Just beat the game yesterday at around 90 hours played. What an experience, easily the most fun game I've played in a while. My only gripe really is that there isn't any proper post-game content. There's just 1 super boss (unless you buy the DLC) so there isn't much to do with all those awesome level 90+ demons you get by the end of the game. An additional high level dungeon for the secret ending route would've been nice for example
I highly agree. The mainline SMT and Persona games may share a lot of mechanics when it comes to combat and fusions, but while Persona 3 and SMT3 look and play incredibly similarly, in Persona 3 my focus was always on trying to balance my relationships while occasionally heading into Tarterus to grind whenever I didn't have anything better to do, while in SMT3 there are only a handful of relationships to consider, and opportunities to effect them leading to your desired ending are baked into the natural game progression instead of being optional content to pick and choose from during each in-game day(aside from the True Demon Ending, which is entirely dependent on doing the optional content before reaching a specific location). Persona isn't better than SMT, and neither is the reverse true. They're both great franchises that provide deep and fulfilling experiences.
The reduced dialogue is what made me love smt 3. I like the way it goes straight to the point instead of taking 2h to explain something you already understand or to get to a conclusion you can predict from the start. It also makes sense that in a story with that kind of scale you wouldn't spend an hour discussing about a character's feelings or something like that

I been trying to play this game and Pokémon and it’s been hard for me to focus and finish either… unfortunately. But yeah this game for sure is tough but for me it’s so simple.
I am far from an expert in the SMT franchise, playing just a little of Nocturne and IV before this game came out, but I am finding V very manageable in Casual mode. You just need to embrace and understand weaknesses and buffs/debuffs. If you are still having problems, the DLCs can really help you by allowing you to earn Glory, Macca, or experience to help OP your character and demons. V is definitely easier than Nocturne, where I felt like I was sprinting from place to place to avoid random battles. In V, similar to IV, you can see the enemies, so you can often avoid fights. You can choose your battles (for the most part) if you want to target specific demons you want to recruit, or grind for levels, Macca, etc. V has also added exploration to the mix, and it has become one of my favorite features of the game. I have been searching every nook and cranny of the game world. This is easily my favorite game of this year.
Comparing two games, one that is a spinoff from the other, is legit. Comparing two games is looking at them and seeing which features they share, which features they don't, how the shared features compare, and how they do the ones they don't. A comparison is useful because if you like one and don't know if you will like the other, knowing which parts you enjoy more will help you determine if you will like the other.
Yeah, I think it is legit like that. I think he was adressing mostly IGN with the "persona without the heart" and that's because the comparison is the review. "SMT doesn't have much dialogue or focus on character so SMT is worse than persona" without aknowledging that both are different things. It's like saying "Mario golf is bad because it doesn't have as much exploration as mario odyssey". Saying "I like persona or I like smt more because of the themes/school-sim/whatever" or "I like adventure games more than golf games" is fine, but saying one is better because of that is totally missing the point of both games.
Literally my only complaint with this game so far (4 hours in, hard mode) as a seasoned smt player is that dampeners seem busted. Yes you get a max of 3, but I was still able to use those 3 to beat the mermaid/Ice siren in the second abscess at like level 7-8 with pixie demon and cait sith. I think I will try to limit myself to either 1 dampener of each type at a time, or stop using them
Yeah the abscesses aren't bosses. They are normal enemies with bonus hp. Early game those dampeners make the difference between winnable and the dps can't be checked in some boss fights. You won't be able to just roll up to bosses and win until later in the game and even then it is possible to arrive with a team that is just functionally bad versus the bosses abilities.
I compare to 4, and honestly enjoyed 4 much more. The battles felt quicker, liked the music more, characters and more unique locations than desert galore.
I'm about 30 hours in and have no plans of slowing down. Game is a masterpiece. Also I tried safety mode on a different save and was literally one-shotting every single enemy. There was no challenge at all. Btw I love your channel. Keep up the good work and fuck the haters.
