For the first time in 20 years, the musk oxen of Korkeasaari Zoo have a calf

- The calf was a pleasant surprise from the ten-year-old female, as the pregnancy was not visible from the outside due to the thick winter coat. Musk oxes have a gestation period of about nine months. The female arrived to Korkeasaari Zoo only six months ago, meaning that the calf's father is a male from the Cologne Zoo.
Zoos are working to preserve the genetic heritage of the musk ox to secure the future of the species. A herd of musk oxen has been assembled in Korkeasaari Zoo around a genetically valuable male. Last October he was joined by a 10-year-old female from the Cologne Zoo and in March the herd was completed by a 2-year-old female born at the Berlin Zoo. The aim is to have a breeding herd at Korkeasaari Zoo and to maintain valuable genetic diversity in the zoo population in the form of offspring.
