For some reason watching in 2019. This is hard to watch. What a brave man, I wish I could be standing there right alongside him. And any time I felt scared or threatened I would think of those scared boys being assaulted by Sandusky and so I would stand there for them, and be their voice, when nobody else would be....
The ironic part of all of this is that Sandusky's behavior was covered up because Paterno, Curley, Schulz and Spanier thought that it would destroy the football program. Their failure to report this incident subsequently DESTROYED the football program.
+Paul y - There are so many of us who are just hoping and waiting for the trials of Curley,Schulz and Spanier so that we can REALLY hear about who did what and when. The football program "survives", but I would like to hear about what happened within the Penn State administration.
Joe Paterno knew of Sandusky abuse in 1976, Penn State had 6 chances to report. "Is it accurate that Coach Paterno quickly said to you, 'I don't want to hear about any of that kind of stuff, I have a football season to worry about?'" the man's lawyer asked him in 2014. "Specifically. Yes ... I was shocked, disappointed, offended. I was insulted... I said, is that all you're going to do? You're not going to do anything else?" Paterno, the man testified, just walked away.
Being from Phila and Penn I understand people wanting to give JP a pass and the paternal influence and desire to protect him but history never judges people who ignore it or build statues to and hero worship people while theyre still alive to kindly
Blind hero worship and obsession with sports is a key reason our country wont or cant fix real issues and why things keep getting worse. We need to be honest with ourselves and start dealing with problems.
PA law is very explicit about mandate reporters being professional teachers, coaches, daycare workers, as well as volunteers in programs involving minors in that the adult in charge must contact the proper authorities upon witnessing a possible sexual abuse act against a minor or if a minor reveals to an adult in such a program that he or she has experienced abuse by an adult. The adult does not determine whether or not the incident is viable or not. That is to be determined by the proper authorities who will make a decision after their investigation. The employment adult or volunteered adult is legally bound to simply immediately contact the proper authorities. Teachers can lose their PA Teaching Certification for life for failure to make a swift and timely report. So, Joe Paterno and the administration had no right to make and "in house" decision as to how they would handle Sandusky's shower incident. Termination was the approporiate decision for a PA institution.
I'm not one to judge anyone, but the site of the statue is a very filthy place. I went to see it for myself a year or two ago. Paterno should have done more, but there is a lot of misguided anger here. Since Paterno is Penn state and he is this paternal figure, all the anger is directed at him.
Ok so I guess Joe, seeing Sandusky all over campus with different boys all the time, never thought "gee maybe I should personally look into this?". Stop giving him a pass. Watch the film Paterno starring Al Pacino it's a VERY accurate depiction of what REALLY happened. Paterno wasn't evil but he made a deal with the devil for sure.
I've read Paterno's auto-biography. While I can understand people thinking Paterno could have moved the investigation along, and should have. Paterno, however, was not a sworn officer of the law and had no authority to conduct the investigation. According to what I've read he reported the allegations, he could not control whether the Investigation was conducted.
Did he have to honor him and praise him publicly for being a foster parent? Did he have to allow him to continue bringing little boys to Penn State to be molested? Why didn't he publicly speak out? He knew since 1976 and still worked and associated with the man. It goes far beyond his reporting to his "superiors" which is laughable because it seems like Paterno ran Penn State! He honored and praised Sandusky!
Paterno did not contact the proper PA civil authorities and that is what he was legally obliged to do as a PA Mandated Reporter once he was given the information of what the assistant coach saw. He was NOT suppose to investigate anything. That is the work of Child Protection Services and the Polices. PA LAW is very specific that if you are a professional adult working with minors (under 21 years if age) in PA, and are informed of an abuse by your staff or you are told by the minor directly of an alleged abuse, that you must contact the PA Child Protection Agency and the Police and let them do the investigation. It is crime. If a teacher you lose your PA Professional Teaching Certification for life. You may also be fined, jailed or given community service.
The following is a direct quote from today's news, "A court order related to the millions of dollars owed to the victims of Jerry Sandusky says that Penn State coaches, including Joe Paterno, may have known of child abuse allegations against Sandusky as far back as 1976." HE KNEW, what else was that monster guilty of?