Yeah this game is VERY different from the previous titles in a lot of ways. Ball bustingly nasty bosses if your team is not just right for countering them? That's still there though. While I wouldn't call this open world, it is a helluva lot more open world than any SMT or Persona game released to this point. It is very similar to Tales of Arise. The frame drops were minor at best, slightly annoying but who cares. My only complaint is the final area is overtuned to an obnoxious degree, you arrive around level 56 ish.... and every enemy is immediately 60-65 other than the enemies right at the zone entrance and some enemies you can find very fast are over 70. It is like the game immediately goes "hey random encounters are out, but we decided to put grinding back in RIGHT NOW". Enemy ambushes are very rare, if it happens it probably happened cause it got you from behind or it attacked and you weren't attacking. It is very rare for an enemy to just get the drop on you, though I admit even hitting the enemy first sometimes you do rarely lose initiative anyway. I agree SMT and Persona are different games, but you are out of your mind saying they are not similar in gameplay or that persona 5 is just a "life simulator". Their gameplay is actually almost identical from a combat perspective, just SMT is much harder and there are some differences such as how bonus turns function. They both have bonus turns though don't they?
@@james441 Based lol. Same exact taste for me. Metroid Dread, BotW, and SMT5 are probably the best. Although SMT5 runs a little poorly, I can’t wait for it to come to another platform. It will shine
I'm agree that randomness is really painful. What I mean is the critical is seriously too hardcore. I play hard mode. Just beat the first boss (hydra) yesterday. And even with the best team setup without weakness sometimes the boss just get critical and kills a demon. Then with the additionnal attack he kills another. And after unless the boss is almost dead it's almost impossible to comeback. Outside of that the game is a masterpiece. Everything is fun even if I rarely die so often in an RPG lol.
@@Jimbo-hw2rr I mean, that's kinda on you, in this game Mudo/Hama can only instakill target who are weak to Light/Dark, just change your affinities to something that's not weak to those elements and you won't lose on a stray Mudo/Hama ever again
Don’t be intimidated by the difficulty, I’m fairly dense about the minutiae of RPG battle mechanics and I’m totally bumbling my way through on safety. No problem. Shame on Atlas for not giving you a review code, Eric.
A JRPG beginner would need the DLC easy mode. I'm' playing on the low difficulty setting . It's not hard as in difficult, but as in complicated. Like using strengths and weaknesses still matters. Buffs and debuffs are important and there is no real hard-charging faceroll mode. But your review is 100 times 100% correct. It has the best of what SMT can offer and minimizes the pain and tedium. It's my GOTY and favorite SMT title of all, including over Persona games.

cool review man, better than other channels I've seen than just compare it to other smt games or rpgs. I think strange journey redux had the essense mechanic before, also smt 4 had the roaming monster battles but sucked because the small screen and 3ds controls were not designed for an open world, I got myself ambushed all the time in that game, atlus should port that one to modern consoles with better camera controls
That's weird that you didn't get a review code. There's a really good SMT channel called Tony4You that only has 10K subs that got a review code. I know he specializes in Shin Megami Tensei, but I figured they were really generous this time around. I probably could have told them that this game came out on my birthday(which it did) and they would have given me one. :P Either way, sorry that Atlus ignored you.
This is still a good starting point for new players. I never got into the kiddy hate between persona and smt fans. I kinda wonder in a comedic way if there are other smt spin off fans that go against both smt and persona. I'm glad persona has become it's own thing because that series has tempted new fans over time to try the main line megaten games and personally I prefer megaten more. However it's the opposite with my brother who doesn't have as much tolerance with any hard games at all. I love hard, long and slow progression like games while my brother likes super fast, easier and snappy games more. I love King of fighters, tekken, street fighter, pokken, smash bros. My brother loves smash bros and pokken. We have our differences but we both like persona and smt its just that one of us prefers one series over the other. Also I'm a way better Joker than him lol.
