  • OTB Thinker. Have you ever mounted a power strip to the wall or in a cabinet? Using those key hole slots is a pain. Let me show you the easier way to mount a power strip in under 2 minutes.
If you want to mount a strip without drilling ANY holes, check out my other power strip video:

The most STUPID way to mount a power strip, spend a load of money on a surge protected power strip, then destroy the warranty.
The way I mount the various power strips is to use masking tape on the back of the strip, use a small pin to make a hole in the centre of the keyhole style cut out, then remove the tape and stick the tape on the surface of where I want to mount the strip, and drill the holes
    it's that easy.
For the problem of the loose fit as @MJCPeters stated what I do is use small rubber feet, there is always loads lying around from various electronic projects I build, that way the small feet take up any loose play and also helps with any vibration.
The one thing I find strange is the way the keyholes are on the power strip in the video, maybe an American thing? In the UK I have never seen the keyholes like that, they are always vertical and never move around easy once fitted.
I always buy the best quality surge protected power strips, protects PC's keyboards and synths, would sooner lose a £30 power strip than a £5k synth

Your observations are appreciated, even with the rude delivery. If you want to mount without drilling hole, then watch my other video on how to mount without drilling any holes (link below). You did forget to mention how crappy the holding power is when you use the slotted holes :>).

@@russveinot5754 Sorry if what I said came over as rude, the price for a good quality surge protected power strip in the UK is a lot more expensive compared to the USA. Never had a problem with holding power with the slotted holes, I have one power strip 6 way populated with 5 remote HBN Remote Control Plug Socket, 13A/3120W and never had an issue saying that the plastic on the power strip is heavy duty it is about 5 mm thick where the keyhole slots are, maybe the reason I have never had a problem with holding power is the style of UK power strips, as I said the slots are vertical and the design of UK plugs are done, so the cable comes down from the bottom of the plug rather than straight out, like USA style plugs.
One of the power strips I have, the neon went intermittent so replaced it and ALL the stand-offs in the plastic, were Brass coloured metal so would be totally destroyed if I had to drill them out, and every screw was a security screw, the screws are a pain in the arse to get out.
The stick on rubber feet I use are round dome shape and have a bit of give to them, so give a nice snug fit.
Hope you find some of this useful, Russ.

@@andy70d35 Don't worry about it. I have come across as rude many times :>). I had heard your concerns from others and so I made a second method that doesn't require any screws or hole drilling. I would not use this first method on an expensive one, but on a cheapie . . . why not :>). As I have always said, all comments are welcome and appreciated. Even when I do get the screws in the right place, I can never get the strip secure enough for my liking. If I sink the screws far enough they won't slide into the key way. If I back them off a hair I end up with a loose fit. Your method will allow a good snug fit to the wall. Thank you.

Russ I am so glad to see someone else make these strips work without chasing them all over the shop. What I did was use like a 1X2 that is like an inch longer than the strip on each end and hot glued the strip to the wood and then drilled holes in the board at each end and mounted it to my wall or stud or whatever. I like your idea much better......

That's good. I admit there were times I just drilled through at other spots. I could see that the wiring inside was no where near the hole, in some cases the wiring is kept separated with plastic walls inside. But your method is much more sure. (I do have a few I tried with the screw gun and cracked them, especially old ones where the plastic had become brittle.)
Another method is using flat metal mending plates (1/2" x 2" or so). Attach one at each end on the bottom- use short screws or glue- let one end stick out where you can then use a hole for mounting.

Great idea! I have thought of it before, but was afraid to cause a short. Drilling in the corners as you have, should eliminate that danger. To be extra safe, put a heat shrink tubing over the part of the screw that's inside the case, then its insulated, problem solved. Most of the newer ones, aren't put together with screws, but the corners probable still have male and female "snap" plugs. Way to go Russ!

This will work if you do not make it too wide. BUT as MJC Prters says to slide on--it never will be tight. I have resorted to twisting wire around it to secure it or blocking movement by putting a screw so that it cannot slide sideways. A poor solution.

screw one screw into the wall, enough to make it stable, mount power strip onto that one screw. Take the other screw and put it into the other hole of the power strip. Hold in place with fingers, pliers or else screwed into thin piece of wood to keep it secure and then mark wall with screw. Both screws will then be in the exact position they need to be, just keep tightening them through trial and error until you get a tight fit. Another way is to get two thin pieces of wood and put a screw through each piece of wood. Mount both pieces onto the power strip so that they slot tightly into place. Press those screws against the wall to mark it and you have the exact location of where the screws need to be.

Get some 'dowel points' normally used for marking dowel positions, drop a couple into the large part of the keyhole, press against surface you want to mount it and press, you'll be left with a couple of marks, remember that the strip needs room to move into the keyhole.

The power strips I have don’t have the same screws as yours do at the end of the strip. A very easy way to locate the holes and transfer to the wall is to take a strip of tape and tape it over the back of the strip. Then poke holes through the tape where the holes in the strip are for locating the mounting screws. Then remove the tape and place the tape on the wall where you want to mount the strip. Final step is drill the holes where the holes in the tape are and you have duplicated the holes in the back of the strip to the wall via the tape. 😀

I think the big issue is that you don’t want any metallic items on the surface that could come in contact with a live plug tang.
The US style plug is by far the most dangerous on a large scale. Australia runs 240 volts where we use 120 volts. The plugs in Australia are better but not the best. The best plugs so far are in Europe. In Europe you can’t touch the plug tangs when they get to the power connection. The US plugs it’s very easy to get your fingers in contact with the plug tangs when they are energized.

My worldly travels is the one time I accidently crossed over into Mexico and got lost for a 1/2 hr. Then found my way home (40+ years ago)

Most all electrical connections in surge protectors are recessed at least an 1/8th of an inch so there shouldn't be any danger if you touch the screw head and tang at the same time as there shouldn't be any electricity running thru it . Also if need be the head of the screw could be covered with electrical tape. As Russ said tho, if you aren't comfortable with it don't do it. Great tip IMO.