@@slaktheking69 No he couldn't have, because there was nothing to cover up, as NCIS agent John Snedden confirmed. The boy in the shower, Allen Myers, said nothing happened that night. You know nothing about the case.
@@hjsimpson I know he didn’t fire the Pedo
This guy was being a jerk by blatantly getting in people's pictures however I support him standing off to the side where the cops asked him to stand. Joe is complicit in being naive to a point where he is not the man he claimed to be and while he was not a bad man he was flawed like everyone. The entire situation is unfortunate because the threads uncover complicity of people who are only guilty by association, unfortunately.
Joe wasn’t guilty by association. He was guilty of failing to take any interest in the sexual abuse of children. He dismissed it as somebody else’s problem. He didn’t care.
@@myguykaikai9215 I wasn't saying Joe was guilty by association but the secretaries of Curly and Schultz and some other coaches and players were only guilty by association. Joe Paterno turned out to be a huge fraud. He knew Sandusky quite possibly molested a child as did the other higher ups, and they swept it under the rug. It's a disgrace.
Did Paterno have Ray Gricar killed?
Good on u boss
What the do with the statue after remove?
In storage...
Paterno is the epitome of someone staying around too long.
The media was out to get Joe Pa for decades. There’s 2 sides to every story.
pedo enabler
Funny how people can be brainwashed over a false idol. Now if it was some of there kids they would feel so different.
With apologies to Ludacris:
My coach bad,
My coach hood,
My coach turned a blind eye like I knew he would.
Sounds like Johnny Cash
5:54 people are posing with a bobble head of Joe Paterno? They are truly blind to his involvement.
You have no idea what his "involvement" was save reading ESPN headlines.
Put the statue back up. There was no cover up , since there was nothing to cover up. Please google John Snedden Penn state to begin your search for the truth
I just don't understand why people cannot move on and forward and instead keep looking at the past. The Sandusky Scandal is behind me, and I'm moving on. When our team is successful, people are gonna hate the WHOLE school because of one person's actions? Very un-Godlike don't ya think?
No worry to the new regime at PSU...you will not win ONE National Championship in your lifetime....you deserve it.
I would of been right next to this guy.
It's like the grassy knoll....
Joe knew
Joe should have gone to the police in the first place.
What would he tell them that wasn't hearsay?
The protester is a disgrace joe didn’t do anything wrong he’s a good guy
Yeah ok buddy keep your head in the sand
wow
free paterno bruh
RIP joepop
+david pavlovich its Joe Pa
This guys awsome!!!
if you ask me i think that Joe Paterno should be the one put behind Bars,
+george kenney - your the media's sheep !
no matter what you say i still say that he should also have been put behind Bars along with his friend,
+george kenney - and that's fine if that's your opinion but you cant put people behind bars because of opinions as I am sure you know that is craziness, but for the factual record he did not not go behind bars because he did not commit a crime, no matter what you say or think you cant change that its a fact
because he thinks more of his friend Jerry then those other young boys
+george kenney - that doesn't make any sense in reference to what were talking about, but your reply is very typical, predictable, and boring, there are rational people that take the media's word on anything but will take a 2nd look at the actual facts if a worthy fact is tossed up to them, and then there are haters which is the category that you fall into, when one throws up a valid point instead of saying hmmm im going to look into this a little more they simply reply this : "because he thinks more of his friend Jerry then those other young boys" - "George Kenney"
This guy is an enormous joke, calling people all sorts of derogatory names and assaulting them. Dishing it out but too scared to take it. Joke, like a bad skit from the office.
The real reason you are upset is because you know he is right. Your hero was a pedo protector.
@@EvolutionIX219 I’m not the one standing outside a public space, assaulting both men and women during family photos, and cowardly insulting them when after walk away. I’m not a Penn State fan and I certainly don’t look at Paterno as a hero, but this guy is, ironically, a sniveling monument to knee-jerk, emotional virtue-signaling and social degradation due to ignorance despite a breadth of information to the contrary.
Joe paterno is number one.
Let Joe rest in peace ffs..... All the great things he did shouldn't be ignored
Joe paterno was innocent

The professor should have known better. As Franco Harris said the media and others condemned him without due process. Later the Freeh report was found to be faulty and biased and Coach was found to be not guilty of any wrong doing and reported it as required by law. Many owe him and his family an apology.
PS = Pedo sympathizers

I’m glad they removed that statue. 😊
As a penn state fan, i can tell you that almost none of us still idolize the 'Pedo', but what this guy did was arrogant and unneeded.