Hey, personally I would suggest keeping your grievances to companies to yourself, it can hurt you for ever getting a review copy from the company and it is very likely somebody is watching the video.
I'm 30 hours in and keep wondering to myself is this really SMT? Because it doesn't feel like a lone wolf journey, but a journey with a lot of peoples.
It is based on a number of factors. The only time it is RNG is if you and the enemy attack and hit at the same time, or if you both just run into each other, then it is random. Of course if you have high luck and agility odds are the random result will go your way. If you beat the enemy on agility the only way they will be likely to go first is them attacking and hitting you without you hitting back. Even then you might get it depending on how badly you beat them in agility and your luck.
@@DKarkarov I was referring purely to him saying "if you hit them first is random". Of course them hitting you first and so and so can clearly influence
Hey man I love ur vids! For when the enemies start, can’t you just raise your luck as you level? I read that that raises your Initiative for start of combat. You might enjoy the game more and have less of a bad time with that rng
About the RNG here's my advice, ALWAYS have some Smoke Bombs, they are really cheap to buy and can really easy save your ass if a random mob fight starts really bad.
The game can be punishing for being reckless so definitely not for begit in series. I died early on going all offensive on group of pretas. Battle music puts me on killing mode and I found some hidden surprises while looking for minah. Such as statues which gives huge level boost and certain mobs will draw aggro regardless of high level. Square Enix still uses random encounters in their games I know essentially for Bravely Default.
When a new mainline entry releases in other video game franchise fans usually celebrate, a new megaten game releases especially persona/smt it causes world war 3

I been trying to play this game and Pokémon and it’s been hard for me to focus and finish either… unfortunately. But yeah this game for sure is tough but for me it’s so simple.
It took me a hundred tries to finally defeat the first boss, even after a few grinding. So yeah, the game is definitely hard even in normal mode.
Title meaning: SMT V is not Persona 5
Love your energy! I JUST got my copy of the game due to the delay in Canada. :) can't wait to start this!
Digging your channel Bud! Keep up the good work.
The detailed animations are also a great plus.
Nice outro and great review, whats the band of your tshirt, i couldnt recognized
Cool video Eric. Thanks!
Hope all is well Erick. Been watching you for years
Thank you for the review Erik and great ending to the video 😄👍
My favorite part of this game is finding the Miman for the shopkeeper. My daughter loves there expressions and even drawing them in class! 🤣
Was waiting for your opinion, Erick. Thanks. I'm buying.
I think I will try to limit myself to either 1 dampener of each type at a time, or stop using them
I only used those for boss battles which highly recommend and appreciative. (30 hours in on hard mode)
Eh no. You will be needing those dampeners and probably elemental block skills to take on actual bosses past the first map area.
The ending of this video made me laugh my ass off!! Cheers!!
I compare to 4, and honestly enjoyed 4 much more. The battles felt quicker, liked the music more, characters and more unique locations than desert galore.
u and 2 other ppl somewhere.. lol
I'm about 30 hours in and have no plans of slowing down. Game is a masterpiece. Also I tried safety mode on a different save and was literally one-shotting every single enemy. There was no challenge at all. Btw I love your channel. Keep up the good work and fuck the haters.
The lag is understandable when you remember this game was announced the same year the switch came out. Nintendo needs a pro model or something 🤔
Great video, this channel rocks!
Boooooooooo!
Hope we get another raidou game at some point.
Or a remastered of the first game would be nice.
Great review!
