for me to sight read.
The punch at the end made this lecture a pleasure to watch.
My Dad taught me how to read drum charts, it's been awhile since I've sat down and really looked at any other than stick control books.
Key lesson here: if you get caught in a lie and have to bolt, don't forget the hi hats!
2:50 if someone knows what piece is that, I would die in peace
You are welcome :)

"Hey where'd ya go?" Right cross ... Made me LOL

THE THUMBNAIL😭😂😂
I remember in my high school music class, I had a classmate who was amazing at playing the drums, but he couldn't read music notes. Dude failed theory components so bad, he had to rely on learning by hearing. It's too bad we couldn't exchange some of our skills, because my strength was in theory but I was only a decent guitar player
As a self-taught drummer I have nightmares of sight-reading
I was thinking the video was over, sipping my beverage here, ok no worries.
"Forgot my hi-hats..."
"Oh! Hey! There you are! Where'd you go?" *PUNCH*
And so I proceed to spit everything onto my keyboard while laughing. Guess my keyboard is going into the dryer now.
The warming-up / chops part was friggin hysterical. Especially the floor tom, high-hat triplets. I was dyin'.
Am I going to be auditioning soon? No, I play sax. Am I going to watch? Yeah duh
Such a great video! You always have such great elements of humor, skill, and useful advice, all combined! Some of the coolest brothers I've ever seen! Happy drumming/playing, my friends!
If you're a drummer you understand the *drummers actually read music* 🤣
2:40 the "INCREDIBLE" made me laugh so hard 🤣
My guitar teacher told me a joke once:
"What do you call a guy who hangs out with a bunch of musicians?"
"A Drummer"
That joke is older than me and I'm close to 70!