It’s probably my 3rd favourite switch game. It’s that good.
what are your 2 favs I'm curious
@@stevecosmolove1045 persona 5 strikers probably
@@stevecosmolove1045 botw & Metroid dread
@@james441 Based lol. Same exact taste for me. Metroid Dread, BotW, and SMT5 are probably the best. Although SMT5 runs a little poorly, I can’t wait for it to come to another platform. It will shine
@@Zephhi real recognise real lol
Lol! Airing out Atlus. Very SMT of you, Erick! 🤘🏾
i would want a dlc of characters: dante(dmc), raidou kuzunoha, demi-fiend, makoto yuki(p3p), narukami yu(p4g), ren amamiya(p5r)
Jin(dklv)
One word for that ending dude, Metal
I'm agree that randomness is really painful. What I mean is the critical is seriously too hardcore. I play hard mode. Just beat the first boss (hydra) yesterday. And even with the best team setup without weakness sometimes the boss just get critical and kills a demon. Then with the additionnal attack he kills another. And after unless the boss is almost dead it's almost impossible to comeback.
Outside of that the game is a masterpiece. Everything is fun even if I rarely die so often in an RPG lol.
I love dying to random enemy's Mudo spells in Daat and have not saved for like 50 minutes to an hour :(
@@Jimbo-hw2rr I mean, that's kinda on you, in this game Mudo/Hama can only instakill target who are weak to Light/Dark, just change your affinities to something that's not weak to those elements and you won't lose on a stray Mudo/Hama ever again
A JRPG beginner should just play SMT III on hard to learn how to get good.
Man... this is one of the few exclusives that would have me tempted to buy a switch... Maybe that is a video idea for Erick? Top exclusive games to convince you to buy [INSERT PLATFORM HERE].
Man I'm so behind on my Switch RPGs. Been playing a lot of Tony Hawk lately though 😆
Hi mate! i hope you've heard about the new Chrono Cross remake!
great man, now i want to play the game, thanks
Can Erick or anyone tell me what game the 2nd scene from his intro is from? The one with the two women joining together and spinning in a circle with swords! It shows a Circle prompt and there’s a chain counter in the bottom right!
It's Nights of Azure 2.
@@jucksalbe thank you so much!
Why this game is not on ps4&5 ?
Because Atlus doesn't love us.
Really a great game I’m really enjoying it !
Oh and I love your last message at the end of the video 😅🤣 !
I used to only play Pokémon casually but recently I've been getting into more JRPGs (Xenoblade and Persona). Do you think I would be able to handle this game. Keep up the amazing content I found your channel about a month ago and I've been watching every upload since!
cool review man, better than other channels I've seen than just compare it to other smt games or rpgs.
Either way, sorry that Atlus ignored you.
But there are only like 3 other people. You're on your own for almost the entirety of the game
But you’re alone most of the time though.
Will definitely buy it :) This videos ending was unexpected and amazing 😂
First turn in battle isn't RNG. Is based on the Nahobino Agility Stat though.
I’ve never played a SMT game but to me this game looks like DQ11 mixed with doom
As weird as it sounds it's pretty accurate lol
Never thought about it this way
Yikes
Atlus be nice to Erik he loves these games:)
Hey man I love ur vids! For when the enemies start, can’t you just raise your luck as you level? I read that that raises your Initiative for start of combat. You might enjoy the game more and have less of a bad time with that rng
Oh boy I've been waiting for this 🍿
@Erick Landon RPG what is your thoughts with the leak for Chrono Cross remake?
Men I love your videos :D
About the RNG here's my advice, ALWAYS have some Smoke Bombs, they are really cheap to buy and can really easy save your ass if a random mob fight starts really bad.
Still got three more days before I get my copy 😑 The soundtrack is 🔥 so lit😳
The game can be punishing for being reckless so definitely not for begit in series. I died early on going all offensive on group of pretas. Battle music puts me on killing mode and I found some hidden surprises while looking for minah. Such as statues which gives huge level boost and certain mobs will draw aggro regardless of high level. Square Enix still uses random encounters in their games I know essentially for Bravely Default.
When a new mainline entry releases in other video game franchise fans usually celebrate, a new megaten game releases especially persona/smt it causes world war 3
Spill the tea!
Game isn't full of needless dialogue....Falcom and the makers of Trails of Cold Steel could learn from this.
A lot of games could learn from this.
The story was ass though.
thx for one more nice video
